Hope this helps, I'm on the fence about starting this game myself... According to what I have been told, there is no subscription fee (currently) but you still need to buy the game to get access. That said, I don't think there is a trial.

These series of patches may very well 'save' the game; I played in the last phase of OBT and I liked it, but not to the point of spending money on it. Hopefully with the upcoming patches, it will be a more complete experience.

I had the same problem and tried the same instructions to fix it. I however, have managed to make it so the client doesn't even get past the 'downloading update'screen. I'm sure it works but at this point I'm going to try and reinstall FFXIV...

No one I know uses the default control scheme. I use right mouse button for blocking and have mouse_4 auto-run, mouse_5 to open and close the interface. YOU have to change the button. And I encourage you to try again, just have some patience.
