I just started playing Dungeon Runners and I have been following it for a while and was really psyched to play it.
I am really, really sorry to say I am disappointed in the game. it was not at all what I was expecting.
A lot of people have said that it falls somewhere in between Guild Wars and Diablo 2 but I fell the game is a step down from Diablo 2. I know the game wanted to be a MMO D2 but so far it really falls short.
If you don't mind it for what it is then you will have a good time. The production values are high and I did not mind the WOW parody cartoony looks at all.
The NPC voice dialogue is some of the funniest I've ever seen and almost worth playing alone.
Dungeon Runners is essentially a more linear, less RPG version of Diablo 2.
If you just want an arcade like hack and slash without all of Diablo 2's RPG elements then this is the game for you. You will Love this game, especially since it is free.
However, I am a long-time MMORPG player who has played all the greats and is currently playing Guild Wars. If you are used to playing MMORPGs and enjoy them a lot then Dungeon Runners is NOT the game for you.
I play Guild Wars, the most casual MMORPG there is and i was bored to tears by Dungeon Runners's repetitive hack and slash gameplay.
Comments
Dungeon Runners is so great because it is so simple.
Just run into the first dungeon and start hacking away. Its fun and because you are in your own dungeon, you can play the game as you like. Take it slow and explore or just a mad dash to find the entrance to the next level, its up to you.
I have never played Guild Wars or Diablo 2 so can't compare them to that. But I play Eve Online. Eve is as hard core as they get and I find the simplicity of Dungeon Runners a refreshing change. I don't have to worry about protecting my bit of space or fighting for resources. (Or cheating Devs)
Just me, my dungeon and my super sized sword.
Maybe we played different versions of Diablo 2 but....uh it is a Linear Hack n Slash game just like Dungeon Runners. The only difference is there's an epic story going on.
Dungeon Runners is definitly the lets just get a few friends and go hack stuff apart have a hilarious time doing it game. Thats what drew me in, something to do thats not all serious like the other games. GW, WOW, EQ, EQ1, etc etc they hall have some seriousnes to them unlike DR.
I knew right away from reading DR"s website before I got my invite it wasn't a real MMORPG its a Dungeon Crawl. Perhaps you just hyped yourself up to much that happens sometimes.
BTW GW isn't really that casual you still have to put time in if you want to get anywhere or get anything really good, but I agree if your looking for a really casual MMORPG then you won't find it here with DR. DR is a dungeon crawl / mmo parody.
I disagree if you like MMORPG's that you won't like this game, it is possible to like this game. I've been MMORPGing since UO launched, hell since Gemstone 3, its nice to have something really laid back, I can crawl a few levels of the dungeon with a friend, log out and come back pick up right on the floor I left off on. There's no pressure its just a good escape from the stress game!
Please Refer to Doom Cat with all conspiracies & evil corporation complaints. He'll give you the simple explination of..WE"RE ALL DOOMED!
My review
For those that dislike the game, this seems to be a common sentiment. My question is 'why did you expect it to be something different'? Is it because it's listed on MMMORPG.com that you thought it was a true MMO?
The hype-meter on mmorpg.com keeps wavering on this game. People either love it or immediately dismiss it. I really think that for this game to be successful, NCSoft needs to stop marketing it as an MMO. While the game is multiplayer online, it is hardly massive. The MMO title best belongs to games like WoW, EQ, Vanguard, etc... Additionally, there is the perception that the game is still in beta (mmorpg.com lists it as such and lots of new players received their invitations from those forums).
NCSoft needs to go on the offensive, market the hell out of this game and clear up the misconceptions of what it really is; a humorous, 3d, online multiplayer hack-n-slash dungeon crawler.

I like how they list it as an MMO because that gets it to people like me. I'm the hardcore raider guy... but I'm the funneh guy teeew. I was lead to believe that this is pure dungeon crawling, the raiding half of most games. When I found out it was more of a commical D2 I was plesantly surprised!
While I don't understand your reasons for not liking it (Sorry but the excuse it's not as much an RPG as Diablo II blows my mind. Maybe we should have said it's more of an RPG like Diablo 1??), I do have to agree with this one statement out of your review. This really isn't a game for people who want depth, character development, or plot.
This is different than games like, let's say, 9Dragons (this is just my own personal opinion)....a game that was trying to offer depth, story, and character development....but instead resulted in boring, automated combat, grindfests to even complete quests....and the same mobs in a slow, monotonous game.
This one is a click fest, the sheer fun of just slaughtering hordes upon hordes of critters with several clicks of the mouse.
And a funny script.
Yes, it still has some bugs being polished out....but love it for what it is: A casual game for people who aren't looking for something hardcore. I play this as well as Guild Wars; I don't even consider them on the same page. It's like the difference between Fable and old Diablo.
Just my opinion.
I'd say give it a shot again sometime, like in a month or two, with a different attitude. Make some friends on there or invite some buddies...see how far you can plow some night.
POST SCRIPT: If anyone was upset with my opinion of 9Dragons, I'm sorry. I am also willing to accept that it's still under open beta, and a lot can still be added to it. Any MMO may rise or fall at any time based on development progress and community.

It might be for Diablo fans, hack and slash fast packed, but heh not for me
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
So much better than some of the belligerent tripe I've seen. Thanks for being reasonable:)

Goddyfather, totally respect you for that. Wish more people would be willing to say "It just wasn't my thing."
than people that can't back up their reasons or just vex obscenities.
Presti and Godfather both had legitimate statements for why it wasn't for them (wanted more out of a game, more into the serious MMO's, whatever.)
People who post reviews that read something like this are not contributing their ideas, they're being silly immature kids:
ZOMG THIS GAME SUXX
GO PLAY WOW
IT HAS GUNS AND LVL 70
PVP IS AWESOME
LOL!!!1!!1!!!
^^ That's a bad review. And sadly, I've seen it for A LOT of games.
I also say a bad review could be read like this:
OMG
THIS GAME IS SOOOO COOL!
LIKE, LOTS OF STUFF TO DO IT'S THE BEST LOL!
So don't think I'm against negative comments towards a game.
I read lots of stupid appraisals too.
Regardless of the side taken, a good review gives a summary of the game. List the positives, list the negatives, and whatever your stance is give reasons why. I LOVE Dungeon Runners because I feel that since it's a game that doesn't take itself seriously, and is not designed to be an MMO in the same sense as WoW, GW, SRO or whatever....it comes out high in my books. It's a fun, frantic hack'n'slash to kill time in.
One of the most legit reasons for disliking it I've heard could be the bad framerate, the fact there's still lots to be worked on, the quests quit early in the game (lvl 100 Cap and I believe right now at the time of my writing they quit sometime after the 20's). I have faith in the developers because I can tell they're working hard to make everything stable and produce more content for the community...but I can see why people get turned off (hence I ask them to atleast try again in a few months).
Anyways, sorry if this has hijacked the thread any.
To the original poster, not a bad summary really. You gave an honest post. Some to Godfather.
And to anyone else wanting to know how to write a good review this sums it up pretty well:
