If people want harsh death penalties they should join the army.
It's an all in one package, adrenal rush in combat and harsh penalties for error and failure.
I play games to relax, have fun, not to be punished for lag or the occasional bad decis…
How about... player expectations?
We want it all, now and we want it cheap.
When I changed my expectations from the games all of a sudden I was having fun again... go figure.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying, that the "kill ten bears" quest is redundant and doesn't actually need to be a quest. As a matter of fact it should not be a quest if the game was designed correctly.
For example:

I think the "disgust" you feel is that your expectations (what you want from the game) are the same... you want (despite the fact that it disgusts you) to rush to end game, you focus on the asshats and "bad mechanics".

apparently no one would
It sounds alright, but full loot pvp turns a lot of people off, especially people who have high latency and lag and can do nothing about it.

Played WoW for 5 years, the thought of returning, foe Cata or otherwise, makes me get a sick feeling in my stomach. Don't get me wrong, I think it is a great game, but... I have played it too much.
