GameAlmighty Preview

Just read the newest preview on gamealmighty.com. Combined with reading some other previews.. i'd have to say my excitement for this game has dropped dramatically. I did play it for a short while during one of the stress tests and thought it was decent.. but not excellent.  Looks like i'll have to look for another MMO :(

It's your call really but playing the final product for one month won't hurt you if you're into this kind of MMOs. Sometimes betas can be deceiving. If you thought the game was really bad in the beta, I doubt you'll change your mind in the released version but if you're undecided, maybe it's worth checking.

Very unfair review being he never experienced the port combat or realm vs realm pvp. Being that IS the focus of the game for the most part. Everything he reviewed just leads up to that..

It's like reading a book but never reading the climax or ending and trying to give a review...lol

"After five years of development, I can't help but be very disappointed with the finished product."

Pretty much matched my response exactly.

Now, if that were really true, why would you read, let alone respond to a thread entitled "GameAlmighty Preview".

Could it be, that if it was a glowing review, they'd be the BEST WEBSITE EVER?

I'd say that's a pretty fair review of the game.  It really shines in some places and is rather woeful in others.  Personally, I've found the game very engaging, the quest story lines are well written, the customization has alot of variety and its a genre I enjoy.  That being said, the things I look for in a game are the things Potbs does well, mostly the economy and its ties to the RvR aspects so others may not enjoy it as much as I do.  Calling the avatar combat "rough" would be kind and the UI is clunky as all hell.  It wouldn't take much to fix the UI, the avatar combat is frustrating, but it's a ship combat game.  FLS got the big picture right, but it does lack alot of polish.  I really want to see this game succeed and its worth taking a peek at, but its not gonna be for everyone.

  • miagisanmiagisan Member Posts: 5,156

actually several other websites (much bigger ones such as gamespot and gamespy) gave it mixed reviews, with it leaning to the good side.

Basically Ship combat = good, port battles = good, Economy = good but hard to get into, avatar combat = meh to subpar.....

so, would just like to reference that in with a game review of this never heard of company

Who the F*** is GameAlmighty anyways, just another critic website. Yeah, you may agree with what the critic said if your a hater, but how in the hell can you rate a game that is'nt even out yet. The G.D. game is still in Beta!!

This is what I hate about critics, even before the game is released on any game. All they do is dabble into BETA for a week and then give their comments.

Play the game when its released, come back give us your HONEST review after 1 month at least and then lets talk. At this point mr. or mrs. critic your just a regular joe smoe like the rest of us.

I would call out any game critic website and ask them these question personally...

The person you hired to rate this game, I got a few questions for them..

Was the critic part of a society or did he just play with himself.. hehe? Was the critic on a POS machine? Whats the critics past history when judging games, what other mmorpgs/fps has he critized? Whats the Critics age? Does the critic have kids at home or is he/she single/married?

How long have you been rating games? (Were you picked on at school? ok j/k here..)

All in all, a critic is just like you and I, but apparently this guy/gal gets paid for it and we don't.

They're going to have to do a lot of patching before I try this one out.  Just too many negative reviews to ignore.

Honestly, its a really good game with alot of really rough spots in it.  If you like the economic side of games, naval combat, and RvR then give it a go.  If you've watched alot of Errol Flynn movies and are a wannabe swashbuckler, wait a few patches.

Some of the comments are true, whilst others are downright bizarre.

The part about the clunky avatar combat=true, its very poorly done. The actual system itself is good, but the wooden puppet like stumbling as you fight is terrible. This would have been better as a pure hack and slash or as a strategic turn based affair.

The graphics poor?? hardly, the graphics are actually very good, unless theyve changed massively since beta. The worst part was the special everquest 2 style plastic water, but thats about it.I loved the way the actual avatars looked.

The quests seemed a little bland, but the sea combat, customisation and economic ideas were great. Never tried pvp or crafting so i cant comment, but if everythngs player made and theres no horrible rep grinds, raid crawls or have to get gear ,then its fine by me.

I might buy this at some point, but im going to keep an eye on it for the first month or so,dont want to get another tabula rasa on my hands where its all low level polish and nothing else.

I just can't buy gamespy as being trustworthy anymore.  Also never heard of gamealmighty, but it is a sharp looking website.

I won't bash the review as it's just someones opinion, just like the positive reviews are... but I am curious when the reviewer last played the game because the UI has changed since his screenshots and that was a while ago.

Look at the boarder around his chat window and compare to any of your screenshots.

Or did he just grab screenies off the web somewhere?

