Since Elikal made a great well thoughtout post (it wasnt your usual fanboy "like a book" comments) like this on the vet section I had to also here. I am on day 21 of my 14 day vet trial. Yes I typed that correctly. When I first started I did the same old thing. The first week I jumped onto my old toon and ran around growing bored real quick. So I decided lets actually try to give this thing a chance again. So I made a new toon on a supposedly populated server. I picked Chilly server. Made a Bounty Hunter named Kinot and he is now level 26. So here is the reasons the NGE is wrong.
Quests - Specifically the Legacy quests. These things have got to be the most boring, mind numbing, repetitve pile of poop I have ever had to deal with. Its like going through the jedi grind all over again. I just want it to end. Not for some neat reward. Because they are so boring. Also they are still bugged as usual. Kinot is actually my third bounty hunter on Chilly in the past 2 weeks. The other two got bugged quests and I was advised by the powers that be to start again. A mod told me to start again. Sheesh. Talk about lasting power for a player. "Hey mod when I go to NPC B he tells me to talk to NPC A again and NPC A tells me to talk to NPC B. What do I do to fix this?" And the mod replies? "Make a new character" What is even sadder is that this was going on back when the legacy quests were first added. So at least SOE is consistent on not fixing things still.
But I will give them that they have changed things around. The pod racer chain actually did have a room full of pod racers. Pretty cool.
Old bugs new story - In the past 2 weeks I have taken around 40 bounty missions. And of those at least one quarter were bugged. Appearing in rocks, water, or not at all. In case you NGE fans dont get the importance of this bug. Its been around since the game was released. Also mobs are still warping. Another bug since the beginning. And what about the loot bug? Oh thats great too. Kill a mob click to loot and you get the "Your too far away" message. Stand on top and you still get it.
And I love staying in combat or going into combat when I am nowhere near anything. Just standing in a starport and I go into combat. Really great when your trying to travel somewhere and you cant because someone or something 10k meters away decides it wants to fight you. Oh and how come we cant shoot through objects but the NPCs sure as hell can? How about that range issue. We have to deal with it. They dont. Darkwalker Cave near Theed. Flew through there on my flash speeder and aggroed some mobs. They were still hitting me and doing damage when I was a good 800 meters away from them. And before people tell me its lag my ping is always 100 or less with no packet loss.
Population - Ok Chilly has people on it. I will give you fans that. But it is nowhere near the numbers of Pre-NGE. And the people I have met on the servers, not just Chilly, arent that friendly. Its become a soloist dream. Which leads to believe these people are going to be arse out of luck when the new patch hits. I have tried talking to the other players. Most just wont say anything. I have grouped with a total of 2 people. And I have offered many times to group. Most just walk away.
Gear - So crafters finally got some love huh? I doubt it seriously. Unless your an architect you aint getting any love. Seems everything including this new beastmaster system requires a structure crafter. As for weaponsmiths. Every piece of loot I get as a quest reward beats out anything a crafter can make and then some. I got an EE3 now that no crafted or dropped weapon can come even close too. And I have looked all over.
So you fans of the NGE can keep talking about how wonderful the NGE is but the sad fact is that SWG is a very piss poor Star Wars game that wants to be WoW.

Fair enough posting here if someone did the same on the Vet forum.
However, I can't help but think alot of what you posted was made up because it sounded good. NPC's shooting you from 800m away? Random agro? CSR's telling you to delete your character? All new to me in this post. Unless you're taking the piss out of the other guy who posted in the other forum...
I don't believe for one second that you know anything about SWG these days.
I miss the good ol' days when nerds were actually intelligent.
And yes the mod told me to delete a character because of a quest bug. Twice. First was in Mos Eisley. I had to go kill Tuskens near the city. After that I returned to the NPC and he told me to talk to the mayor. The mayor told me to talk to the other guy. Back and forth. I was told since its early I should just start over. Then I got up to White Thranta quests on the second character. When I was supposed to click on the personal computer of one of the guys in the compound it told me I wasnt interested in it. And again was told I should start over.
