Archlord has now been out about a month and unfortunately the game is a failure on many levels.  I have just deleted a level 40+ character and have no intention of going any further in this joke of a game.

Some of the release bugs have been fixed, like not being able to cross bridges, getting stuck everywhere, floating characters, bad portals, broken Auction House, stats disapearing on items etc.  But the lag spikes are very frequent and very costly to your character.  You will die many times simply because the entire game spikes and a boatload of players drop dead across the world if they are pulling multiple monsters.  Strangely there are not that many people playing the game so it can't be due to player overload.  Poor platform service is the problem.

The graphics come from the 1990's.  All the buildings in the game are just boxcard shells.  You don't actually ever enter any.  The dungeons are highly repititive using the exact same graphics from dungeon to dungeon.  Trees, bushes, rocks, buildings, lampposts etc have an amazing way of grabbing your character and trapping him until you can delicately do a dance to get a way from the graphic snare.  Even worse, you can get grabbed by an object and appear to keep running but your character is still back at that object and likely to get mobbed.  Thats right, you can be running freely along on your screen but in fact you are about to die because the graphics are so fekd in this game that you are not really where you see yourself at.  And then poof, u die for seemingly no reason, warp back across the map to the point u got snared and get to see your carcass eating dirt. Geeez.

You can't pick the sex of your character.  Who thought this idea was a winner?

The entire AL world is in fact very small.  You can run the entire length of it on horse in a short time.  There are very few dungeons and these dungeons are quite small in comparison to other games.  The mobs out in the field are plentiful, perhaps too plentiful to the point that it chokes the environment.

Horses do allow for faster travel but are not for the PvP environment.  When you mount a horse you lose all your buffs, even potion ones.  When you get off you are a skinny target and have to wait for the buff and/or potion timer to recycle before you can buff up again.  This is very annoying.  You can not be snared on a horse but you can be stunned.  Not sure what the sense of that is.

WASD movement is incomplete and there appears to be no effort to ever create a robust movement environment.

The game lacks imagination and content.  You will kiill the same style of creature through many levels.  Only its label changes.  AL has managed to take a spider or treeant image and repeat it through all levels to the point of naseua.

Most of the quests are just plain silly, but some quests do give handsome rewards.  Killing Boss mobs is boring, its just kite-n-kill.  No real effort is needed.  I could solo them all... yawn.

The PvP is lame and has little point.  Other than a few people running around PKing others engaged with monsters or endlessly camping the same bridge out of town (which comically is now against the PvP rules), there isn't much else.  Yes there are occasional 'guild wars' but this is nothing more than two guilds deciding to combat for an hour or so.  It has no theme and serves no purpose other than bragging rights on a forum.

Even if AL eventually does put in sieging it is already a horrible joke.  Their idea of sieging is a single lack-luster castle for a staged event in a dedicated battleground.  Yawn.

The community is weak because the primary server can barely muster a few hundred players at peak times.  That alone speaks for the failure of this game.

The GMs are generally aimable, but can do little about the inherrent bugs.  Though they do respond quickly when you get stuck somewhere (which is far too often).

10 years ago this game might have gotten a 7 out of 10 rating.  Today its not even worth rating because its so incomplete and is clearly going nowhere.  It lands somewhere between Vaporware and Pre-beta.

Spare yourself the time and money, stay far away from this disaster.

I agree with quite a few points of the post, as well as I disagree with some of them. but I don't think Asian MMORPG's are really what the OP was looking for.

It gets boring really quick. The quests are predictive and the tasks are boring, find this, kill nonsoloable monster, talk to him.....

Good solid review that pretty well sums up the games faults.

This game might be good in 3-9 months, we can always hope.

OP really nails the game.  It was funny to see him get flamed almost immediately by the fanboi!  Didn't think anyone was playing the game long enough to be a fanboi but I guess there is at least one.  lol.

Anyway, what the OP says is true.  I was one of the winners of the MMORPG.COM contest and got a free copy of the game.  I played a toon from each of the three races up to level 20 (elementist, mage, and beserker) just to make sure I got a good look at what the game had to offer.  I would have a hard time believing that someone could come from WOW or L2 and enjoy this game for any length of time.  I say this because this game seems to have very little thought put into it.  It is more like an asian grinder with a few extra features rolled up in a pretty package.

Who is the archlord... who is even in the running.  Nobody is.  Maybe someday there will be but for now it is a bunch of folks trying it out, discovering what it is and leaving.  The community is not bad and i partied up a lot of the time so I would not have to constantly loot (they call party play, auto-loot as you don't have to pick up the loot when in a party).  There are people bored with wow and looking for a change.  For me at least, this is not it.  I am glad I didn't have to pay $50  to find out what this was as I would have been very disappointed.

The game is very unfinished in some parts and poorly designed and not well thought out overall.  There are things that really make you wonder what were they thinking.  Like the epic gear that drops off every mob in the game.  While it may be cool to get an epic sword it sucks the fun out of it when you get it off the very first mob you kill and by the end of the day I had half a dozen.  I put them up for sale but your space to sell is so small that most end up in the bank.  I just started selling them to the NPC and giving them to those that passed by that wanted them.  Getting stuck on everything in the world is really annoying as is the constant rubberbanding.  It is like a scene from the matrix just trying to walk across town.  Luckily the world is so very small that it is not a long walk.

