Grats on 700,000 Closed Beta Applications Mythic! As far as I know this continues to be the most ever for a closed beta. If somebody has concrete closed beta numbers that have passed this before let me know!
Usually during the last two months before launch you'll see numbers jump because everyone's hoping to get a peek. I wouldn't be surprised if like most other MMOs it reaches the 1 million mark when it gets really really close to Launch. Its completely not a sign of anything at that point..but to have so many at this point in the waiting game is impressive.

I have very little interest in this game but I still applied for the beta... beta apps don't really mean anything, and you can count on at least 100k of those being from people that put in apps from different emails.

The same could be said for any game announcing their beta sign up numbers. Also, you were still interested enough to at least sign up so there is slight interest.
MMOs currently playing: - About to play: Lord of the Rings Online Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)
There will be an Open Beta but it isn't open to anyone who signs up. And we know it will be about a month before the game launches in the Fall which is September, October, or November. We also know the NDA will likely be dropped before the Open Beta starts as well.
not that its a bad thing, its a new way to test the game.. sounds interesting to me

This is incorrect as it is still an Open beta. Even AoC Open Beta wasn't open to every single person. Here is the Open Beta information quote right from Mythic:
Folks,
Few things:
1) We will have an Open Beta. People who buy the CE will be guaranteed a spot in the OB. As to how big the OB will be, well, that would be telling...
Sorry, I couldn't resist throwing in an old line from an even older TV series (one of my faves). I really don't know how big the OB will be at this point.
2) As to when, it's pretty safe to say that we are going to follow what has become conventional wisdom within the MMO community to have an OB about a month before launch. It certainly is possible we might extend it by a bit or even shrink it but no decision has been made yet. And since we haven't locked in a date yet other than to say Fall 2008...
3) Just to avoid some frequently asked questions:
a) No, you don't get to keep your characters from OB. After OB *all* toons get wiped.
b) The Head Start period happens after OB, length of HS also undetermined and yes you get to keep your toons/stuff from HS.
c) I expect the NDA will be lifted before OB. Hopefully quite a while before OB. As I've said for years, you can tell how much faith a developer has in its game by when the NDA is lifted.
d) We will not have all servers running during OB nor the HS. We will have all server types running during the HS though and probably for the OB but I'm not sure yet.
Games seem to be redefining the term open beta. AoC's open beta required you to pay for a fileplanet sub and was under NDA the entire time so go figure. A game this size could never accomodate an unlimited open beta but lifting the NDA is a positive sign.
Numbers don't mean much we all know that people sign up for beta with several e-mail accounts anyway. I'm sure that number will go well over a miliion before long.

Open Beta's that allowed everyone and their brother into the game usually caused ultimate screams of Fail. Games since WoW have been in most cases been using contests and subscription sights to give out the passes so they can control the numbers. AoC's beta didn't require you to pay..Fileplanet required you to pay there's a huge Difference.

It doesn't matter who collected the money they could have easily limited the amount of testers without charging people. The bigger issue was the NDA and the fact that the beta was limited to lvl 13 which is pretty much a big red sign that said this game is not finished and we are trying to keep it quiet.
I think the way they are handling it here makes alot more sense. It doesn't mean much in the long run but it's a good sign that they are at least going to let people see and hear about the game before it comes out.
Mythic has gone over this before. The Open beta won't be open in the sense that they aren't going to upload the beta client to Fileplanet and just hand out a key to whoever wants one. It will be open in the sense that a lot more people will be involved and their won't be an NDA.
WAR open beta means 3 things. 1. No NDA, it may be dropped before this but Open Beta wont be under NDA 2. Computer Requirements will be dropped meaning all those people complaining about winning a contest and not getting in closed beta can play 3. Limited number of spots available with CE preorders taking 60k of them, contest winners taking another chunk, previous testers another, and the rest being a random drawing.
Other open betas open up to everyone and their brother and is based on first come first serve. That is why WAR is not really an Open beta. There are still limits and people will be selected randomly.
I think Mythic and EA picked a great way to have an open beta.
They did hand out beta keys to for people to do whatever they want with them.
By keeping most of the Open Beta keys in the hands of people who bought the CE they are making a very wise business decision to make sell more CE's and keeping out the players that just want to try the game and don't really plan to buy it and "Fan Boys" of other games who are going to spend more time writing how bad the game is and how good their game is.
It also keeps more "Fan Boys" in the Beta which is going to give them better reviews most likely. (Just imo)

English isn't a language which is fixed or set in stone. It changes over time.
As I recall the beta tracker hit over 500,000 shortly after it started, so I would think that at least more than half of us who submitted an application will be celebrating their 1 year in line anniversary.
I think they included those in that number. Especially since mark also said that with the introduction of war in other regions they're expecting to pass the million mark.
So that would support that it's a global number rather than just US

That's an interesting thing to get all excited about....I don't think I've ever seen someone so proud and boastful of a game's beta application numbers before. I think you could be the #1 fanboi evAR! ( ' :

I'm half teasing you, but really?
Since AoC passed a million there isn't much truth to it anymore either ^^
Even then it's meaningless. The MMO world has simply changed and there's WAY more people looking out for MMO's these days. So even if it were highest ever it would be a result of what WoW did for the market, rather than something particular WAR has done so far. (except make their game look decently attractive of course)

I think the excitement comes from knowing that when the time comes, we'll be playing with plenty of people. Being a MMORPG, this means more teaming, more fun, and more RvR combat. I mean, the general public hasn't really experienced anything from WAR yet, except in a passive fashion. I really hope all those applications materialize in a whole of a bloody lot of subscriptions for me to play with and against

Maybe they can reach 800k by the time the closed beta is over.
Either way those are pretty awesome numbers.
STOP WHINING!

Open beta plus opening signups for the Asian market is going to make that counter sky-rocket.

It's Open Beta because it's not under the NDA, and thus you can openly talk about it.
Nah, Open Beta is just a word that gets thrown around regardlessly. NDA will be dropped before Open Beta begins.

So who else here besides me are about to tragically celebrate their "First Anniversary in Line for the Beta?"
As of 5/31, it'll be 1 year since I've signed up for the beta. Go Me!
As I recall the beta tracker hit over 500,000 shortly after it started, so I would think that at least more than half of us who submitted an application will be celebrating their 1 year in line anniversary.
Bare in mind those numbers are not including Europe (or at least I think since euro has its own beta signup)
I think they included those in that number. Especially since mark also said that with the introduction of war in other regions they're expecting to pass the million mark.
