For some reason in the newbie town the game is pretty much unplayable framerate jumps and everything stutters every second.. but when I try my level 20 its not so bad framerate isnt great but playable... now no matter what i set my graphics settings to nothing changes my framerate.. I tried low and everything off and got the same fps with everything on high but shadows off.. i tried the turning 1 core off thing and that didnt work.. i have the newest drivers from ati...

my specs are

dfi lanparty ut nf4 ultra-d MB

opteron 2ghz running at 2.6ghz

X1800 clocked to higher than xt speeds

2gb gskill platinum ram

vista 64 ultimate

any suggestions?

I got an extra 2 gig but I can't tell you if it really made that big of a diff b/c people are saying last night patch really made a big difference.  Seeing how you have 64 windows why not go for the 4 gig mark.  The game runs great with very few shuttering in very high populated zones.  I find eq2 shutters more.  Anyway, my specs are

    amd 4600 x2  - ati 1950 pro - 4 gig @ 3.25 b/c I'm waiting for 64 os to come in the mail - 160 sata 300

I have it on low but I can run ok on med, just more lag spikes in heavy zones.  I'm planning on upgrading soon to a better graphics card but waiting for the next gens to roll in late this month.  From what I hear the ati 4870 can beat the 8800 on performance... we'll see if that is true later in the month.

been looking to get 2 more gig but almost no one makes ddr500 pc4000 ram anymore and the few i have found are outragouslly expensive.. strange thing is i can run eq2 with almost no lag at all in towns

oh right! now that Devacore mentioned that. I do remember reading that Vista takes up like 1.5 gig for it's operation alone, which would only leave you .5 gig for the game. They were recommending 4 gigs with vista. I saw that somewhere in the link I posted up there  ^

and the game runs fine on Windows XP btw

this is actually very big misconception with vista it doesnt not take 1.5gigs of ram to run.. it uses excess resources better than XP .. but when an application is launched that needs more it gives the needed ram to that app..  if you go into process manager when aoc is open you can see aoc using like 1.2 or so gigs of ram..

so just cause when nothing is running at its showing vista using 1.5 gigs of ram or whatever it uses on your system doesnt mean its robbing all the resources to run other apps

ouch, that totally sucks.  Like mordia said, I find all my programs running with less problems.  I remember alt-tabing normally meant death in eq2 but now I can alt - tab with zero problems.  Of course the problems you are having could be support problems e.i. drivers etc.  On the memory side, my local computer shop sells 1 gig ddr400 for 47 dollars which is just a lower speed then ddr500, unless I'm getting that wrong.  Anyway, I wouldn't think memory is the holy grail but if you always wanted to get memory why not.

cant use anything other than pc4000 unless i wanaa replace my ram all together.. i tried slower ram mixed with my current ram and it would not read the new ram at all. problem is with the MB it doesnt work well with differnt speeds of ram

I'm running AoC on vista x64.

AoC alone already takes 1,6Gb ram. You can forget it with 2 GB.
