I check the gameplay first then if I like it I check out the story. If I like both the gameplay and story I check out the finer parts of what makes a good RPG to me.
You don't play the game for the sake of playing the game. You don't play the game "because everyone's playing it". If you find it necessary like that...well, that's your choice I guess.
I think kids are partially to blame. It's like what was said before, they usually have the shorter attention span that they "cheat" their way to get strong.
