Its just an ape of a game with nothing really innovative other than the amount of drones who chase it. Sorry, played the game to full, even raided with the best... it just doesnt offer much.

First question, what is YOUR favorite mmropg?

Make mention of WoW and certain people have "knee-jerk" reactions. The article is not ONLY about WoW. Re-read what I said in the title. It is about the mmorpg INDUSTRY. They also mention other mmorpgs. As well as interivew Asian, and American players on their views. This article is a must ready for anyone who DISLIKES WoW as well as like it. It is for anyone who is a gamer, a buisness person, or just plain curious. No matter how much anyone dislikes WoW, the fact is WoW is helping every single other mmorpg! By bringing mmorpgs more into the public light. By making computer gamers less "stigmatized" which the article touches on.

Lord British was the first to comment on this, while WoW was still in developement. WoW is a good thing for all mmorpgs. That means anyone who dislikes WoW, WoW is still a good thing for your favorite mmorpg. ;)

The NY Times places WoW at roughly 7 million accounts. That's roughly 7 million NEW mmorpg players! If roughly half of them get bored with WoW (sooner or later they will make it to endgame) then that means 3+ million new mmorpg players in search of OTHER mmorpgs to check out! It's win, win, for everyone!

I read this last week from work. I didn't really find anything original about it.  In  fact I felt it was really nothing more than filler with a couple quotes thrown in for good measure. It wouldn't surprise me if it was based from an internal press release that Blizzard and other businesses often send news agencies, papers, etc.

As to WoW. Well It held me from Open Beta until a few months ago. I started as a 20+ hour a week gamer and ended it pretty much the same. I don't see ever going back as it simply has lost its magic. I have played MMO's since Asheron's Call launch and am awaiting the next "serious" MMO to come along. Til then I think I'll watch some Football and check out MMORPG.com for fun :).

As to the original poster's claim that this is an article about the industry I only say, maybe you should re-read the article. It is obviously a "play WoW cause its THE place to be" article. If you don't believe that, I teach Middle School and know a few good reading teachers.

More heralds of the future. Take note, gaming fans...your medium is slowly creeping further into public consciousness.

Ignore the game itself. It's not important. What matters is that $1 billion in revenues in a single year by a single title by a single company merits massive attention from some very large entities in this universe. This is both good and bad, as the bad elements will be more copycats and a great deal of "me too" drek. But the good is exponentially better. More titles, more investment, more angel investors backing indy titles, more infrastructure, more interest, more acceptance, more support, more depth, more quality, and most importantly more and more people.

I've said it before, and I'm going to reiterate it now: online gaming will be the dominant entertainment form worldwide in 25 years. It probably won't look anything like what we do today, but its roots are here and now.

I can't remember where I saw it but one estimate is this will be a $4.4 billion industry within 10 years. I'm going to add to that and think it was intended to list only the U.S. part of the industry.

Fairly old news.  The article is pretty much a carbon copy of the same article they did about a year ago.  Nothing really earth shattering in it.  And I am not convinced that WoW is good for the industry if 3 million people demanding gameplay similar to WoW flood the market.  We did "WoW gameplay" 8 years ago with EQ1...  I'd really like to see MMORPG's grow and expand far far beyond that antiquated playstyle.

It always cracks me up how people will play WoW for months, get to lvl 60 and say they've done it all. Then come here and post that WoW sucks. If it sucks so bad why did you play it so long..oh and BTW you are one of the "drones" just because you got bored after playing it for so long doesn't let you off the hook. You know you'll be right back at it when the new expansion comes out, you're not fooling anyone. haha

No where in my post did I say WoW "sucked."  I have tired of the game and the expansion doesn't tempt me in the least. I am actually looking forward to HOPEFULLY trying Vangard and possibly LOTRO betas to see if they are worth a shot at launch time.

"Sometimes, it just makes me want to burn this motherfucker down.  IMA BURN THIS MOTHERFUCKER DOWN, LETS BURN THIS MOTHER FUCKER DOWN!".

Thats how i feel when i hear WoW.  Anyways, wait, Blizzard is in Irvine, CA thats near me

That was a shotty article.  It was only about WoW, thought you said it talked about other games, it mentioned there names, didnt talk about them much.  It was like every other article about MMOs, nothing new or special in this one.

Oh yeah, to those WoWheads, i hate WoW.  Yes, ive done everything in game, got to 60, went mindlessly raiding for hours during the day, got purples, PvPed in there shitty BGs, did World PvP, barely any of that, PvP that had no point, Alliance or Horde gains nothing through wins, if you PvP a lot, its for the rank which is for the gear.  Ive crafted, farmed, looted, raided.  Yes, i did everything in WoW and i can say, it sucks.

Yeah that was deffinitly about the entire industry there. The "other" MMO's they mentioned were EQ II and SWG... and just mentioned them.

It's a pretty bad, basic article TBH.

If you played wow to 60 you woudl relise that's exactly how it feels. You then decide wether or not you want to go through it again or move on. Your 40 years old? Ha! doubt it you sound like you are 12.

WoW is a very good beginners mmorpg and people that like games like Diabolo. But that is about it. The good thing is, as people grow up in WoW, they will be looking for other mmorpg's, so there are more people interested in this genre of games, which in turn is good for all of them, as they now have a wider audience, thus more paying customers for all to go around. And that can't be a bad thing now ;)

I think it's neutral, neutral for everyone. There just aren't any MMORPGs designed to appeal to those 3 million new players that WOW has brought in, even WOW post-60 isn't designed to appeal to them. Companies make MMORPGs to appeal to the relatively small group of people that already play them, not to gamers in general. What MMORPGs don't have a big focus on some of playing for huge amounts of time, repeatedly repeating repetitive tasks, raiding and its ilk, PVP where 'how many hours have you played before' is the biggest factor in a win, and other stuff that is just not fun for most people?

Wow is for 7million peeps a great game but alot see now its one big grinding fest for epics, result many stop playing and want more out of a mmo.

Darkfall forums had more then year ago 4000 visitors these days and many come from wow over 30k visistors maybe even more now so wow effect is possitive.

And darkfall is one of few who are 100% not following mainstream mmo,s these days.
