i am very suprised to see this subject still active.  and i am cirious, how old are you //\//\oo, i think that you either dont know what is going on because you are too old, or you your self were sheltered as a child.

i'de like to comment on the subject of:

"Also the lack of palpable role-models for kids and the decrease in adult-responsibilities have almost isolated kids from the real world until they hit college (or, more precisely, their first internship)."

this couldnt be more untrue if you tried harder.  and i am amazed at the ignorence i see in the adults of today.

first of all, i would like you to know that i am 18, and i reached that age in april.  i will be off to college as soon as fall comes.  i am curently living with a friend, away from, who i have known for about 5 years that i have known online, and in real life.  i have never had a role model, and i have always pretty much kept to myself, except for a few people that i consider life long friends.  also i have lived with my mom up until my 18th birthday, and after that i proptly moved out.

i would like to inform you that i have infact been to the outside world, and i have seen what it has to offer.  i like the outside world, and i plan on staying there, not being all couped up until college, or my first internship.

i think that your response on this subject was not thought out, and uninformed.  apperantly you are haveing a difficult time looking past your own computer screen and seeing the outside world your self.

please, when you read this, i would like you to visit a foster home, or maybe a boarding school, where young people have never had a role model, and see how good they are doing.  because of their lack of trust for people, they have become stronger.

also, if you have children your self, i hope that they wont be as choked to the real world that you were.

    Munki,

It worked for you. But it doesn't work for others.

Children are preyed upon by pedophiles and others. There is also a plethora of information on many things that are beyond the comprehension of most people, let alone an impressionable adolescent. Parents who allow their children to roam free on the internet are gambling that their child doesn't encounter an exprience he/she cannot handle, and the reality is that there are a ton of encounters out there that adolescents cannot handle.

I'm all for live and let live, but we live in a world where children have special rules...because they are simply not capable of the wisdom and self-control necessary to know how to maneuver down the dark allies of life.

    Im with this partially,
I agree that many kids when left to roam the internet freely might have problems, but I bring it back to my firm belief that if the parent did a good job of talking to their child, the problems would be avoided.

Kids listen, if they trust you, they will do what you say.
Most kids who are prayed on my pidophiles arent rebeling, they are in there young teens/ pre-teens. They havent gotten to a stage where they will do things just to angre there parents (or atleast some kids >.<)

Although I see your Point, and it makes sense, but I feal that is what needs to be done only if you never talk to your child, or if your relying on those TV ads about the girl getting abducted.

Too many parents dont talk to there kids these days, and I stand firm that that is hte problem.
