Not another Age of Conan.

Im really looking forward to Warhammer Online! Im just hoping that EA Mythic doesnt dissapoint the players like Funcom did. This is what happend with Age of Conan... Announcing a drop in content... then releasing an incomplete game. And all that people are saying is "Oh, just wait about 5 months and the game will be great!!!"

I just dont want to be dissapointed again.

tbh that's what annoys me about MMOs in general these days.

Apparently it's considered acceptable practice for a developer to release and start charging for an incomplete product with the promise that it'll be working in a month or six.

its a solid game so far, if you like WoW you will probably love WAR ... its pretty much the same game different skins with more emphasis on PVP.

and yes I am a beta tester.

The same thing is happening with movies. The quality is dropping because it costs so much to do the art work/special effects. No one wants to go out on a limb to do something different because of the investment cost and no one is willing to risk more money then necessary (like a long beta)

This should be in the WAR forum but yeah...they won't make the mistakes Funcom did.

    --------------------------------------
A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

    Order of the White Border.

They already did.  No real death penalty to speak of. That most likely spells a short life for WAR already and it hasn't even launched yet.

There is no death penalty in WAR?  That must have been one of the other so called "Boring" things they are taking out of the game that are in other MMO's.  If there isn't a death penalty that is the 2nd thing that I dont like about the game already. The first is there is no weapon damage.

Okay. I see this arguement/complaint/ect all the time about WAR.

How the hell does it make it a bad game?

yea because the 10 minute DP in WoW caused it's downfall a might quick right?

sorry if you havnt noticed, but no one likes being deeply penalized for death on a PVP game where people will be spam dying..

Exactly. This isn't some PvE raid game where it's almost impossible to die and you have to be careful. It's a game were you will die. A lot. Even if you're 'uber-l337'. Having a harsh death penalty in a game like WAR is just going to deter people from RvRing, not encourage them...

If this was a 100% PvE game, I would want a harsh death penalty. In a PvP game I just want to kill and be killed without a death penalty.

Wow is a great game for what it is. Which is a simplistic no depth game. Kept me interested for a couple months when it first came out and another couple when the last expansion came out.  No game I have tried that has no real death penalty has been worth playing for more than a month or two. I had forgotten how refreshing it was to actually have to earn your advancement till I started playing FF XI, which while old and having a sucky UI at least has enjoyable game play.

A short leveling curve and no death penalty typically yields no game to play after a month or so. Given developers statments and what we know from the beta's Thats what I am expecting from WAR as well. The next big successful MMORPG won't  get there by trying to out WOW WOW.

Tell that to anyone who plays Eve.

If it was a 100% player created economy, then I would want a harsh death penalty. WAR's death penalty system I think is still under NDA so I can't comment on that, but I will say that a harsher death penalty creates a different type of play style. One that forces you to become more tatical than ZERG ZERG ZERG.

And you don't have to have the PVE death penalty apply in the PVP aspect of a game. Although I still think having more than a slap on the wrist death penalty is a good thing even in PVP. I can see the arguement though for having a lesser harsh death penalty in the PVP environment.

I agree........ If there is no death penalty people are going to go PK crazy, which i guess kinda makes sense in a PvP based game.   Will you get EXP for PvP kills? Cuz if not I have a feeling  eventually High level characters are going to go to low level places,  gank and camp. That would make it  hard to level up cuz your dying so much you can't get anything done.

Pvp should be a little like shadowbane, where your corpse is lootbale with items stored in you inventory. No xp loss.. This way every kills can yield different rewards,, Big ones.. Small ones.. and none..

then you better hope you can stomach it because pretty much War = WoW with Warhammer skins. if you hate WoW with a passion, you might want to wait till the demo of the game comes out.

its always refreshing noticing how the old habit of voicing an opinion about something you clearly have no fucking clue about is still up and kicking.

do you know at least we are talking about WAR here, dont you? try to gather some more info before talking

no,scratch that...try to gather any info on the subject before talking.

I agree. People hesitate when there is a high death penalty. I want to rush into the fight with nothing to lose and experiment with different rushes.. rather than if I die that means I lose this mentality.

Yes, hesitation is good, at least your engaging your brain and having to think about what your doing.  They also get adrenalin rush with some sort of loss potential.

Its just two different approaches to PVP really.  The one that WAR (and WOW) follow is to make death pretty much painless permitting players to throw them selves into the fray endlessly with no thought to the consequences, sort of like a shooter really, and which appears to be one of the more popular styles of PVP.

A second option is to add serious consequences to dying in varying degrees, such as seen by L2, EVE and Shadowbane.  These games have not proven to be as popular, but they do induce a completely different mindset with regards to PVP.

You have to play much more defensively, engage only when you have a reasonable chance to ensure victory, team up frequently to help improve your odds and band together into strong, like minded organizations that struggle for survival.

PVP with consequences is the play style I prefer, but I realize I'm in the minority.  I'm not really sure I'm looking forward to WAR, back when I played DAOC I grew bored of the conventional RVR realms pretty quickly. and only the fact I discovered the FFA PVP realms did it really become fun and hold my interest. WAR doesn't appear to offer that alternate rule set atm, so I have my doubts regarding the game's long term appeal.

Because yes Virginia, when you get right into it, it does get boring going out into the same RVR zones over and over and over and over taking and and retaking the same keeps.

Maybe WAR will prove to be different, I'll  probably give it a try just to see. But it just might not be the game for me.