I was standing by the BH terminal in Keren looking for a bounty and all of a sudden I went into combat. But nothing was hitting me nor was I shooting at anything. Just had the icon next to my name glowing red and I was in combat stance. Happened again awhile later in Theed when I was up by the ship terminal to go to a player city to buy a small generic house. And again I went into combat.
As for all the issues and bugs I listed, I have said it before and I will say it again. Give me back my ranger and I would gladly come back. Bugs and all.
Kai
And your more then welcome to come talk to me on my character on chilly. Name is Kinot. Feel free to say hello. And after I finish decorating my small house I will give you the coords on here if you want to go check it out.
Sad thing is this game now offers zero challenge to me. The most challenging thing I have had? Trying to find the right floorplan house. That is about as challenging as it gets right now for me. Its easier now then it ever was with buffs and the best comp armor in Pre-CU. I have only been incapped maybe 5 times and not died yet. Pre-CU even with buffs and the best armor/weapons you could die in a heartbeat if you werent careful.
Kai
I play quite often and don't experience very many bugs, if any. Or lack of players. Or lack of content. Or lack of fun for that matter.
Maybe you are burned out of SWG and surly you know that the newness is gone forever. But I don't play for nostalgic reasons, I play because it's fun. I'm still making good memories!
A lot of good things are coming to SWG very soon. If you can approach SWG as a new player I think you might find it a lot of fun. Perhaps roll a new character and dive right in. Due to recent changes my fiance and I have made it our main MMO again.
With the upcoming Housing Purge it is going to feel fresh again. A perfect time to give this old Star Wars MMO another spin.
I miss the good ol' days when nerds were actually intelligent.
They shouldnt have done the legacy quests in this way. Or if anything give a profession xp for completion of a terminal mission. So a BH could get XP for completing a bounty besides the kill xp. Same for crafters etc. Wouldnt need to be alot either. 100 xp multiplied by the level of the mission. Granted its still a grind but at least it would give you other options. And that was what SWG used to be about. Other options. But now I feel so damn pigeon holed its nuts.
Another thing is different quest chains besides the legacy chain. Its all linear now. you go through one set then another then another. So you pretty much know whats coming next. That is boring.
Kai
I have actually been having a pretty good time and I played in the second part of beta to about a year or two after the launch. kind of did the off and on thing for a bit but just wasn't in to it much anymore.
I have looked at this game as a whole new game now.
My biggest issue with the game beside the quests they do have being the exact same thing over and over. Although I will admit I prefer it more than just camping mobs but terminal missions giving xp would be a great addition. I hate the aiming in the game. I really don't mind a FPS type game but not really so much in a MMO and that is only part of my issue with it. NPCs able to run through objects that I can't and some move faster than you can really aim at them. It is just kind of annoying and I hope they go back to an auto aim at some point. I guess you can say it takes more skill and maybe I am just low skilled.
I have yet to try PvP but I am only level 45 or 46 so not sure how that goes with the combat system. I have switched professions three times now. I went from Commando to Jedi to Bounty Hunter. I really just wanted a melee class and sadly jedi is really the only one. I know Smugglers get melee moves and maybe spy or officer does so may have to look into that. The main reason I have gone into BH in the end is I am curious how the bounty system works now as I hear everyone can get a bounty under the right circumstances. I have a lot to learn about the game again even with knowing some of the old game.
It really is just a different game now and I look at it that way. I do like you can still be an entertainer and crafter so you don't always have to be about combat. That is part of the main reason I went back to try it again.
And I am not a fan of SOE at all and I know many a people that say they will never give money to them again and I can respect that. I just feel no matter what I play I am giving my money to something evil whether that is Blizzard, EA, Turbine, SOE etc etc So I just play what I enjoy and keep an eye out for something I may enjoy more.
