I just started playing Eve Online with a 14 day trial, it's a very deep game, and definitely a long-term game, so if you are looking for instant gratification and quick action, this is not for you. But even as a 2 day-old Eveian, look what I managed to do!
That's a screenshot of my ship just reaching the destination fresh out of warp travel 2 jumps away from my home station to pick up a missle launcher I bought at the market, it's freaking awesome and so realistic.
I was never into MMOG before playing Eve, I played console games for the most part except for FPS like Call of Duty (I enjoy historical combat recreation), I never gave games like WoW a chance knowing that I would get massacred as a noob unless I dedicate myself to master the game, which isn't worth my time. Call of Duty is fun for me because with some practice you can do well, I became a very good sniper in multiplayer and if I feel like it I can go on a mean rampage and get 80 kills in a session. I'm so used to instant games like multiplayer where I join a quick game for a short time. Eve is very flexible in a sense because it can suit any style of gameplay and can be kind to noobs if one takes proper steps, however you can just go on combat missions like an arcade game, or join a corp. and be part of a bigger picture and play like a strategy game. So if a console-hardened gamer like myself can get into a MMOG like Eve, anyone can, and if you like sci-fi theme, you HAVE to TRY it once.
Eve truly is a universe recreated in cyberspace, with real people shaping up a very real world of politics, trade, war, and technology, it doesn't get any real than this, oh and it has great graphics, I don't think I'll even buy PlayStatioin 3 console now that I have Eve.

So, what you're saying is that in other MMOs the first month you play you're max level and can wtfpwn anyone? Right? That's all it really takes in EVE to get some decent combat skills. Maybe 2.
God that argument is so fucking stupid. So it takes real time to train skills? Does it not take real time to grind those skills? Unless you play 15hrs a day or more, the time it takes for you to get into high end PVP in EVE is much shorter than ANY mmo out right now. Even WoW. If you can get your first char to lvl 60 in 2 months, without playing 15+hrs a day, then you are damn good at the game.
I probably dont like grinding any more than you do, but way they done it in EvE isn't that great and has it flaws. EvE has coded limit how fast you can progress. You are looking up for 2-3 months learning skill learning + after that skills required for t2 guns/ammo and you need lot of other support skills.
In GW for example you can get max level in day and casually played in week and pvp lvl 20 char day you start. Does that make you wtfpwn anyone? No. You need to learn how to use your skills. War Machine guild didn't win these tournaments in GW just because they were all level 20, but because they were skilled and practised good team work.
As for your idea of trial accounts pwning battleships. Yeah, swarm of newbies who only need to be able to A) follow target called b) press activate guns/scramblers/web/etc. Very little room for any invidual skill. In fact swarm of newbies can do that in even most of level grinding games. Comparing EVE to GW is really silly, imo. Sure, you can just ignore all of the PvE in GW and simply PvP with a prerolled lvl 20 character ... but for what? For the ladder? For pride? For the "fun of it"?
PvP in GW is totally inconsequential. Losing means nothing except a burned ego, and winning doesn't mean much either. You aren't fighting over anything other than advancement. It's fun, but fun in a way that sparring is fun ... can be enjoyable, but really inconsequential.
EVE is 100% opposite. The fighting is completely consequential. Losing means a lot, it costs you a lot. People are fighting over territorial claims, resources, chokepoint travel nodes and the like ... not just "for the heck of it". The PvP in EVE is part of the broader sandbox game where you are constantly in competition with other players for everything ... resources, trade, territory, industry, etc. The combat PvP is only one aspect of PvP in EVE ... indystry, trade, research and technology are other vectors every succesful group needs to have someone master in order to compete with everyone else. It's a "total war/total competition" concept, not a sparring concept like GW.
Don't get me wrong, GW is a very well made game and it can be a lot of fun. But the PvP in EVE is much broader and more significant and meaningful than the situation in GW. Is it less accessible than GW? Of course! EVE is hardcore, GW is not. They're just very different games from A to Z and comparing them seems pointless to me, but it;s even more pointless to suggest that GW has better PvP simply because you can roll up a lvl 20 immediately and jump into consequence-free arena-style PvP where the only thing you are fighting for is your own pride. To me that's pretty boring when compared with actually fighting a virtual war with someone over territory, resources, diplomacy, etc.

