(In response to what I feel as Darkseer's rather biased post towards the game in November, here is a December review by three players who used to spend huge amounts of time in-game.)



Here are three Roman (well two and a half, I played barbarian) views on the current State of the World.

I (Matthius), Tontis, and Vlad will be submitting our scores and reasons regarding all the features Darkseer commented on one month ago.



*Real-time 'twitch' combat balanced with character skills

Matthius - Very basic. Suffers from repetition disease, often encountered when speaking with the below individuals. As a positive some strategy is involved but not enough.

Tontis - Unrealistic. Spam attacking, no manual defense.

Rating: 2/5

Vlad - Nothing special. Mastered skills not as effective as they appear.

Rating: 3/5

* Crafting

Matthius - Quite in-depth, however many features are lacking certain aspects which cause a shaky foundation for the whole system.

Rating: 3.5/5

Tontis - Very in-depth. Boring. Not everything required for system is in, sometimes too complex.

Rating: 3/5

Vlad - Good depth, variety. Needs balancing.

Rating: 4/5



* Construction

Matthius - No large scale constructions are even possible, even with outrageous prices as they are.

Rating: 2/5

Tontis - Basic construction only. Building requirements ridiculous.

Rating: 1/5

Vlad - Lack of content.

Rating: 2/5



* Player housing

Matthius - Only mud huts and rentables exist. They very rarely open up rentables, and I think I have a better chance of winning the lottery than renting a two-story house.

Tontis - There is none unless you donate into the VERM. Or waste time living out of your project site. Who the hell lives in a project site? I mean we are a civilized empire living on wood boards and shit houses.

Vlad - Horrible rent/lease system. Too many building types unopened. Only rudimentary housing craftable.

* Day & Night

Matthius - It’s in, although far too often do I log-in to darkness.

Rating: 3/5

Tontis - Nights are too long. Darkness affects too many parts of the game. Otherwise impressive because it doesn’t crash the server.

Vlad - Can’t construct at night, otherwise, standard feature.

Rating: 2/5

* Open PvP and safe areas

Matthius - There should be no safe areas, and PvP is often hard to come by.

Rating: 2/5

Tontis - Some places (Corstopitum) too safe. Open PvP hard to come by with low population.

Rating: 3/5

Vlad - Roman Provincial Law too limiting, interfering with gameplay. Not enough settlements to have legitimate safe areas for new people.

Rating: 2/5

* No levelling treadmill

Matthius - Can I give a negative? The whole game revolves around levelling.

Rating: 3/5

Tontis - Bullshit.

Rating: 0/5

Vlad - Levelling in disguise.

* Realistic character limitations

Matthius - Lacking in limitations regarding skill development. Too many master smith/smelters/potters/fishers.

Rating: 3/5

Tontis - Realistic limitations that sometimes go too far.

Rating: 3/5

Vlad - Lack of balance, too many limitations in some areas and not enough in others.

Rating: 3/5

* Wounds, Injuries & Treatment

Matthius - Not in, besides aiding and bind wound.

Rating: 1/5

Tontis - Fact that /aid in is gives it a 1. Hard to train and overly expensive.

Rating: 1/5

Vlad - See above. Fact that you can do it is something, but it is poorly implemented.

* No camping

Matthius - There has been regular spawn camping in-game with very little action by the developers.

Rating: 2/5

Tontis -

Tontis, “The entire game is camping. I sit for 8 hours while something rots.”

Vlad, “Spawn camping.”

Tontis, “Yeah, that’s pretty bad too.”

Vlad - Player spawns poorly protected.

Rating: 2/5

* Fully freeform gameplay

Matthius - It is quite freeform, although oftentimes boring.

Rating: 4/5

Tontis - Bases itself on and does well. Some limitations that were unforeseen.

Vlad - Broken mechanics limit what you can do.

Rating: 3/5

* Historic authenticity

Matthius - Very authentic. Sometimes beyond the point of reason.

Rating: 5/5

Tontis - There are huts in a main Roman spawn point. And a shark.

Rating: 3/5

Vlad - As authentic as it could possibly be without overloading gameplay.

Rating: 5/5

* Many communities, one world

Matthius - Very true, many communities although sometimes a bit too isolated.

Rating: 4/5

Tontis - Two hours to travel between communities. flip that.

Rating: 1/5

Vlad - Not enough players for that much diversity.

Rating: 2/5

* Furniture & Decoration

Matthius - Nope.