If you don't like the Legacy...why do it? You can make just as much XP by doing it the old way if that's what you prefer.
Also, to the other poster, if you don't like the FPS sytle combat you can make it play more like a typical MMO. Simply press Y and it will turn on auto-target lock, you can then double click your target and it'll automatically attack for you.
Now that being said I just completed the Borvo part of the droid quest. Going into his vault to get the 2nd chip. And it was fun. Killing droids instead of NPCs that do the same old thing is a nice change. Then coming around the corner and seeing a rancor standing there I almost choked on the milk I was drinking. Fighting that double gold elite 29 Aklay was also interesting. I still managed to solo it at 27. Which sucks. But it was fun. Why? Because it wasnt the same old boring shit over and over. That is the issue I have with this whole legacy thing. Parts of it are like torture to get through. And it shouldnt be that way.
This is one of the problems with SWG in general. Not just the NGE. It was also a problem Pre-NGE. The developers arent using the worlds they created for the content in alot of cases. They are throwing quickie things in there because they are either too lazy, incompetent, or just plain stupid. There is so many story ideas available out there and they still toss out the same old crap.
Here is what I would have done. First I would have allowed players to pick their starting planet. One of the three mains. Corellia, Naboo, or Tatooine. Then I would have put in a quest chain for each planet and each group. Start on Corellia? Maybe you want to join Corsec. How about helping a Corsec defect? Possibly you want to work for one of the criminal groups. Etc. With Tatooine you got Jabba, Valarian, Mos Eisley Police, etc to mess around with. Plus on each I would put in profession specific quest chains and faction specific. Why? So you dont feel so pigeon holed into it.
Anyway back to finding droid parts. I already forgot why I am gathering these droid pieces anyway.
Kai
Well and interesting post, and (maybe to your surprise) I dont even disagree with many points. You see, IMO those who claim NGE was wrong and those who say it was right are both right in some way. Like Obi-Wan said, many things are a matter of perspective.
SWG is not in the good shape it could be currently. Some quests are not terrible but not thriling either. Some are really good, but others are indeed mind numbing. The point is, you more proof my point as I see it. I was saying, NGE was SOE or Lucasarts trying to transform the game from the sandbox system to a streamlined quest based as EQ2, WOW and almost all other MMOs are. I know and admit it meant turning the backs to the vets. For the wishes of the vets is WAS/IS bad, no doubt. But as there is only "bad from your perspective", it wasnt generally bad. NGE was a failure in the sense that they did not accomplish their own goals. Why? Because they were not radical enough. They still wanted to preserve some of the old ways, and did not dare to make the step to a new model entirely.
Ppl now seek "things to do", as your entire report shows. Thats how most ppl today play MMOs. They want to go somewhere and want a task, a mission, a quest - interwoven with a story. SWG didnt have that before. We had a world and that was basically all. The idea of NGE to transform the game was right, because the expectation of new, younger players had changed, and now even most vet players prefer quests and things to do. It was just implemented very bad.
I will not go into the crafter VS loot debate, its AGES old and we get a new repeat of that story with EVERY MMO. Crafters want no good loot adventurers want good loot. It cant really be solved. I am no crafter, so I want cool loot, I dont want crafters to get uber rich, but thats just my personal good/bad compass, there is no objective good/bad.
IMO SWG just totally lacks the manpower. And maybe the will to really invest into it. They have their small handful of devs tinkering around, so I dont expect SOE ever does anything big for the game again, so we cant expect miracles. I stand for the statement, a game can and must adept, even if that means to loose features veterans loved. What NGE did overnight was nothing else than other games do over a longer period of time. UO and EQ1 didnt chance less, but ppl did not notice so much since it was over a longer period of time. It can not be doubted that the ascend of WOW which happend at that time for good or ill forever changed MMOs. Its not that you must like it, but a company is no welfare organization, they have to focus on a certain market. I still think SWG would have not much more players now if NGE never happend. It was in active player decline anyways. Much in NGE was bad, but it was the bad implementation mostly, not the bad idea. However, they really did a good job in the last year with the expertise trees and many other great things.
