Monthly Fee? Yes or No

PokemonTrainerRedPokemonTrainerRed Member UncommonPosts: 375

Do you think that gamers should pay a monthly charge for Stargate Worlds, or should it be in chapters like Guild Wars, where you buy the game then new content is released every 6 months or so, or perhaps Free to Play, never having to pay ever, or maybe you could buy "Premium" items in game that costs real money?

Games that charge a monthly fee are always well maintained and usually have new updates and expansions added on regularly, but ends up costing a lot money over a 12 month period.
(£14.99 per month x 12 Months = £179.88)

Pay Per Chapter is good for people who don't want to pay a monthly fee because of their limited use of the game but does mean expansions will cost roughly £20 each time.

Free to Play is good for people who do not have a lot of money and cannot afford a monthly fee, also it gets rid of the need to use your credit card. The downside is you get a lot of "DANNY IS A MUG!" repeated in your chat menu several thousand times and a lot of people who generally ruin the games atmosphere.

What does everyone else thing?

the problem there is monthly fee is the only way to go ...

Chapters is ok but... in the end guild wars gets boring quick.. there isnt a good quest system and farming isnt fun unless you have 2 types of characters only good farming is in the underworld... that game in the high end is made strictly for pvp  and only arena pvp  and also to easily maintain the ONE server there is barely any player interaction between each other...

Premium items is the biggest joke ever.. why acctually have to work at anything in a game when you can just easily buy something that makes you timmy the power gamer... people who do pay by cash for items are people who play games for about 2-3 months then leave cause they have A.D.D. if you dont want to work to build up your character why even play an mmoRPG at all?

MOnthly fee encourages the game company to constantly think of ways to keep the customers interested...

MOnthly Keeps players in the game cause they dont want to see there money go to waste paying a subscription...

i could go on and on about this but i have to go to work now !!! :)

Paying games are usually best quality in: Content (starwars galaxies does not count that was just a big mistake of a game) maintenance, stability, and player interaction quality.
Guild Wars on the other hand was great system but only to focus it on PVP. Guild Wars was a huge sucess in PVP system but it was just a regular linear (diablo II grinding style) instanced dungeon type... not very fun to play.

a real MMO PVE system : i can go anywhere i please but there are risks involved (monsters traps terrains)
a real MMO PvP system : lalalalala (singing) ambush!!!!! whaaaaa!!!!!!!!! cling clink (swords) POWPOW (guns) some one is usually dead and naked on the floor

those take lots of managing and paying 14,99 per month is acceptable for that quality

Now to stargate worlds, i would hope that it is a REAL MMO because cmon...more than one person can visit a planet at a time. it would be ridiculous that there would only be 5-10 gouaoulds (sry for awefull spelling) in one big planet

it would be fun that a ghouaould controled planet would have actual players guarding a gate or create ambush for the humans. it would be more realistic...
isnt that the point of an MMO : be as realistic as possible in the given universe?

so my vote is yes i would pay 14,99 per month to play.

I think SGW would do good with "pay per chapter" as Stargate has seasons, and each Chapter could be 2 or 3 seasons, with the chapter being bought before the episodes happen so there can be updates when the show is on. Hope that made sence

Pay to play. At least keep a few of the "l33tZor" losers out

?? That would mean we only get new content every 3 years. Many problems with that sort of business model.. mainly that they would have to fund the servers for 3 years based on the initial purchases - which is impossible.

Pay2play is the only way to go. Its the only way to pay 2 sets of developers - one to fix bugs and one to develop new content on a monthly basis. As well as paying the $50,000 a month server costs.

There are 2 games on this web site that are not pay2play. One of them is guild wars which has 3 days worth of content :s Another is dark and light and thats is a disaster. Aparrently roma victor will be p2p *but* rich people can buy endless in-game currency and the average user will need $15 of currency/month anyway.

    very good points there,

how about the first part(5 seasons)of the game is released as a one time payment to keep the non hardcore gamers playing,

and an expansion(next 5 seasons) with a monthly fee that continually expands.

I would prefer monthly fee out of these options.

Its more flexible than the others.  I have never liked the idea of buying premium items in exchange for the fee, its unfair for those who don't have as much money as others.

As for the Guild Wars set up.  Well that isn't exactly much cheaper, if not even more expensive depending on how reguarly new expansions are brought out.  I have never liked this model either as it isn't really very flexible, and people think they are getting a free game when they arn't.  It can turn out being more expensive than the average monthly fee.  On the plus side it does encourage the devs to make sure they bring out good expansions, but there are other ways of motivating devs of course.

It depends on your basis for comparison. The new expansions retail at $50 and the first one came out over 12 months after the original game....
EQ2 releases expansions every 6 months and charges $60 for them on top of the $15/mo fees :(

i doubt guildwars will be more expensive than paying monthly fee
    monthly fee game : 14.99 x 12 = 179,98$USD + retail  39,99$USD
    thats 219.87$USD

Guild wars (expansions every 6 months so 1 game + expansion for 12 months)
Guild Wars Prophecies 39,99$USD  + GuildWars factions 49,99$USD thast 89,98$USD

P.S. all prices are taken from www.ebgames.com

I like the idea of a monthly fee but I think they charge too much monthly. I mean $15.00 a month is a fair amount. Especially since I live in Canada so it's $20/mo for me. I would be happy even if they charged $5-8 less per month. While I am a fan of monthly fee's I think they could be a little more reasonable.
As well, I'm not a big fan of GW's expansions, buy them if you want to, because everybody should be able to have the same experience.
"Jim: OMG Tom I just found this sweet boss in yura island that gives you a million gold!"
"Tom: Sorry I don't have the new expansion so I can't come..."

