2 Player Symbiots

Saw the article back when it came out, and something caught my attention.  Symbiots!  I posted this to my personal forum back in Jan 2006 when I was bored and thinking a bit outside the box in relation to MMOGs.  Just thought I'd toss it out here to drum up some fan thoughts and ideas on the subject.

Ready to really take a step into left field with me? Read on..

2 Player Symbiots

Every character has the option to have a symbiotic being put in
themselves. This is a 2 step procedure that requires the character
wanting to take in the symbiote on to first go to NPC or facality and
fill out a form. The form is mostly in game content, but has a slot to
name the symbiot's name. Since all names are basically unique, there is
no overlap.

The symbiote player does the same thing, fills out a similar form, with
the host character's name on it. Once both forms are accepted, and the
host takes the symbiote on, the two players are a single entity game
wise. Both can be played normally as their characters up to this point.
Once joined however the host loses some of their class abilities, but
gains new things they can do from the symbiotic relationship that end
up being equal to their old class but with a different focus.

Now the host can play normally by themselves with their new
abilities, but their true new power shines when the player playing the
symbiote logs in. The symbiote logs into their character and is
basically along for the ride. The host controls the main abilities,
movement, etc. The host and the symbiote have a private group chat just
for themselves.

The symbiote skills and abilities are now refocused to true support
abilities, buffs, damage adders, healing, etc. When the symbiote is
riding the host it can use these abilities on its host, and only its
host. It may even have a few different attacks that would take both the
host and the symbiote to do in conjuction. Together they are much
stronger then they would be solo or even playing duo in this
relationship, but the downside is they split the xp/skill points
between themselve's equally; yet only receive xp/skill points as one
character.

The symbiote can chat normally in all other chats, but some form of
flag by their name would show up in the chat windows to represent the
fact they are a true symbiote.

The concept is similar to a tank driver and a tank gunner working
together as a team inside the tank. Using just their own abilities and
weapons they are good, working together as a team duo they are great,
working solo in the tank they are OK, but put them together inside a
tank and they become something truly awesome. Instead of the gunner
focusing on damage though, in the case of the symbiote, they are
focusing on support role stuff. Though they could just as easily be
attack based.

This could even be simplified to just a ability, skill, or spell
that allows for the host and the symbiote to form up together for a
period of time. Which I think would work better in the long run and
would avoid conflict if the two player had a falling out for whatever
reason.

This idea popped into my head when thinking on other ways to do healing classes or support roles.

    What?

    Always do the right thing

    Joe
also mentioned the possibility of including the symbiotes as a playable
race. This would give players the opportunity to shift hosts and to
make the decision of whether to be Tok'Ra or Goa'Uld in their
behaviors. Giving the players what he called "betrayal ideas".

    Clarification for the  troll..

Now that's a new and interesting idea you have there Datawight. If you don't or haven't, I might look to bring that idea up on the main SG-W forums.

I couldn't see how it would work in a real game sense, discussions on it would be interesting.

main issue with this great idea is the fact that it would be very hard to keep it balanced with the other classes

Only getting 1/2 xp sounds balanced enough for me :s

i know this sounds crazy but wouldnt it also depend on the symbiote because surely a to'kra would have a 2 sided relationship but the go'ould would keep the host supressed, surely the way to do it is ot have symbiotes take over the hosts body is certain quests and its up to the hosts team to capture or elimate their team mate, also being a tok'ra surely that would jsut be a race liek being a go'ould?

good idea, a little to difficult to do.  what happens when one cant log on, but the symbiot wants to play?
