Most are typical "go kill x of y" or "go get an x from the evil y" or "find x and escort it to y" with little variation; some are chain missions with a little exposition but I doubt many people pay much attention to the text. Some missions are also "go kill the big and evil x, but we're not going to tell you where it is".

The instance missions are a bit more interesting as they present a mini storyline.

I would say the quest/ missions in TR are like most MMOs that have a questing system. Some of the missions are good some great, and some are just running and fetching for a NPC.

But I do like the Target of Opportunity mission. while it is basically a kill this many  X or visit Y area, it gives you a more of a reason to confront the enemy on the road instead of avoiding the odd fire fight  just to get somewhere to finish the quest.

""But Coyote, you could learn! You only prefer keyboard and mouse because that's all you've ever known!" You might say right before you hug a rainforest and walk in sandals to your drum circle where you're trying to raise group consciousness of ladybugs or whatever it is you dirty goddamn hippies do when you're not busy smoking pot and smelling bad."

in TR, there's four general types of missions:

    1) Generic world missions, which are mostly "kill X of Y", FedEx, Retreival, Escort, or Defend.

    2) Instance missions.  These actually tell a more-or-less cohesive story centering around that instance scenario.  Strangely satisfying to complete - kinda like finishing a good book/movie.  Usually give a good sense of having accomplished something - especially as instances change to reflect what you've done already until you leave the instance.

    3) "Story" missions - each world map has a overarching storyline that as a general rule takes you around the map and introduces you to things...example in Wilderness is the "Corman Plague" missions about finding a cure for a disease.  These can be multipart, too - the "Corman Plague" storyline's about 20 missions long (not counting sidequests).

    4) ToO missions - ToO stands for "Targets of Opportunity" and there's one in each zone.  This is a mission that you get from a questgiver in each starter base (map starter, that is - when you enter a zone there's a hospital that you "acquire" just by entering the zone for the first time - this questgiver is usually near that hospital).  The mission he gives you is very generic - " Look for opportunities to excel!" - and turns you loose.  The actual mission goals are revealed as you do things in the zones, examples being "Get all waypoints in a zone!" "Explore all caves!" "Kill 200 Thrax!" etc, etc.  Mostly the sub-missions relate to the overall stroyline of the zone, OR just involve mass killing of LOTS of enemies, with each accomplished goal giving you a title for your character.  Completing ALL ToO missions in a zone results in the "Master of <zone name>" title and a extra clone credit for that character.  Titles are selectable, and display below yoru character name on your character's tooltip.  They display to others, too - so they're a OK perk, if you're into such things.  You don't HAVE to have a title showing, either :)