    That kind of thing.

What I would prefer would be $9.99USD monthly fee. The game maker shouldn't have to charge $15.99 a month to the player. If their game is good and they spend time making a game people want they can get a lot of players. $120.00/yr x player amount sounds good enough to me. Just my 2 cents.

Perhaps a combonation of several methods?

Reduce the monthly fees, but bring out buyable expansions, give the option of premium items (It has to be easy though, like Habbo Hotel's pay via your mobile credit).

I dissagree with Guild Wars chapters being a bad thing. The Factions expansion was a let down admittingly, but it give give a lot of new life into the game and brought many new players. If the problem of lifespan could be fixed in the Nightfall expansion I think it would have solved most of people's problems/conplaints.

But with a total freeroaming area, there becomes the problem of overcrowding, I want to see where I am without having to search in great detail. Perhaps you could roam but there be a "Mission Map" where a limited amount of people enter at once, sorta like 20 people get sent on a mission to another world!

    Any thought on this?

  • Devil21Devil21 Member Posts: 74
Well since this is the stargate universe I think that would be an awsome idea. However, while some of the time it is nice to be alone/with a small group I also enjoy the large scale battles that feel epic. I know this is sort of getting off topic but perhaps there could be missions earlier in the game where a person can go with a small team of players to other worlds but later on in the game there could be larger battles that a player can participate in either PVP or PVE.

    Sorta like an exploration mission?

Reminds me of the setup of Space Cowboy. There would be massive (200+ ships) battles where two nations would fight over maps. But for people who just want to level and explore they could go to a second "room", available only if the nation controled the area, where the other nation couldn't enter.

And it's Free to Play as well

I'll make another thread about missions!

you mean kind of like guild wars on a lower scale? lol, ur describing gw's hall of heroes and whichever side wins controls the underworld and fissure of woe, but it's still a good idea :p

Paying monthly seems to be the best way to me and for me. I can justify paying $15 a month for entertainment that is available 24/7 of that month. I've never payed any other way though, so I guess it's just what feels normal to me.

I'm not against $15 a month it's just that everybody seems to be charging that price. I don't have a problem paying that much, but, is the game worth $15/mo? That's my problem. If the player is going to be paying $15 a month, which equates to about 4-5 non mmo's a year (about $40 per game), the game has to be worth it and offer the same amount of fun I could get from those non mmo's. That's just my opinion anyway.
  • ChaoticaChaotica Member UncommonPosts: 93
I agree with you. It definitely has to be worth that amount before I'm willing to pay it.

i don't think that there should be a monthly fee because if its free to play and all you have to do is buy the game you would probally get everyone and there brother to join this game and i'm a big mmorpg fan i'd like to see a free online game for once that is actually great on graphics and has something new every now and then and expansion if they would be free that be awesome but some games i paid monthly fees on are usual ill maintained take star wars galaxies i payed a 6 month fee plus i had to pay for expansion and they were crap when player suggessted they have improvements and no one listen because when i got there first expasion that went out into space i could never hit that target i would make at least one hit i was even dead center then asked if it could be fixed never happened and then i came back and said so i pay people to play a game i don't like now because not only do you charge people to play it you charge to add more screw ups to it a great game would be great graphic great customer services and no payment monthly and i think this will be a great game to play i just would like not to have to pay for it just incase i get bored one day and already have 100 dollars in the subscription already and i wouldn't want to waste my cash on something i decide is not my style any more i just hope you guys do the right thing cause some people have computer able to play most of these mmorpgs and never play them because they have to pay for them

I will pay the monthly fee if there is one (granted the game is fun, and doesn't suck, and has a mature community, etc) And I know a lot of people will also. They will have a large player base (again, unless the above does not happen) no matter which payment route they decide to take.

Exactly why it should be pay to play. "Everybody and their brother" includes botters, hackers, 12 year old 1337 reject punks, and all the other scum that are the bane of the mmorpg genre. Do they all exist in a pay to play game? Sure, but nowhere to the degree of free to play games. Free to play games are usually run by GMs who couldn't give a crap because they are too busy giving their friends special items and powerups and/or are running gold farms themselves. There is a reason free to play games are not up to par with pay to play games. You get what you pay for. And SWG is not a valid game to hold up as an example of pay to play games. SWG is an anomaly, not the norm of how pay to play games are run. Oh, and by the way: have you ever heard of the period?

surely the best idea would be ot have a 2moons style idea where it is paid for by advertising content, can u imagine a npc carter with a can of coke in her hand? but essentially i mean the program is paid for by advertising between breaks so why cant the game be paid for by advertising, i.e. loading screens with logos, coke cans around the place, hell if ne of it is on earth life size bill boards like u actually have!!!

    monthly fee, with expansions.

advertising is definately good too, especially in a game that entails modern day society.

ok i think all of your ideas are great, but one thing, have you forgot about poor stargate atlantis? maybe make it to where you buy stargate worlds (sg-1) then an expansion stargate worlds (atlantis)