Rating: 0/5

Tontis - There is none. Except for in the basilica.

Rating: 0.5/5

Vlad - All the houses were aren’t allowed to rent are fully furnished. Taunt us with it.

* Clothing & Armour

Matthius - Need far more options, even if they don’t give bonuses. At current there is very little reason to use clothing and/or armour.

Tontis - Armor is too expensive, clothing is too difficult to make.

Vlad - Not enough variety. Poor balance between gameplay and realism in crafting. Puts severe limitations on use of armor and clothing. The graphics SUCK for it. Shoulder goes through the shield.

* Realistic avatar characteristics

Matthius - Fairly realistic. Not much to say.

Rating: 3/5

Tontis - It’s broken.

Rating: 2/5

Vlad - Not enough variety and, uh, very poor graphical problems.

* Lore

Matthius - Only /pray command which rarely does anything.

Rating: 1/5

Tontis - There are elements of it, but really isn’t any.

Rating: 0.5/5

Vlad - Completely absent.

Rating: 0/5

* Elysium

Matthius - At least it is in, but it has SO many more possibilities.

Rating: 2/5

Tontis - The fact that they have it. Yay! It is retarded at the simplicity of it.

Rating: 1/5

Vlad - Meh.

Rating: 3/5

* Weight

Matthius - Encumbrance is not in.

Rating: 0/5

Tontis - Everybody looks the same. I want a melting pot.

Rating: 0/5

Vlad - Not implemented.

Rating: 0/5

* Liquids

Matthius - They are in, but only water and tar.

Rating: 2/5

Tontis - They put them in well. …I don’t know?

Rating: 3/5

Vlad - Lack of content for other beverages. (Pepsi?) Thirst timer is a generic timer and you cannot reset it by drinking at any given point.

Rating: 2/5

* Shops

Matthius - Not in, shops are limited, nothing to even make them look like shops, and hard to find.

Rating: 1/5

Tontis - Only real ones are AI and the economy is ‘da shitz’ so having a shop is automatically non-profitable.

Vlad - Poorly implemented interface with merchants, shops are not in.

Rating: 2/5

* Resources & Trade

Matthius - Huge monopolies detract from otherwise numerous trade options. Lack of need in varying parts of the game, as everyone makes their own things.

Rating: 2/5

Tontis - Basically not in, not realistic, unlimited NPC resources, etc. Just very unrealistic. Trading is dominated by VERM contributors and player trade degrades with declining player population.

Vlad - Low population interferes with trade. RedBedlam has monopoly on many needed resources.

* Elders & Masters

Matthius - Horribly done and should be removed.

Rating: 0/5

Tontis - They serve no purpose other than frustration.

Rating: 1/5

Vlad - Role in attending is poorly done and they can be knocked out of position and won’t communicate.

Rating: 1/5

* Game mail

Matthius - It works besides a few minor bugs.

Rating: 4/5

Tontis - Barely ever works and you are flooded with ‘Log-Out’ messages.

Rating: 1/5

Vlad - Not very user-friendly.

Rating: 2/5

* Ranged chat

Matthius - Works fine.

Rating: 5/5

Tontis - Speaking has a certain range, yet talking with someone is difficult.

Rating: 2/5

Vlad - S’ok.

Rating: 3/5

* Socials & Animations

Matthius - Numerous emotes add to dialogue, but they also appear with graphical glitches.

Rating: 4/5

Tontis - “Woo-hoo”. “Alright!” -KFR

Vlad - Bad voice-overs.

Rating: 1/5

* An ever-growing range of characters, faces and ethnicities

Matthius - It looks like we live in Germany circa 1942. Faces are above-average besides eyes and noses.

Tontis - There’s only white people.

Rating: 0/5

Vlad - Exist in name only.

* Badges, Reputations, Friends and Foes

Matthius - Horribly stuck in and it actually subtracts from the game experience when you are killed for a badge. Friends and foes work fine, not great not horrible.

Tontis - Badges are poorly implemented and take away from many aspects.

Rating: 1/5

Vlad - Badges and reputations are broken. Poorly implemented and they don’t have any significant affect other than on citizenship.

* Encounters

Matthius - No encounters, ever.

Rating: 0/5

Tontis - Only can do [errands] during the day.

Vlad - Encounters with what?

* Weather

Matthius - I was not in-game on the day it rained. As below, ALWAYS CLOUDY.

