Asheron's Call, launched on Nov 2, 1999 pushes forward with the extreme competition of huge fantasy mmos in todays age.
Still one of the best mmos ever created in my opinion, one would have a very hard time finding an mmo with more depth and content then Asheron's Call. It's no surprise that a game where the developers continue to add new content almost every month still pushes on.
Anyhow, my bow of respect to my favorite mmo of all time just for seeing 2008 with money still coming into it, regardless of how few players still play. Numbers of subscribers have little to do with quality anyhow, so the numbers fail in the worst to show the quality, the depth, the heart & soul that still beats in the world of Asheron Calls' Dereth.
May this be just the beginning for what is to come for Asheron's Call and cheers!

Amen to that. AC was my first mmorpg experience and to my mind still one of the best.

Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

The Life expectancy of MMORPGs is still quite unknown. Games like AC, EQ1, UO, DAOC will define it ..and all 4 to date are holding their own.
Grats AC

Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)

They better upgrade graphics on this one
I agree that new graphics would probably bring back players and perhaps add a lot of new players.
But at what cost? If new graphics meant that I couldn't log in, run to one of the literally hundreds of dungeons and get swarmed by mobs in a relentless fury of action, then "no thanks" to that graphics upgrade.
Asheron's Call is still a great game despite its aging graphics. The graphics at maximum settings these days are actually not that bad to be honest.
Fun, content, and gameplay > Graphics. Any day.

I might resub to play it again. I know my old MS Zone account is gone, but what the hey...
I wonder if they will ever revamp the graphics quality of the game.
I tried AC twice. I knew the game had a great community, great content, etc.
I just couldn't get into it. I couldn't find the point to it.
If they overhauled it, not even graphically, but overall, I may give it another (3rd) try.
Nonetheless, Congrats!

Hey bud.. honestly not trying to insult you.. but when you say that if they overhauled it, I really hope that you don't mean overhaul it as in "make it more like WoW" ;-) Hehe.
.. But yes I can certainly understand that a game like Asheron's Call is not for everyone or for the majority of people. If it was, it would have many more players today then it has!

I did it. Its on their website. Its gonna cost you 19.99 to reactivate it though, no way around that.

That's not the hard part for me: I can't remember the login name.

Look on the AC website and call their customer service number. They can find out your log in name etc just from player names and even your email address I think. Worth a shot if you really want to play again.

I popped my mmo cherry with it as well. And I totally agree, it's a classic!
AC made me dislike every other MMO I've played to date.
Cheers to AC for its greatness.
Ah, Asheron's Call.
My first MMORPG. There are times when I miss the Lugians, Tumerocks, and evolving storyline. I still chat with my friends about how well AC made you feel part of the story...
Still haven't found a game to match the excitement I felt when playing AC.

I couldn't either. If you have the full name of your character and server thats all they need. The more character names on the account, the better.
I still think this is the best MMORPG I have ever played. Back then I thought the graphics where lacking compared to EQ, but its fun factor was something I just really haven't experienced in any other game since. I thought it had some of the best quests.
The SOLL (sword of lost light) was the quest to be had and you had to know about it very early on to collect the keys from the level dungeons or you were just SOL when it came time to venture far west to get the SOLL. And I loved that dungeon! Getting in there and grabbing that sword felt epic to me. I'm sure it is nothing compared to today.
That frost dungeon which the name escapes me at the moment was a lot of fun as well. Anyways at the end is his coffin and bunch of memorials beside it. I think you got a robe out of it?
Also the Green Mire Grave. I remember going there because my fighter friends wanted the BP and weapon from there.
Who can forget the mad rush to get a Gertarh's Dagger before they took them out of game?
I wish Turbine would look at all the things AC did and still does and put that into their next project whatever that may be.

Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate.
The amount of dungeons and crap to do in AC is staggering even 5 years ago when I quit.
One thing I always hated was..........acid pits. G*d damn jumping over those f*cking acid pits....the source of a few very embarrassing moments lol. 6 people all casting heal while I collected my stuff from my corpse
I also remember doing the "map of Dereth" quest (were you get the picture to hang in your house) and falling off those suspended platforms in the sky cause you needed to jump and move or something....and if you missed you fell into the forest below....corpse run...
And who can forget the Lugian citadel or portal storms in Qual? What about the rolling "balls of doom"?
Those were the days!
lol, Rolling Balls of Doom. I played on Darktide and trust me those Rolling Balls of Doom were the least of your worries in that little space, with little places to stand. Of course there was nothing funnier than when I dragged a melee into a ball with me. He didn't find it funny though based upon the tells I received.

Aye, first MMO experience and so far non compare.
The only thing i wish they would do with AC is revamp its core mechanics. Although it is the best so far, the PVP has so many bugs in it (which is why g4tv rated it so low) that it gets more frustrating than playing an FPS.
Still held onto me for 4+ years.
Asherons was my first MMO as well. And just like others have said it is my all time favorite. Nothing has come close to it.
So many good times....hunting Olthoi Nobles for loot...running to Teth..The shadow wars. Corpse runs for friends lasting most of the night. ahh good times.
When I first logged in, I did the tutorial and I did fine; but once in the world, I had no idea what to do, where to go, and other things of that sort.
Nonetheless, I enjoyed my experience but it wasn't enough to keep me.
Blessings,

I was happy playing classic EQ for it's first 4 years of launch so I missed the heyday of AC. I did try it a ways back via the free trial and liked the game but was turned off by the extremely low population and quit playing. I can't understand why they don't combine their many servers into one or two in order to create a healthier population.
Horizons actually did it and it took them months to actually do it and about a year of planning. SWG needs to do it, 20 servers was always to many. AC has needed to do it for years as has DAoC....once a game like that starts to loose subs, having non-instanced housing just compounds the problem. EQII pretty easily combined servers for that reason a few years back. One of the advantages of instancing housing IMHO. Not many players like to look forward to the day when their games pops start dropping and how that will effect everything.
Hate to tell you, but AC without the 'bugs', and PvP would be nonexistant. AC was not made for PvP while standing still and not moving. Xplay did one of the worst reviews of the game that I have -ever- seen, because they clearly didn't try it. They honestly made it sound like they didn't play past level 10, if that. And no offense to them (actually, complete offense meant) but they give some of the worst and most biased reviews of games I have ever seen.
Back to the PvP thing though.. it simply would NOT work if you could not manipulate the mechanics of the game like you could. It would be the most boring thing -ever-.. standing still casting spells at someone with nothing except character template and attributes to govern who won and who lost. If you were bad at it, fine.. but don't say that it needs to be changed just because you couldn't do what other people could. For those who knew even the smallest bit of how to work with the mechanics, (which was a lot of people) it was some of the most amazing PvP ever which I have yet to find in any MMO that I've played.
That said, there were many things that -were- and still are wrong with the game. The fact that Turbine ignored macroing and XP chains for so long is what ruined the game. They never should have allowed the game to be that easy, or for people these days to be able to level so quickly. It created too much imbalance when it began, and it is the reason the game is suffering now. It's alive, but it is barely holding on. Had they addressed the macroing and XP chain problem as soon as it existed, I have a feeling this game would still be going strong. It was awesome when a high level was considered someone in their 70s or 80s, and if you saw anyone higher than that you were just in awe. Level 90s and people in their 100s were revered.
Those were the truly good days in the game.. before people managed to basically cheat or exploit the system so that they could level as fast as possible.
AC was great. I hope someday we see something similar.
From what I read Turbine posts on forums, I got the impression that M$ forced them to ignore macroing and XP chains. I agree they were the biggest problems the game had. I was a member of a wonderful monarchy which didn't have XP chains and obviously didn't allow any macroing, IIRC not even buff- or portal-bots near the mansion. Damn it was wonderful time, even if we were a dying species.
