Seriously people - download the beta, play it - then make your own comparison. It does look like EQ, it does play as smoothly as retail Shadowlame and it has about as much depth as current SWG. But hey dont listen to me or others who played it - download the beta and make your own judgement call.
After all the current state of the game is still free.....

Old Soiled socks can lead to a lot of fun.
Ding dong ditch, anyone?
Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...
I downloaded the Beta, played it, then uninstalled the 16GB behemoth from my PC. I will wait for a trial to come out when it is more polished. The models are very very weak and it was laggy. I couldn't really get into it enough to stick with it to report bugs, etc. It was uninspired by my view.
I did like how they had a questionaire for quests so that people can report if it was too easy, etc. Hopefully they can make adjustments for that. By comparison, I have played in closed betas for WOW, CoH, and Auto Assault; and they were all more stable and more interesting that this. It wouldn't be a big deal if they hadn't hyped this game as the next generation MMO.
Flame away . . .
I agree with Pangerman on that. So far, Vanguard does look pretty lame just by the shape of its beta. I don't understand why a game so ugly and blend can weight over 20gig either
Anyway, i didn't get engrossed into it and removed it after a week. I guess the only other beta worth my time will be War Hammer if i can get into it...
Vanguard sucks but i'm not suprised at all. It's as good as it gets from old EQ dinosaurs maker. There's no reason to quit your current MMO for it, no matter what it is, and there will be even less reasons to play it once War Hammer is out... So let's give it the boot.
What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...
ugly?
Turn up your settings... the game is gorgeous.
looking similar and "clones" are another major issue with big business taking over MMO's. EA and SOE want success they want payout and they want subscribers. If your an investor do you want to invest in a game thats completely revolutionary and may not take? or something similar to the biggest game out there with some features that seperate it enough and add on other games weaknessess?
We are going to get games that are more and more similar as time goes on as the people with the money want to succeed.
Check out this trolls post history. Over half of his posts are trolling Vanguard. He is a man on a mission.
But do download the beta and try it, but don't try and play it above high performance unless you have a gig of ram and/or a processor that was manufactured within the last calendar year.
For me, Vanguard has rekindled the feeling that UO and EQ brought me.
Bleh bleh bleh - same old same old by the same old people who hated it just as much as they did 2 weeks ago. At this point I'm starting to wonder if these people are getting some type of sexual gratification from posting all the hate threads about Vanguard. It's got to be the only reason they keep posting the same stuff over and over again.

yeah he is a troll and you are a vanboy so it balances things out.I have read so many complaints about Vanguard.. I kinda understand some of them but here is my take..
Graphic's: They don't blow me away, yet they are very good.. As far as the washed out look some say.. If you change yur settings just a little bit <from the default> you can really liven up the screen w/ all that is there.. It really is very nice looking.. After playing this game I went back and looked at WoW.. Sure they are very colorful.. But you can't compare them to Vanguard.. Vanguard looks very real and immersive.. WoW has never had that going for them.. Great Graphics in WoW but not compareable IMO to VG .. Also I played EQ2, the graphics there were very washed out.. Not alot of change in a single Zone <from my limited experience there>.. Very different in different areas of VG ..
Bug's and Lag: I'm concerned here.. But, Sigil has admittedly said they will continue to work on this game.. They would like to have a couple more months for polish but financially not feasible for them after 5 years of production.. Also, I played the open beta of WoW.. There was bugs and lag in that game during Open Beta as well.. Doesn't anyone remember that?.. In Fact, I believe they gave everyone after release, a free week or 2 due to the issues that arose after release..
I also read how people say that WoW runs on low-end machines.. I played WoW on and off since it's release.. Everytime they had a big patch on the game it caused massive problems with my computer working it and many others.. Sure, it may only effected 5% of their customers when it happened.. But when you have 7 million people playing that would be 350,000 people not being able to run their game after their patch.. I personally have gone thru 3 vid cards and 2 computers to keep WoW running.. Not low end computers either.. but mid-grade.. I have run for 6 months straight with no problem playing the game then after a patch, been down and not able to even log on and play.. First time I was not able to play the game again at all <error 132> until I replaced my computer <which once again ran the game fine for months> ... Second time, the game disconnected immediately after logging on for 2 weeks.. Then miraculously started working again but w/ lag issues and latency problems.. Once again this would happen after months of working fine on the same computer..
Biggest reason I am liking Vanguard and will be playing it on release is the content they are offering.. Individualism of characters <yes, they need some more things like hairstyles but they are coming>.. Housing in the world I'm playing.. Player made villages.. customizeable mounts.. flying mounts.. Ships.. etc. etc. etc... This is what has me excited about Vanguard.. The virtual life aspect mixed with the excitement of adventure and exploration.. I am willing to believe Sigil that they will keep improving the game as it goes and I am enjoying my time in the open beta even with the problems that open beta may have.. Sigil has been more open and honest about there game <so far> than any other games that I have played.. Here's to Vanguard.. Give it a chance...
I to am looking forward to seeing WarHammer when it comes out.. But, by that time I'm not sure I'll be ready to leave my virtual life on Vanguard that I have planned..
So.. My 2 cents.. <ducks and hides>
Yeah but, their claim is that they have a "ground breaking game". If you call yourself ground breaking, and you end up serving old rotten food all over again, don't take your "surprised look" when people start ditching your game.
You're 100% right and it resume what i said: It's not that different, it's similar to the majority of MMO's so... Why even bother to buy it? Stay with the one you have now or wait for War or Aoc. Those will be "really" an evolution at least.
What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...
The original purpose of the post was to express my annoyance with people wanting a raw comparison, but since this turned into somewhat of a discussion...
1. 17GB download means most of your actual game is running client side so given appropriate setting / system specs the lag should be minimal - what we see in BETa is the ripples in the netcode, all runs realtively well for a specific period of time then the wave of lag hits, every form of interaction on game stops and server goes down.
2. Glassy and glossy poorly lit and washed out bump map texturing dont quite cut it for an online game - great for single player MMO but bad idea here
3. Crafting system is cool but requires some serious fine tuning - which I am sure they will do over the next 12 months. The crafting tables, tools, specialized tools and toolbelt, crafting clothes all leave at lot of room for play tweak, personalization that I think in the long would be neat. Vehicle production and customization are also a very cool feature - problem is getting there. The grind is about as incremental in difficulty as the levelling curve except you stand in the same spot more or less.
4. PvP - what PvP ?
5. Creatures comforts are all here from 2 generation of MMO's complete with housing, flying mounts and boats.
6. Class variety vs class path uniqueness - not really sure. Pet classes seem to get distinct advantage to dieing less than most.
7. Combat is more of a 1st generation MMO clicker fest as it stands
8. Character advancement - talk to people who got to 20-30, YOU HAVE TO GROUP to run dungeonsand YOU HAVE to run dungeons to get any exp - the pathing, LOS and repop timers are all off indoors so you lvling will become painful to impossible. I am betting DEVs are buying time with current exp curve so that the content/fixes will be going in as people need them to be able to play - and that becomes a carrot on a stick model we all learned to loathe. Mind you this is NOT new content I am all up for carrot on a stick there.
All of the above is just what I saw and experienced while playing open beta.
Honestly - give it another 6 months before retail and it will shine.

