I haven't played WoW in a little over to years, but I am going to start playing on my kid account and my biggest concern is, oddly enough, have all the good names been taken? Is there still room for creative names or am I going to have to use something like Tom7565? Just thought I would check before I start.

That would depend on what you would consider a good name. I've not had any problems creating new alts and getting the names I want.
That is the issue when naming a character I try to use names that are creative but not just a jumble of letters without vowels. For example I like Sturmghwer as a name, I haven't seen anyone else with this name but with 8 billion people playing...... What is one of the east coast realms with a low to middle population? Not just for the name thing, which in hind sight is a bit crazy, but also so I can have plenty of room to move around and feel like the wilderness is still the wilderness.
Heh, that is a big problem with WoW now. IM surprised that WoW never instituted surnames to alleviate some of this problem.
However it does appear that the name "IamStupid58" is still available...but only on Lothar.

Someone recently recommended a WoW census website to me in thread I made asking for advice on a decent server. I've at the very least found it extremely interesting to read over and see the various stats, and it has given me some ideas for server choices (though sadly a few are PvP, may just have to take the dive). I just picked up the game myself or I'd try to give a direct suggestion.
Anyway, the link: www.warcraftrealms.com/realmstats.php
That link takes you to a realm overview with timezones and such, but it also has a lot more detailed information if you look at specific servers. One caveat though, the data seems to be mostly (if not entirely) user submitted using a UI plugin/mod.
Hope it helps.

Just a suggestion that you could look up a name you would like to use on the armory to see if it's taken. I don't know if the armory has all the names of characters on cancelled accounts or just active accounts, but at least you would know the name is definately already taken if it's in the armory.
No Sturmghwer's in the Armory at least.
another limitation with the armory is that it only lists characters over lvl 10 and I imagine a lot of people have bank alts under lvl 10 that are also name reservers.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
if I were to kill a titan tomorrow and no CCP employees showed up to say grats I would petition it.
Waiting for: the next MMO that lets me make this macro
if hp < 30 then CastSpell("heal") SpellTargetUnit("player") else CastSpell("smite") end
I wasn't aware numbers could be used in WoW names....
/sarcasm off
Thanx for the advice guys, I will check out the sources you provided.
There are plenty of names available. Yes - there are lots of players overall, but there are only a few thousand on each server. So just go to the character creation screen with 3-4 vaguely original names in mind. At least one of them is bound to work.

if it helps,
I look at this directory of names to get ideas or plain use them