Making a change is necessary in MMOs. They did it in one move instead of over time. But to change a game you always loose things. You cant make omelett without breaking some eggs. Besides all that SWG still has a lot of interesting things I dont have in any other MMO and they are great fun.
Let me say this personally: I have great respect and sympathy for everyone who does hate NGE and felt he lost what he loved. But a person should not start a years lasting war against a company over some personal grief in something arbitrary like a computer game. That SOE bashing some ppl have made a habit of is just plain wrong and not justified. Ppl still keep inflamatory signatures against SOE, after all the time! For a friggin computer game! Sorry, I understand personal frustrations, but ppl nurture their hate and inflame others to it, and thats just plain out of hand and beyond my understanding. If you are angry, vent off and move on. Some ppl nurture and cultivate their SOE hate in a way thats just mental obsession.
People don't ask questions to get answers - they ask questions to show how smart they are. - Dogbert
I asked you this in the other thread. How can you say the NGE was right when the SWG devs say it was a mistake? Other game companies now use the NGE fiasco as learning tool of what not to do in an MMO.
Lets use an example I mentioned before. Say, for sake of arguement, that they announced a new expansion. This new expansion would be a new planet. Maybe Korriban. Also a few instanced zones like Bespin and Coruscent to get quests from and such. And while preparing this expansion they announce two new professions will be added a few months after the expansion. Plus to top it off a whole new crafting system that will certainly help crafters and looters alike. Sounds pretty good right? So you got the expansion and your playing it. There is all kinds of stuff for every profession. From quests to loot. Its great right? Plus you got the new professions later and the crafter revamp to chew on also right?
But the very next day AFTER the expansion goes live the bomb drops. They make a major announcement. All the professions are being eliminated save one. Jedi. And the jedi will split into sub professions. A tanker, healer, DPS, and buffer. Also the combat system will be changed from its current to a loading system where you click on the power then click on the NPC to launch the special. They say they are doing this because they used focus groups and found jedi the only profession that was popular and that the groups said the game was too hard. To top it off they say some of the focus groups never even heard of SWG. They also add they are doing this because they cant seem to figure out a way to balance out the professions and its to attract that younger crowd.
Now how would you feel about that? I know your thinking its a moot point because there is no way they would do something like that. Its completely illogical and would do serious damage to the game right? Well surprise! We thought the samething when the NGE was announced. That is what makes the NGE completely and totally wrong.
No matter how successful the NGE could have been it was still wrong. It could have attracted 1 million players and been a huge success but the way it was brought out made the whole thing wrong. Doesnt matter what they do now. Its still wrong completely 100%. You say they dont have enough developers right now. Know why? Because they pissed all over the vets and made the majority walk.
If they had come to us, 6 months before, and said "Hey we cant fix some of these issues. So we are going to cut away the parts we cant fix and try to come up with some new stuff, give us your input." Hell most of the vets would probably still be playing today.
So why do we do it? Why do we keep fighting SOE so much and going after them so hard? Several reasons. First is so they wont be dumb enough to do it again. The game definately isnt getting the numbers they want. Just like Pre-CU and Pre-NGE. If it wasnt for us you guys would probably be going through the above example right now. And second reason is because it has to be done. Your right its a game. But what if it was a car company? Or a movie company? Or a burger joint? There has to be someone to stand up and say "Oh hell no!" or these companies like SOE, Microshaft, Ford, etc will always do what they want and the consumer will constantly get bent over and rammed hard. If it wasnt for us Anti-NGEers shouting so loud, half the MMO companies would have screwed their communities over even worse by now.
