COH Washout!

HelixwolfHelixwolf Member Posts: 345

Thought I'd run this question by everyone in COH:

Do you think once WoW and EQ2 come out that alot of people will leave COH? (Leaving COH for WoW when it comes out! image )

Wars may end, but war itself will never end!

I didn't like EQ. So, I wouldn't be looking forward to EQ2. I'm not sure about WoW. I'll wait and see. I'm playing CoH because it's CoH and not something holding me over till something else comes out. For those that are thinking about doing that, I would recommend not doing it.

No doubt about it, once WoW and EQII come out, people will abandon CoH in droves.

I played it around the clock for the first month and then off and on again for a couple more weeks before cancelling my account. Being a superhero is cool and all but there is nothing to do in that game except grind.

I am willing to bet money that when City of Villians is released and PvP is introduced, the game will receive a renewed interest. However, who knows how long that will last without anything else to occupy one's time other than grinding out the levels?

I agree that once WOW, EQ2 and GW all come out a lot of people might leave CoH. But since I don't know how many people are currently playing that game it's hard to make a guess.  Though I agree that the City of Villains expanion might encourage many of them to come back.  I know I for one will be leaving CoH once WOW comes out, and possibly before.  It's fun, but it's really becoming quite a bit of a grind, and a number of my friends have left cause they got bored.

A game that I suspect might really die once the Big Three come out though is Lineage 2.

Statesman (one of the lead developers of CoH) stated that despite people's claims to the contrary, there are a surprising number of subscriptions to CoH right now. He alluded to that being a very high number but wouldn't give specifics just yet, stating that he'll release them soon.

I wouldn't be surprised if 100,000+ people have subscribed to CoH for purely the fun factor alone but I bet that number will be a far lower six months after release.

Don't get me wrong, it's a fun game for awhile but it quickly peters out. I wish the best of luck to Cryptic Studios in making it a more enjoyable experience - especially at the high end - because it has a lot of potential.

I feel and have acted in exactly the same manner. I was terribly excited when CoH came out and I played it like crazy for a month before extreme numbing boredom set in. There is NOTHING to coh except leveling. Everyone will eventually feel the same way as it is unavoidable. CoH is so poorly designed that only its great eye candy can attract customers.

WoW and EQ2 will steal its entire population. Do you realize how many CoH players openly state "I play CoH as something to do until WoW comes out"

  • imfuriousimfurious Member Posts: 13

"I'll just play this game to tide me over until WoW comes out..."

This was the argument I made as I plunked down $50 for CoH and opened an account with NCSoft for $15 a month. Too bad this logic didn't get me anywhere near WoW's release ::::06::

Oh well, I may check back in from time to time to see if that argument still holds water. After all, Q4 2004 (the commonly accepted timeframe for WoW's release) is still a long way off.

If you take 99% of the post on 99% of the MMORPG forums out there then _everyone_ will be leaving for WOW

Personally I couldnt care less, games are better off without the GIGs (grass is greener) syndrome players anyway - I just hope that all these people set on WOW arent totally bummed out when it's released because its not the game _they_ wanted it to be (because we've never seen THAT happen before have we?????)

The people that are still playing COH when WOW come out may try out WOW but I doubt many will leave.  COH makes certain parts of MMORPG so much more fun that it will be hard to go back to a game like WOW for many people.

I will probably check out WOW and it will probably come down to how long the treadmill is in WOW and the quality of PVP in both games and the quality of combat in WOW.

You're probably right, but I do think there's a lot of people playing CoH who otherwise wouldn't play a MMORPG. It attracts casual gamers. There is no medieval/fantasy setting; there is no "hailing" (fancy talk for saying, "Hi,"). It appeals to a broader audience, IMO. Of course you won't hear from these people on a forum. But they're there.

I don't think everyone will leave CoH when other MMORPGs are released, but certainly some will, it's the case with every game. I think CoH fills a specific MMORPG niche, and because of this it's going to stay there for a long time until a serious competitor enters the field (which is a good thing, because in the past I've noticed competition only helps MMORPGs).

Even though I am really excited about the release of WoW, I think that I will still play CoH. Its a great and fun game and I think that it will be even better when CoV comes out!

I bet many will just keep their CoH subscription even though they are trying out others. CoH is a game where you can get to the action in a matter of minutes so some people who don't want to do any messing around will pop into CoH to get ther combat fix fast.

About not recommending it to hold someone over? Because if they are looking forward to EQ2 or WoW, then they probably have a different taste for MMORPGs than the typical CoH player would have.

BTW, Guild Wars is pretty much Diablo 2-ish, which isn't a bad thing. Even with their limited play demo last month, it seemed like it could be fun.

I will be leaving CoH for WoW as well.

It may be a case of the "grass in always greener" syndrome but CoH has just become so boring. I would be level 40 now but I started a second character to relieve the boredom of one character(something I've never had to do before), I've cut my nightly playtime by almost in half and I've taken time off from playing for a week twice now(also something I'ver never done before).

With the release of EQ2 and WoW subscription for CoH will fall off. Not only because of people playing CoH as a stop gap but the people who just can't play it anymore after 6 months. I do not regret purchasing CoH but I have been looking at other sooner alternatives than WoW. In fact, Lineage 2 has started to look good(shiver).

I would not consider EQ2 to have an established player base just because of the original title.  Asheron's Call 2 almost has an entirely exclusive player base from the original, and it hurt because the original AC players were the most familiar with the unique story.  Now, AC2 had a rocky start and that scared alot of people off, but the "love" just wasn't there for many players (who still play original AC btw).  That's MMOs for ya, love it or leave it.  That is why WoW WILL be a successful game despite whatever ups and downs: people love and trust Blizzard and people adore Warcraft.

I've been playing CoH for just around a month now and all I can say is I love it. The game is so much fun still. I mean the game is becoming a grind but don't all RPG's become a grind eventually. I love the combat in Coh and that's what I tend to do in most MMORPG's is combat. Most of my SG has either never even played an MMORPG before or has quit other because they love the combat of CoH. So I seriously doubt that the amount of people that are playing CoH waiting for WoW to come out is that large. I'm interested in WoW but honestly I'm gonna wait and see with that title. I hated SWG because it became a grindfest with little to no content. I mean i mostly did combat and that game sucked for that IMO. CoH is appealing to a totally different crowd and not gonna have any problems when these new games come out.

Many others have expressed this same view.  What do YOU think that EQ2 or WOW (or any other upcoming MMORPG) is going to offer BESIDES the same grind to level by killing mobs?  I am very curious to see what you have to say so please don't just blow this off.