Frankly, I'd be buying into the G.A. preview a lot more than the warcry praise-fest.  That's hardly a review, that's just a fan glowing about their new toy.

p.s. Here's another "article" from the same "reporter" from Warcry regarding teh AoC delay:

"Big surprise, Age of Conan has been pushed back another 2 months until May 20th. I guess removing 2 entire classes and realizing that the game still had too much suck warranted the extra time. But of course, I have to rely on my army of beta monkeys to tell me the game has suck, since I've never been allowed to play it. I trust my monkeys, I really do."

Actually, as far as reviews go neither of those two were particularly good or bad...

... then again I am horribly jaded by years of terrible reviews causing me to buy games that were trainwrecks.

My current 'favourite' reviewer is Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw who does Zero Puctuation in The Escapist.

Honestly though, when it comes to purchasing, I usually wait for user reviews which is what brought me to this site.

    and Highplains?

Please stop using so many different fonts and text colours...

Your posts make me think of Layer Cake and I have had to stop reading them because they make me hungry...

and yet he was absolutely correct....read the AoC producer's letter and you will seethat the reason they are delaying it again is due to an incredible amount of bugs

Yeah, although I disagree with a lot of his reviews, I do find his style very entertaining :)

For instance. I absolutely love Tabula Rasa (dodges the thrown rotten fruit) and he seemed to have pretty well hated it, lol. But I cracked up (honest to goodness deep belly laughs) at his TR review :)

I'm reading the original review at GameAlmighty. here are some comments:

"Graphics are poor and not up to snuff" -- WTH does this mean? what is "snuff"?? I am running at 1920x1600 and the ship fights look FANTASTIC! The Avatars are adequate, similar to LoTRO. I would rather have seen something like "the lack of shaders, no anti-aliasing, etc, etc", instead of "not up to snuff".

"but Priates is a bit of a resource hog, demanding more than it returns" -- uh,  WHAT resources do you mean? memory? disk? graphics? network? I have it on two machines, and one is just has an old ATI 7900 graphics card. Runs fine! And how do you make the judgement on the returns?

avatar combat is lackluster -- i will agree here. Although the reviewer doesn't seem to realize that it was added later in the development cycle. However, once you train up some skills, get some better weapons, and develop a strategy, the avatar combat makes a nice change from the ship combat.

economy is good -- correct. A very well done and innovative economic system. Crafting is excellent, and almost everything that is good has to be player made. A great choice!

PvP not mentioned -- ?? this is one of the most fun parts of the game! In fact, perhaps the main point!!

Grouping not mentioned -- ?? the reviewer never got into a group? Never took on a fleet of NPC's with your group? Never went hunting?

The rest is just subjective verbiage. The screenshots all show beginner scenes: the ships have no modifications, the avatars have no skills. The game gets better when you actually advance and train up some skills. I see a lvl 1 Pirate ship with no skills. The avatar combat screenshot also shows a lvl 1 Pirate with no skills at all.

So, the reviewer never PvP'd, never grouped up, never trained avatar combat skills, never got a new ship, never upgraded his cannons, sails, or anything else.  Never levelled up? Sheesh, not much of a review.

Really?  You can actually defend a "reviewer" who would post something as unprofessional as:

""the game still had too much suck warranted the extra time. But of course, I have to rely on my army of beta monkeys to tell me the game has suck, since I've never been allowed to play it. I trust my monkeys, I really do."

More likely, since he had something good to say about your game he can do no wrong...

While some of the graphics are quite pretty, I think a case could be made that the lack of graphics...specifically re-using the exact same landscape for 90% of the land quests, reskinning the came city model over and over, etc....could be considered lackluster graphics.

As to system resources, considering the substantial memory leak that has affected MANY players, I think that's a fair gripe.

See, this makes sense! You point to actual real issues. My complaint is that the reviewer did not mention any detail like this.

    1) graphics -- I agree, it is weird that Tampa and St. John's are exactly the same. Every bush is identical! The graphics themselves are good, just the re-use is a little too much. My suggestion (made to FLS) is that there is no wind in the game. The water is flat, no whitecaps (I'm a sailor, and like to "read" the wind).

    2) memory leak -- I never saw this. The game has run fine on my new and my old machines. I do have an odd game crash every now and then (maybe once in 8hrs of playing), not sure if that is the memory leak.

Again, my complaint is with the reviewer -- they obviously didn't play much at all, and the comments are generic ("not up to snuff") as opposed to anything concrete. A poor review IMHO.

GAmeAlmighty are a bunch of muppets that never really made any usefull reviews. Seriously, it's always the view of one guy and not just a general technical breakdown of a game.

Sorry, GameAlmighty have yet to make a good review... They never stand in a neutral point, it's always a BASH this or Praise this... unprofessional.
