...here so different than other MMO games?
Seriously.
Last night on Antonia Bayle was just bizarre. It was like being in some type of bizarro-Barrens. It's like the people are so freaking nice, and go so far out of their way to help people that it's almost sickening. It's really a nice change from WoW, LOTRO, and DAoC but it's just totally different from what I'm used to. Getting a universal "good night!" from people on a global channel is something I've never had before. I'm used to getting into arguments over the smallest things on channels for a single zone.
Is it simply because AB is RP-preferred and that crowd tends to be nice and more mature, or is it like that on all the servers?

Well on PVP servers, it's a little different. ooc and shout is mostly used for alerts, warnings or help requests. And since factions can't talk to each others in global chat, it's pretty clean and polite. But yeah, it's a nice change

"Hello"
"Good Morning"
Posts in chat...wild stuff...and yes...your right...it makes it seem like your all in the world together...compared to arguments or weird discussions of other MMO's...and how much separation there is in those worlds...
Makes me feel proud to call Norrath home!
Cheers!
I have an alt on AB (24 Necro) and my main (70 Monk) is on the Permafrost server. Perma isn't as nice as AB, but don't take that the wrong way as the Perma population is still unbelievably friendly and very helpful. AB is just freakishly friendly and helpful!

Its one of the reasons a lot of people play, myself included. If the community wasnt as good as it is im not sure i would be playing. It does make a difference to your experience of the game.
I've played on AB since launch.. well ok I have taken a few breaks (here and there).
The community is pretty good.. but what you described isn't always what you are going to find on AB.
On average tho.. its pretty good and people do try to be helpful/nice. I only have one guy on my ignore list..
and in DAoC I used to be thankful it had no limit.. I think most of my realm was on ignore and if it was open pk I would have gladly killed them. I tried other realms there and it was just as bad.
Anyway glad you have a nice experience.. it goes to show that even SOE can have a decent game when they try.
Well, I'm not going to lie - I did get into a little argument with someone in global because he called me an idiot for playing on an RP server when I didn't particularly want to RP. He seemed to be a lone wolf, and an exception to the community though.
Other than that, it's been fresh baked cookies, sunshine, rainbows, unicorns, and puppies. I'm still getting used to it.
EQ 2 is a great game with a great community. It really cannot get much better than that.

WoW and fast food = commercial successes.
I neither play WoW nor eat fast food.
I have dismissed it, and I think the person was from WoW. The reason is because all the people I know that really delve into roleplay freely and openly accept and respect those that do not.
I do not roleplay, but roleplayers can enhance the enjoyment of the game and immersion.

Plus no need to advertise that anyways...Just go along your merry way...as there will always be one or two who just dont get it...Relax, enjoy, smell the Norrathian air...and kill something..!
YEAH!
Smaller communities tends to be closer and nicer to each other (after all you're seeing the same familiar faces/names everyday) and RP communities tends to be nicer on average. But life isn't perfect but it's a lot more pleasant than most other mmorpgs.

yes ofc he was cus we all know only WoW has these type of people... just as many asshats in EQ2 as WoW, both games breed them and let them lose into the MMO world.

