I always loved the concept of ESS, that make perfect sense. It will give reward to roamer and force small scale pvp.

Ultima Online, DAOC, WOW and Eve Online are all good example where pvp and pve merge pretty well into a single game. All thoses game were solid and you could trive in pve, pvp or a combinaison of both.

The best PvE experience for me is in SWTOR. All quest and subquest have full cinematic with choice. Each class have their unique main quest.
