Ok so I have only played 3 MMO's before...Runescape, WoW, and Archlord.
I went back to RS a while ago and it is great except for the graphics and combat...(after update the graphics are still low quality) Also playing RS is grounds for being banished from social life in my school, literrally. "dude your dumb." "at least I dont play RUNESCAPE/WoW~!@! hahahahhh" Nuff said.
I went back to WoW for a month, but I quit because I got bored at lvl 47..you don't get any new spells or anything basically after that it's just like oh I'll be lvl 70 in 4 months...
but the reasons i've played these games is listed below and im lookin for a new game maybe
Mostly because
1) My friends were playing,
2) They were the only ones I knew about
3) Archlord is free
K so.
I'm not extremely picky but ill list some things I like
- My computer isn't that great (128Mb vid card, 512mb ram, 2ghz processor) so games where I just meet minimum requirements typically run fine, but look like crap. (Archlord, and LOTRO)
- I like how in Runescape, you didn't just go to this area, and train, get 3, 5, 10 lvls then go to this area.
- I like an economy similar to RS, where you actually can buy good stuff with a lot of money, that can be resold. And you build up being rich (might be confusing)
- I like normal combat system that is in more mmo's like WoW, but an Oblivion or AoC style would be sick as well
- attention toward little details not just characters and stuff, like how the interface looks, the items, etc.
- Mini-games...lots of em, and interesting ones
- Custom quests, with requirements, not always, kill x amount of this, or talk to x,
- I don't mind having to pay up to $20 a month
- I dislike how the jappanease (sp?) or korean style graphics if you know what I mean
- Lots of useful skills
- Player owned/guild owned houses/shops are great
- PvP < I love PvP
- very large communites, lots of people to talk to
- A need to explore whole map
- Custom quest rewards, I really like this about RS. like the desert treasure quest in which you unlock tons of new spells
- Classes I can go either way, but as long as there are healers, dps, tanks, and som1 with stealth im good
I might edit and put up more but realize I do not expect a game that will cover every single one of these things.
Just to put this up I'll put my idea of a dream game.
A game based in medieval times in which you choose if you want to be a noble, mercenary, a beggar (thief), a knight/wizard etc, or all that but evil
The nobles are those who complete quests in such that would advance them to become a count, and a king. And then if you became a king of this much territory you could try recruit real players as generals, and knights, archers, etc. Winning battles would result in more territory, more fame (just by the way of things not like something scripted)
An assassination of the king, his castle being raised, etc. would result in the kind becoming a count or something.
Beggars could be bribed by a king/count to gather information about other nations, cites, etc.
Knights/wizards etc follow the king's orders for money and exp, most armor would be acquired through craftsmen, most people can be craftsmen.
Mercenaries...obvious, paid to do assassinations, fight in battles, that kind of thing.
^ personally, I think that'd be the coolest thing

Ah, right now, I'm not sure what to suggest. Many here are just waiting for a few titles to come out to see if this next year has anything good for the MMO community. A few games come to mind: WAR, Aion, Mythos, Darkfall, and Earth Eternal.
If you want a released game, there is a link here on the site that lists 'em. Also, there are forums to the left which consist of well known released games. Do some research and find what suits you best, since you're probably going to have several fanbois tell you their game is best. I used to think the 2D version of RS was the BOMB. I LOVED it. I enjoyed it so much that when it went to 3D, I quit. I had a well established character too. My point being is that many people have many different tastes and people tend to exaggerate. Be careful and take advise here with a grain of salt.
With that said, here are a few options:
Anarchy Online
EverQuest 2
Lord of the Rings Online
Shadowbane
