Looks like the creater of SGW decided to do a level based levelign system like every other mmorpg out there right now. THis was taken from a interview with Jake Simpson that http://stargate.onlinewelten.com/ did with him.
What about levels/advancements? Does the player start at Level 1 and can go up until level X? Or will there be ranks and the player can be promoted (e.g. Airman Basic > Airforce General)? Or are both possibilitys combined (e.g. You will be promoted every 3^rd level)?
It is level based – we are going to level 50. We are making a concerted effort to deal with the levelling out problem, i.e. to have game play beyond level 50 to keep people interested, plus we are also put some stuff in place to make replay of new characters as attractive an option as possible.
In terms of promotion, yes that does occur at set places where you level up. For the humans its more obvious than it is for other races, but it will be there.
I personally think that suck big time. Its going to be another World of Warcraft with a Stargate theme.

i agree it sucks, they should have implemented a swg type profession system.

I can see it already, head over to some officer, get a quest to kill 10 Jaffa and bring me back there Zatguns. Then i'll give you a reward, here you can pick from a P90, some armour, or a medi kit. Hum i'm ranged so i'll take the P90 cus it's a bit higher level than my MP5 and holds more bullets.
Oh wait "WOW" look at that M249 machine gun i'll buy that. Argh crap I haven't got heavey weapon talents till level 40.
i hate a capped level system too, it seems silly,. but oh well i think the only game which gets around it is eve online, and in the end that gets boring ne way
heaven and earth are ruthless,
and treat the myriad creatures as straw dogs
Guess I won't be playing SGW after all. I hate level based MMO's with a passion.

bottom line: If levels are involved it means stratification of the playerbase. This is a bad thing.
Of course if I get into the beta I'll dork around in it to see how the game feels, etc. But I seriously doubt I'll pay to play it. The only two level based MMO's I spent any time in were EQ1 and DAOC. Basically because UO had been ruined by EA and there wasn't a sandbox option at the time. When SWG came out (sandbox) I immediately moved to it and never looked back. Then monkeyed around when NGE went live and wound up playing EVE (even though I don't particularly LIKE EVE it's still the best SANDBOX available).
So I can say pretty clearly that if it has a level system rather than a skill based system I probably will not enjoy it.

I fail to see why sandbox and level based progression are mutually exclusive.
You could easily have a level based system in any of the sandbox games out there. What activities are available to someone and how they get their skills are separate distinctions. Levels also aren't indicative of a linear skillset, but single classes are. Just as a single profession in SWG could be restrictive, fortunately you were allowed to dabble in multiple professions. Dungeons and Dragons allows you to multi-class, so you can break free of some restrictions of a single class system, like WoW. Yes, WoW's implementation of a class system is restrictive and they also chose to have levels and a hardened environment that is very scripted.
An MMO could have levels, be in a sandbox environment, and allow user selectable skills from various trees at each level. Thus you wouldn't have a linear, level-based, MMO. Think about the old D&D PnP experience. You were in a level based, multi-class, environment, where the sky was the limit (sandbox) on what you could do. You were limited only by your imagination and the imagination of your DM. There is no reason why an MMO couldn't be based on that concept (irony considering MMO's draw their origins back to D&D ultimately).
Just my 2¢.
so...
I haven't been keeping a close eye on SGW and it looks like I missed out on an important development.
I hate that they made it level based. I was hoping for more sandbox and skill based.
They still might make it sandbox/level based, but I am not sure they will do that.
They aren't going to break the mold, and it appears they'll just follow the other MMOs lead.
Sad day for me.

well i think rpg combat is great, i hate fps in mmo's they suck. levels suck i think it should be skills based and i like the idea of cool loot that makes it more interesting imo.

cause there needs to be some reward for killing something, even if its not everytime maybe high level mobs etc...for me loot drives me to play the game, the hope for something really cool. i played coh/cov and there's only two loots in that game, enhancements/inspirations and they suck. after playing swg/EnB looting was fun, it was cool to go hunting for that reactor or engine you really wanted, or hunting for a that part for your rare weapon to build it. and please don't tell me loot shouldn't drive the game for me, i've done all the questing/storyline roleplaying i'm gonna do. to me its the looting/fighting/economy/crafting etc... sandbox games is what i like..

Loot rewards, high level mobs. That's exactly what stargate shouldn't touch. It's been done to death. Maybe some day some one will have an original thought in there heads. I just don't want to play the same game again that i've been playing for years. Looks like it's gonna be tho.
I have nothing agaisnt those kinds of games I like some of them also, but not Stargate, Pleeeeeease not Stargate.
I might just naive but loot dose not bother me that much especially if it comes form some annoying noob the developers have a great opportunity to make a good pvp game, maybe they have something up there sleeve but if they mess this up I will be surprised if they dont get fired. From what I can tell a lot of people are waiting mouth agape for this game. So if they do the looting thing it better be good.
As for the whole leveling thing if it turns out to be a wow type system I will rip my hair out. I think it would better if they had a mixed type of system like where skill influence your, level witch is more along the lines of a rank or something like that. I dont know I just this mmorpg dose not waste its potential for a quick buck.
IF they are going to do the standard leveling than they really need to add something else to make it different.
I was hoping for the freedom of swg. Can devs not think outside the box. I mean ffs, another level based game? It's so bloody linear.