So there it is in a nutshell. There are things in the NGE I like. If they had come to us and told us "This is what we are changing. What do you think?" then actually listened to us and used the good ideas, we would still be playing today. Probably even more players then before. But they didnt do it. So now they are getting a clack eye. Serves them right. Treat your community like crap and you get pooped on. So please dont blame us for their troubles. They brought all this shit on themselves. Enjoy your game. Let SOE suffer. Let them sort it out. Have fun with your game man. Dont worry about them. They deserve every bit of bad press they get. Eventually they will figure something out.

several quests are bugged, NPC shooting (and hitting) while you are behind a wall(?!), Tons of NPC stuck, sound is bugged since Chapter 5, POB engine graphic bug, Heals and cloaks mis-fire, etc etc... There is a lot to mention still and that in a 4 years old game..
Lack of (new) players still stands. On Tarq, most places besides (sometimes) Restuss and Mos Eisely are quite EMPTY. You'll be happy when you get to see 1-5 players in Theed or anywhere else..
Content is still lacking, its all old stuff and done a dozen times. Chapter 6 will, at the end ,only have one thing that makes the game more interesting again: Beast Master.
The upcoming house purge, while it may "refresh" the game, it will also give a devestating impression of how empty places really are
As example: a friend of mine will have to go look for players from other guilds and cities just to keep his city (metropolis ranked) up and running
Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.
No one is trying to convince you of anything on the Current forum. This is the Current forum afterall, if you were coming to this forum it's because you must have an interest in how the game is now and you should be expecting to see positive views on the game If you don't, then mayve the Veteran forum is more for you.
I'm not saying you shouldn't come here and post on this forum unless you've only got positive things to say, but don't come here and expect that people shouldn't be enjoying the game and posting about it.

I understand your points, and it is valid from a certain point of view. The entire way NGE was implemented, just out of the blue and all was undoubtly terrible. I lost all my professions. But ppl have to get over it. It was a GAME, and at least my life does not revolve around computer games as it were a religion. I was mad and then moved on. I only try to focus ppl on the other side of the coin. Thats all.

*As Obraik was saying, you have two ways to fight now - it's a simple choice;
a) you can use the kind of FPS hybrid and use the number pad to bust out specials, or
b) you can use the traditional MMO style to fight where you simple click on a target and then spam your hot bar as in any other MMO. You switch between this by using the "Y" key. It's a personal choice.
*Under Options un-check "Off Set Camera" to get rid of that crappy over-the-shoulder camera view.
*Under Options select Keymaps and under that use the drop down menu and select "Star Wars Galaxies Modern" to be able to use the mouse to drive your movement.
*You use the "Alt" key to get a free mouse look (as always).
*Use the right "Del" key (or the "." key) to turn off "Chase Camera."
*There are even Mod sites to give you much of the Pre-CU interface back, if you like. Personally I like the current interface set up how I described above.
Also, it's important to mention that the "hot spots" have changed.. being that everyone has a space ship no one needs to use the ticket collector anymore (unless you ship is in another city hanger). And buff lines are gone too - was unique but yeah, it needed to go.
Glad to hear your not stuck in the past like some Vets around here - if they would give it a fair try they might find SWG still has many good times to offer.
SWG is a worth Star Wars MMO once again and it's future is looking bright IMO.

Seriously, they'd have to stand behind their product no matter what to prevent the reversion train. It's actually easier and far less humiliating for them to say that they stand behind their product rather than admit that maybe their research wasn't as thorough as it should have been... not that they would've been able to say that in the first place, given that they were probably under NDA from the focus group coordinators. The stance makes them look resolute and dedicated which is exactly what they needed to do, else they would've pissed off many, many more people.
It's speculative, but I'd say a number of folks working over there disagreed with the NGE as well... not everyone stands behind every single change in the game.

I had heard about going back to the old way with some changes but didn't think it changed it as much. Thanks and I will definitely be looking in to this now
