reason: there is stuff you can do all the way up to the level cap solo if no groups going, all i can remember from eq1 (unless this has changed since i quit ) is sitting in pok lfging for endless hours only to log off angry
eq2 on the other hand I soloed to 80 and grouped when the chance came up, no sitting around doing nothing while waiting on one.
I've returned as well with the Living Legacy Promotion. I downloaded both games and I've decided to stick with EQII. EQI is more group oriented (mainly all radiers now) and since my character is not in a guild, not to mention my gear is very dated, getting into another guild simply to relive old times isn't worth it. Any guild will want certain qualifications none of which my char(s) would probably meet. There are a few Altguilds that would accept my character, but its not worth it just to access the Guild Hall or other niceties.
I have a few guild mates that are returning to EQ, but they are on a different server and I'm not even going to entertain the thought of starting from scratch (enjoyed that on the Combine). Our guild is fairly active in EQII and I don't mind starting over there as the game has changed and I'd like to experience what perhaps the game 'should' have been like on launch.

Sure, if I had been around back in the day, and played EQ, I would have loved it, and probably would be hailing it as the greatest game ever. But I wasn't, and now I have to judge it alongside more modern games. As such, I do not think there is a contest. To the new player, EQ is far too dated. The UI is very difficult to get used to, and the game is just too much of a drudge. I don't have any fond memories, as I wasn't there in the beginning, so I cannot forgive the out-dated system, no matter how great it used to be.
On the other hand, EQ2 is a gorgeous game, with a great community (at least in the EU ones, don't know about NA). It has something for every type of player. You can solo if you want, or play as a group. You can play casually, and also as a hardcore enthusiast. The world is vast, with loads of extra content. There are fun things to discover wherever you go. The characters actually speak, which I think adds to the feeling of immersion 100 percent. I don't just mean the odd comment here or there, but nearly everything a NPC says, is actually said!
I would give both a try. However, if you have never played either, I bet you any money that you will prefer EQ2.
Everquest 2 I'd say. It isn't Everquest, but Everquest is pretty dated these days and the vision which appealled many has long gone. There is a trial of it though if you wanted to try it.

I really think that EverQuest on a new engine, with unison, modern graphics would be a big competitor in the MMO business. But that's more than likely too big of a chance for a business like SOE to take.

I dream of that too but I don't think SoE would have the vision to make it, nor am I sure it would be that successful. There are quite a few mmos on the way, might be a bit saturated.
If you don't mind Facades and rapid leveling, then go for EQ2. I personally hate Facades. I like to be able to explore that pretty castle; not just look at the damn thing from the outside.
If you prefer immersive worlds that you can explore, go for EQ1. WAIT. Maybe not. Last time I played EQ, I believe the Trend IS going in the same way...pretty facades and inaccessible areas. Someone with more recent EQ1 experience, please chime in here.
Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon. In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit
LOL....It took 13 posts for a SOE hate filled post? SOE's rep must be getting better! As for which game is better......That is pretty much up to you. Try them both and see which one you like best. EQ2 has prettier graphics and is more soloable. EQ1 has a much deeper world and is much more immersive but has less players due to it's age. Both are very enjoyable games however.

If you like grouping and eventually raiding, EQ1.
If you like soloing and sometimes grouping, EQ2.
Many more distinctions between them, but I think that covers the biggest difference.
for me eq2>>eq1

To me there is no contest.
EQ2 by a long way.

What about Vanguard ? SCNR

LOTRO is the best PVE game out right now. Avoid anything SOE, you're only setting yourself up for a major headache later. They hate gamers.
Mark my words, give SOE a few years and they are bound to screw you over.