Well when I want to remember why I don't play WOW anymore... Even though my beloved ingame friends still do I check this forum out, wowforum. Sorry for being "stucked up" but uhm it's annoying and add to that it's supposed to be a cool thing to, it simply is not as fun as the poster thinks it would be...
I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.
"You have the right not to be killed"
There's no game that can beat the community here. I think its because most of us are older. Kids think EQ2 is boring and go to WoW, or one of its clones, instead of coming here.
Trust me, we prefer it that way. I've played this game almost since the day it opened and I've only seen leetspeak once.
Not to pick you out of the crowd (as others have made similar comments in this thread), and not to break up a bad thing here, but I need to get this off of my chest.
I really wish people would stop associating immaturity online with age and game of choice. My friends range from 15-19 years old, myself being 19, so the constant assertions that we must act like assholes online because of our age is mildly offensive. A large majority of the asshattery we see online comes from adults in the 21+ range, and being at it's worst in the 20-28 bracket.
The reason WoW seems like it has a "kiddie" community is not because of the age of the subscribers, rather it's because of the attitude and volume. Consider the following:
A)WoW has a considerably larger population than any MMO game currently in existence. Just as in real life, bad behaviour increases exponentially with population size. WoW only seems worse because the idiots are always louder than the mature ones, and because of the population, there are more of them, but generally no more than there are in other games in scale.
B)The community there is heavily competitive due to the large focus on PvP combat. This alone will attract a more "vocal" and rude crowd, as you can see with any game (including this one!) when there is heavy PvP combat involved. Competition brings out the worst in people.
C)It attracts a more casual crowd, or crowds that have never played MMORPG games, which leads to a bizarre fusion of non-MMO multiplayer etiquette and MMO etiquette. This tends to come off as harsh and primitive to most of us that have played strictly MMO games for a long time.
D)The community here may seem more mature but that maturity doesn't necessarily equal age. What people fail to realise is that maturity and age aren't always synonyms. They don't always go hand-in-hand. They can. but they don't all the time, especially when it comes to situations like these.
Anyway, my point here is this - the next time you come across that jerkoff in-game that causes you a problem remember these two things:
1)There are games other than WoW out there.
and
2)There's a good chance that guy behind the keyboard mocking you is a 26 year old, even though he may be acting like a 12 year old.
Please consider the fact that the younger crowd (12-19) is generally more mature than the older crowd. At any rate, there's a significantly lower amount of 12-19 year olds playing online games, let alone pay to play online games, which are dominated by adults in the 21+ age bracket.
We may be naive and ask stupid questions, and we may not be the greatest at playing the game (evidenced mostly in the 12-15 crowd), but most of us don't take pleasure in acting like assholes online.
I play in Lucan DLere and is AMAZING. I am loving the game more and more.
The community (at least for me) is just out of this world. I compare it to Ryzom.
Well, on Runnyeye if someone says goodnight in the chat (world channel, level-channel etc) many wishes said person goodnight. Or good morning when that is appropiate
So it's not just on AB
Now i would love to know how you figure out someones age to have it so precise??? Your staring at a toon on a screen, how does that tell you someones age?
Why dont we just say some people act childish, 15 or 50, doesnt matter we have no way of knowing their true age so why do people insist on assuming how old people are.
While I'm getting somewhat bored with the game, the community is what keeps me rolling alts and play here and there. On AB, I needed to kill Drull, and within 5 minutes of lfg, I have a full group helping me out and we were done in 5 minutes. Try lfg in Lotro (I'm a lifetime member, though don't play anymore), and you can sit there for hours on end. EQ2 community rocks!
i play on nektulos..smaller community, not as large as AB...but alot of people from Valcyn server (SWG) went there, and i love the community.....random buffs, conversations, laughs....having a great time.
I was in the enchanted lands the other night, mining some ore to help my Weaponsmith, when someone came up to me and said "Hey you a weaponsmith?". I said yeah, but am still grinding, am only a level 38. He then proceeded to trade me 3 feysteels which go for about 30g each. I asked "well how much you want for it?" since i just started the game, and had maybe 1-2plat, couldn't really afford to buy all 3 from him. He said, and i quote " Nah take it, I would rather give someone, especially someone new, these items then make some gold"
I was totally taken back by it, and thanked him profusely
In fact, there are times when I've even come on here just to thank the other players for being so kind. I've even made a thread for it. And I've even broadcasted a thank you to the very coolness of the other players over the /ooc channel on mistmoore (the server I play on).

Exactly right Flem, the OP fell into the pattern of the very people he was talking about by stereotyping another age bracket while complaining about people stereotyping his.No signature, I don't have a pen