Leave the village and it is like being in a big long ditch.  Look at how the areas are laid out.  The pathing is way off and I was getting stuck all the time trying to get to where I needed to go.  Combat is really tedious and it is easy to become entranced my the repetitive mindless action.  It is like working in a factory on an assembly line for 10 hours.  Left click-drink potion-hit spacebar to pick up treasure (prolly something epic) then move to the next mob rinse and repeat.  The game becomes a real challenge to see if you can do it for any length of time without your mind wandering off as the only real concern is "do you have enough potions to spam your way to success".  I have played other grinders and if the combat animations are varied and there is actually something to do during combat, I can stick with it.  This game has the most drab combat and the most clear cut formula I have ever seen.  ZZZZZzzzzzz please wake me up when its over.  There are ocassional "named" monsters but these are no problem if you have ever played an MMO that involves kiting especially considering you will be potion spamming all the way.  To break the boredom I found myself turning to a little libation during gameplay.  I got up to get a beer (I discovered though I rarely imbibe, drinking tends to make this game a lot more fun!) and when I came back my young nephew who was over visiting (6 years old) who had never played an MMO in his life had managed to kill garrot (a named hog) about three times after my brother showed him how to potion spam and left click to attack.  There is no challenge to this game for anyone who has even the most basic understanding of MMO gameplay.  Even if the most challenging game you have ever played is WOW you will own at this game if you have the patience to perform the same actions over and over and over again and have enough potions in your tiny litte backpack.

PVP might as well not be in the game it is so crappy.  I have played some really good pvp titles and this is by and far the worst pvp system I have ever seen.  What were they thinking?  Lets give the player "Rogue" points for PVP so he can not be allowed to sell or use the Auction House and lose even more XP (read gind more) when he dies???  Staying inside a 4 level limit is very hard when there is a 100 level range.  You would have to hunt around all over to find someone within range to fight.  The battleground is a joke and once again, the craptastic control scheme/constant lag and rubberbanding rendered it a fruitless moot activity.  They wanted to keep it from becoming a gank fest, I know, but this is a very poor way to do it to say the least.

Crafting- lolololololol  eeerrrmmm... right.  Somebody buy the developers a subscription to any major MMO and let them see what crafting means.  WOW, L2, EQ2 or really any of them.  Please if this is what you call crafting, leave it out .  Put it in the same trash can as the pvp system and save room for the thing you call questing.

There is no depth in AL, it is more of a beta than a finished game yet they want to try and charge as if it is a major MMO like EQ2, WOW, L2 or any of the big names.  Unbelievable.  I think silk road online is a much more finished and playable game than AL and it is free.  There are other grinders like Hero online that are a lot less tedious to play and a lot more fun and they are also free.

Overall you really need to read all the reviews at a number of different sites before playing this game.  For the fanboi, no offense bro, I am bored with WOW and L2 also, but this turd just isin't it.

Wow,lilithfanboi managed to get a jump on this accurate description of a trainwreck faster than anyone else...

Of course he had nothing intelligent to say to actually contribute to the discussion or explain why he thinks OP is wrong, just stating "I'm right and you're wrong,Archlord is the second coming of christ kthxbai".
Then again, thats all i'd expect from a fanboi like lilithishtar, although i hoped he would actually provide an intellectual response for a change.

I have been playing since the first day of retail in NA. I have a level 33 Elementalist and I am having fun. I level only 10% on the weekdays and make about a level a week because I level about 50-60% on the weekend. I see why people quit, it is because alot of them do nothing but grind and do not take time to enjoy the game. Why dont you go play it again, but this time as a source of fun, not work.

My question is this: with a gamestyle as similar to Lineage II as this one, why play this over Lineage II?  Is it because everyone in L2 has such a big headstart that it's more of a pain contemplating levelling there?  Is it because this game apparently has more quests than L2, even though it's very much still a grinding game?  Is it just because it's new?  Are there any other reasons?  I'm curious, because to me when I looked at this game, it struck me to be rather similar in many ways to L2.

I beta tested this game and knew it wasn't ready for release. You would think they would fix all the problems before a game is to be released but you would be surprised how many beta's i have done and seen how crappy the game is still but they release it anyways.

It's all about the dead president's.

I've been thinking that if a company wnated to start a new game from scratch, that it would probably be better to buy an existing game and try ot make it better than start from scratch.

You should give some respect to the game developers and especially the players of the game. Bugs do get fixed over time and it's good that you are pointing them out or the game would never get any better.

good thing its not a failure image

I really would not call it a complete failure.  There are people that play it and have a good time and ultimately, that is what it is all about.

The point a lot of us are trying to make is that the game has some very big problems and it is the general feeling among many experienced gamers that the game is not worth the monthly fee they are charging.  If the game were free to play I would still not play it.  Your time is worth a lot more than any monthly fee and as it stands right now, there are other games that do a better job of what AL is trying to do.

If you enjoy AL then more power to you.

That was my issue. This game seems  very much in the same family as L2. So I already play L2 and just didn't feel the need to "start over" as it were. Especially since L2 has been out for just about 3 years and has a lot of polish to it.

Still, if you like Korean grinders and don't mind a game in its early stages, this might be the game for you. I like how you modify weapons ALOT and liked the auction house as it allowed me to sell when I wasn't on or when I was doing something else.

Sorry but Archlord is one big failure, There server population is dropping every day, Two friends of mine, were forced to leave there server by the lack of GM support, they waitted 12 days for a Char to be fixed, when they finally confronted the GMs. The GMs did nothing, and did not even try to help, all they gave was excuses, I know i was in the room at the time.

Its a sad fact, but Archlord should be F2P game, and until that happens, AL is like DnL a waste of money.

You guys need to take something from the OPs post - be extremely judgemental of new games as if you lvl to 40 sub-consciously hoping for an end-game then thats time of your life that youre not getting back.