Rating: 2/5

Tontis - Saw rain once. Always cloudy.

Rating: 2/5

Vlad - I saw it rain once as well. Rain went through rooftops and crashed users.

Rating: 1/5

* Tracking

Matthius - Haven’t tried it, no comment.

Rating: -/5

Tontis - Poorly implemented, doesn’t work, can’t work with animals.

Rating: 1/5

Vlad - Poorly implemented.

* Diet

Matthius - Not in besides foods that act the same. Adds a small amount of roleplay.

Rating: 2/5

Tontis - You can eat varying foods but it has no affect, as a loaf of bread feeds you as much as a plum.

Rating: 1/5

Vlad - Partially implemented. It’s there, I guess.

Rating: 2/5

* Guilds

Matthius - Haven’t been working despite obvious lies that they are in on numerous occasions. A huge factor that remains to be ignored.

Tontis - Functions aren’t working, only several guilds are guilds. Rest are just a group of people.

Vlad - Broken mechanics and complete lack of guild functions make guilds more hindering than they are worth.

* Households

Matthius - Abwah?

Tontis - What households?

Vlad - What?

* News networks

Matthius - /news is in however with a bug that does not allow overflow. Forums do their job sufficiently.

Tontis - There are none. Forums are the source of news.

Vlad - Out of game methods are rampant, very little action between communities.

* Law & Politics

Matthius - Biggest thing that needs a redo. Hard to get voted in, voted in have very little power, and worst of all everything about it is a ‘mystery’!…

Tontis - Politics are in the game, law sometimes detracts from experience.

Rating: 4/5

Vlad - Politics between groups does exist, but broken game mechanics and the fact that officials don’t even have any power really detract from its possibilities.

* Quests

Matthius - Besides errands and attending quests these are lacking.

Tontis - There are none.

Vlad - Attending quests are poor and there are no other quests.

* Interactive story arc

Matthius - Community supplies all the interactivity. The main figureheads promised pre-release do not even play.

Rating: 2.5/5

Tontis - Poorly implemented. Politics form some story arc, very repetitive scenarios.

Rating: 2/5

Vlad - Some of the interaction between people leads to interesting roleplaying opportunities.

* First & Third-person perspective

Matthius - In and rather polished.

Rating: 4/5

Tontis - There is one.

Rating: 3/5

Vlad - They’re there.

Rating: 2/5

* 3D audio

Matthius - Rather good audio, although sometimes strange “filler” noises.

Rating: 4/5

Tontis - It crashes the game and sometimes does not function.

Rating: 2/5

Vlad - No comment.

Rating: 2/5

* South Caledonia

Matthius - Very few boards are buildable, much less populated. One big lie about new lands.

Rating: 2/5

Tontis - Very realistic yet distracting because of travel times.

Rating: 3/5

Vlad - It’s realistic and accurate but travel times reduce interaction and playability and you can’t use 98% of it.

Rating: 1/5

* SpeedTreeRT

Matthius - Trees are rather well done. Average.

Rating: 3/5

Tontis - Three types of trees. Yay.

Rating: 2/5

Vlad - Not enough trees. Models aren’t very good.

Rating: 2/5

* Dynamic lighting & Shadows

Matthius - Lighting very buggy, although it helps.

Rating: 3/5

Tontis - Not realistic in my experiences. Lights up the game.

Rating: 2/5

Vlad - Lighting does not fade in and out well over distances and the game seems perpetually dark.

Rating: 2/5

* Patch system

Matthius - Mine takes ten minutes to patch. Horribly slow.

Rating: 1/5

Tontis - Should be automatic.

Rating: 2/5

Vlad - It’s ok, doesn’t really matter in my opinion.

Overall Summation

Matthius - 32/100

Meh pretty much sums it up. Changes needs to be made, and if RedBedlam fails to see that working on a feature and not telling the community anything about it pre or post will ultimately doom them. I wish them the best of luck, and I will go down with the ship if it does go down.



Don’t expect me to be quiet about it though.



Tontis - 40/100

It flip sucks. I realized that at the end of this review. The only reason I kept playing for as long as I did was because of the community that keeps it running.

Vlad - 50/100

Based primarily on potential, the implementation of the game mechanics and features are poorly thought out. Too many things are broken or halfway implemented. The game has very little entertainment value in its current state.

    I would myself go with something like 30-40% and thats based purely on what it COULD have been.Take that away and its real rating is much lower.