I agree, you should wait until next week to start the 14-day trial. You'll want every minute to enjoy the game instead of having to deal with whatever might go wrong while they're doing the upgrades.
Originally posted by Taram 2) EVE is not a game that everyone will enjoy. It's 100% based around PVP.
For all that people say this, it doesn't really seem to be true in practice. Yes, there's a lot of PVP, but most of the time people spend in-game will be spent on PVE grinding. The consequence of losing a ship is that you have to PVE grind to replace it and the benefit of holding 0.0 territory is that you can PVE grind more effectively.
It is possible to shift the PVE grinding to someone else; pirates can make moneyy by taking stuff when they kill people, and people who have been in a corp for a while can set things up so that newbies get stuck with the mining grind, but overall people spend far more time in the game will be spent grinding for ISK, minerals, reputation, etc. in PVE situations than in fighting other players in the PVP that the game is allegedly focused on.
As far as whether you should try it, it's got a free trial so it's kind of a silly question; you know someone's going to say yes and someone's going to say no, and it doesn't cost you anything, so why ask?

They just cut the requirements for advanced learning skill from the basic at level 5 to the basic at level 4. This cuts down the time to train the learning skills to a few weeks and you are now also given a lot more skills at higher level when you create a new char, for example you can get small t2 guns in less than a week.

Thanks for any help.
the download is free. 14 days of free play. when the game comes back up, characters will start with many more skill points than previously.
eve requires you to read and think a lot.
eve rather does require you to play with people, rather than solo. although you CAN solo.
do the tutorial. no matter what else you do/don't do before starting play, complete the tutorial.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

In eve you don't even need much skill apart from fleet commander who can mess up fight pretty badly or cause great win while inviduals dont need much skill other than character skills they learned while offline and being able to follow targets and keep activating modules, maybe align to safe spot and jump once being target more than one.
It's funny how lot of eve players bring up the fact you can lose a lot and so it must mean more, same people who bash level grinding game and completely ignore how much grinding vs actual pvp there is in eve. Most of time it's preparing, grinding isk way or another and then few minutes of pvp and in worst case few seconds if you happen to be first target in big fleet fight and get under focus fire of 50 enemy ships. Doesn't sound much fun for me.
ive just came back to eve after a long break and was enjoying it but there are still alot of bugs. one atm wont let you log in, the aquaring bulk data crap the 1st day was great no problem 2nd day had to wait 5 mnis no problem again 3rd day cant log in at all tryed all ways to get it working off post on the eve forums. also tryed the customer support which i found useless after they tryed to help and couldnt fix my problem they are just ignoring me now. there is a new patch today though so hopefuly this will fix the problems. it is a good game not to everyones taste but the free trial is there for 14 days cant hurt to try.

I would suggest trying any game you desire and can afford. Read the reviews on a game and if there are some points that you like and think you want to give it a try then go for it!
Asking for advice if you should try this or try that is alright but lets face it, you will get the fanbois that will scream their game if the bestest in da worldest and you will get those that cry avoid it like the plague.
So read up on the game and try it for yourself.
Free trials help and Eve is one of those games that offer a free trial. Oh, and while the turorial is a little boring I suggest doing it because of the basics you learn.

Ummm... Drag... when you came back you DID uninstall and re-install the latest version... right? There are tons of known issues with trying to update way old clients to the newer version. It's best to pull down the latest build before logging in if you've been gone more than a couple months.

You don't need to wait months training learning skills and fly t2 ships in order to play and enjoy the game as well as make money. If you smart, you can make millions a day without even undocking from ther station. The truth is, Eve is only online game where you can avoid grind of all kinds, but since many people come from WoW and games alike, they are trying to use standrad approach to "win", which is:
a) Power leveling
b) Grinding or repeating same task over and over in order to gain some reward or advantage
c) Overkilling ( bigger is better)
None of above works in EvE. You can't power level, but you can win if you are lower level (a lot less skill points). You can grind, but it will lead you nowhere. Biigger ship and guns doesn't mean much and you can easily die to small frigate.
I don't quite get where all the "fighting in eve is so boring, it's all automatic" is coming from. Did you guys just do 1k pirates in 1.0 space or something?
Eve is the game where I have the most war stories from. Being an electronic warfare user, I ran into a lot of situations where I was outnumbered and outgunned with my warp drive jammed, but using various gadgets I managed to slip away. I haven't had such edge-of-seat experiences in any other games.
You have to pvp in order to appreciate eve's combat.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
I was using GW as example to how you can have game where you get max level fast and that still doesn't make you pwn anyone, because you need to have skill to play.

So basicly its extremle hard for new players to establish them self in EvE without lets say ebay?

EVE is the only game that i actauly get cold sweats from PVPing or hauling trade goods... and i love it
Eve is the game where I have the most war stories from.