Ya, and most of your posts are defending Vanguard, your a man on a mission to get people to play a piece of crap game.I have two gigs of ram, 3200+ AMD, geforce 7800 GS 256MB, and guess what? Lowest or highest settings, the game looks like crap, and I have less than 30 FPS. Stop saying it is people's machines and start thinking outside your thick mindless Vanguard loving head.

that makes you a liar, run along
Hm, all who know my posts about VG know I am mostly sceptic about many things in VG.
BUT: The graphics are GREAT. Just standing there on one desert hilltop of Quali near that big port city (name??), seeing the endless desert, the high moutains and a HUGE named manitcore flying really high in the sky looking tiny like a bird in the distance, the sunset, the stars above in the night... Or Kojan, the area around Tanvu reminded me so to my several journeys to Japan, the rural areas. I could just stand there and endlessly gaze on the sight. (Only water is quite behind, even EQ2 water looks better, but maybe at high end machines water looks more realistic.)
I dont know what ppl talk about, also on the character models. When did you ever have so many things to make your character look like? Yeah, the first level animations are crappy, but later many get really cool ones, like the monk, real kicks and swirls. Magic is way behind ok, but it already takes SO much performance I guess they had to make simple spell particle system or none would be able to play it.
Seriously, I can understand people want a more highlighted graphics, less realism and more colorful. Thats a matter of taste, its a bit like in EQ2 much a brown-green mishmash. Some love that WoW bonbon colors, others dont, but you cant seriously say the VG graphics is bad! If everything else sukked in this game I would almost only play it see all the sights! (almost! not really)
EDIT: Oh and pls stop this tiresome "you are a troll" self-made-internet-police attitude. Maybe some people are a troll, but a REAL troll is a rare thing. Just telling about personal gripes and frustrations, wanting to share them, is not already trolling. It is trolling, when that is fake feeling, and just pretense to catch ppl. Expressing honestly how someone feels about something is never trolling. AND: the only REAL way to deal with trolling is ignore.
Who is the greater troll? The troll or the troll who trolls about trolling?

and there you go. verdict is in. Cleffy says the graphics are crap so what are we doing discussing this..

I guess I must see the graphics differently then everyone else due to my work on game models, textures, and UV Mapping; especially realistic graphics. The graphics in vanguard just look so lazily done and have thing wrong with them that I think about and fix before even showing it to other people to criticize. Alot of the things I point out are just basics to texturing or modeling as well. I am just wondering who actually did alot of the models since quite a few of them looked like a person who has worked with 3D for a week did them.
Graphic Criticism
My actual gripes with the graphics are in this thread. Its too long to post here.
I am not saying the game is all bad though. There are a few things I enjoyed, but they just aren't done yet to a degree they are playable. Also being an adventurer and leveling the combat side is a must in this game. I really wanted to solely do the diplomatic portions, but it gets cut off pretty soon and its difficult to make it to higher level area's for better diplomacy portions because the creatures levels and the bad level design.
