Multiplayer Online Game is a multiplayer video game which can be played via a game server over the internet, with other players around the world. Some prominent examples of this are Battlefield 2, Counter-Strike, Warcraft 3, Starcraft, and Call of Duty 4.
These games differ from MMORPGs in that they do not create a persistent world, but create a playing arena for the purpose of a single game or round. In other words, they rely on a game server used only for that round, and there can be numerous servers all around the world. MMORPGs on the other hand, rely on dedicated servers, as these games must be running continuously.
Playing: Everthing Played: DAoC,AC2,EvE,SWG,WAR,MXO,CoX,EQ2,L2,LOTRO,SB,UO,WoW. I have played every MMO that has ever come out.
Massive = More then a handful of people can be in the same location at the same time and interact. Not just chat, or wait in a lobby to join an instance limited to 4 people.
HellGate, Guildwars, Diablo, Counterstrike are not in that category. Guildwars allows for a great many people to sit in town and interact, trade, form parties, so it walks that line, but the instances themselves are very limited. Diablo doesn't offer even that, you sit in a chat room, make a game with a handful of friends and join it, fight to the end of the level and end it. The world is not persistent, you're basically replaying the same level from start to finish with some randomization of layout, loot and creatures.
And yes you can distill that down to say that similar concepts appear in many recent MMO's but those are large persistent worlds where a good many players can gather and interact in the 3d environment.
I wish ppl would get over the over-specific definition and start reporting on great games. There are all sorts of rubbish jRPGs on here, Diablo should make it easy.

it's not an MMO
I think it is an MMO, and I came to this site expecting a forum. That is reason for there to be one.
Why would you say it's not an MMO?
Yeah it's not an MMO, I don't see any Diablo 2 forum so i don;t think they will add a D3 one =P

I wonder why some people think that Hellgate: London is a mmorpg
Spoils of War - The quickest way of ending a war is to lose it.
Diablo is no considered a MMO cause it has servers like CS, It is not an open world.(Like DAoC, EQ2, WoW)
We do not kno who wD3 will play out and they will prob add one later on, maybe.

If Diablo games count as being MASSIVE multiplayer, then what qualifies as being just regular multiplayer?

please don't say you are comparing guild wars to battle.net?
Mass Multiplayer, check
Online, check
Role-Playing Game, check.
it IS an MMO !
you guys are comparing a list of servers vs. MMO servers. if what you say is true, then Halo and Counter-Strike are MMO's...which isn't true.
WOW has a list of servers.
I wouldn't mind one..
Guild Wars is very instanced.. and Hellgate: London..

That's true but it's all in game with players then you go into you're area, Diablo has a chat room then servers.
When you leave the game you're in a chatroom persay not in game(I.E. GW)

Nah... I just meant the lines aren't THAT clear..
I can see why it would pose a problem to include it here... Guess the excitement of the announcement got me carried away

i don't know how to make it any more clear.

Well this website is paid for by advertising, and Diablo 3 has a lot of potential players, not including them in this site is stupid. kthxbai
