Tome of Knowledge, what am I missing?

Instead of writing a bit post of all my issues Ill break down the subjects into specific post since each feature of the game seems quite huge.

The Tome of Klnowledge, it didn't seem like anything spectacular to me.  I absolutely entered this game with no knowledge of what it does.  When I checked it out in game, it looked like a guide book with tips, beastiary, and quest log.  Later I noticed the achievements.  the achievements actually give EXP and other bonuses.  This was the only special feature I saw.

Right now the Tome of Knowledge seems very simular to City of Heroes badge and achievement system.  Is there more to the Tome than I am seeing?

It tracks pretty much anything you do in the game. Bestiary, quest log, exploration, talking to certain NPCs, even odds and ends like dying X number of times and such. It's integrated with the game pretty deeply. Still, I'm not sure what you were expecting? It almost seems like you thought it would be some life-changing experience.

I think it's a bit like what you have in LotRO. That Achievement system tracks mostly everything as well, quests completed, areas explored, abilities used etc etc.

It's nothing revolutionary, but it is a very cool feature because it gives you additional incentives to do stuff I think.

It's  a nice little thing to read through, especially if you're just waiting around to enter scenerios.  You'll also be able to set your titles that you've earned or see what kind of tactics you've discovered.  I thought it was a fun feature, but yeah, it's not life-changing.

The way the Mythic staff and fans were talking about it I could have swore it was as important as RVR.  When people talk about features this is typically what I saw.

"The revolutionary features int his game is the awesome focus on RvR.  There's a no recipe crafting system finally.  You can also attend a tcompetitive Public quest to earn exp and rewards which no other MMO has done.  Then there is the TOme of Knowledge OMG OMG OIMG!  WOW OMG!! Tome of Knowledge!"

I over exagerate a touch but hearing how people talked about it when arguing in favor of this game, I thought I was going to see Jesus though it and ascend to heaven or something.

I got a random title called "Ow My Eye" for clicking on myself 100 times (rune priest) and that made me smile.

    What more do you expect?

The Tome of Knowledge is just like the XBOX 360 achievement system. There really is no point to it, just for collectors and people who love to spend time making their characters unique.

I wouldn't doubt though that in the future the ToK will unlock more titles, rewards and items.

I never understood the excitment about the Tome, but I kept silent, I had enough arguments with fans on other issues.

Like has been said, more than anything it's like LotRO's system.  There are a lot more things that it tracks, and a lot of those things are mysteries until you actually complete them.  What makes it different from LotRO is the amount of lore that it incorporates.  A lot of the entries are really fun to read!

It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but that's fine.  There are several player archetypes out there.  One is the Explorer, and another is the Achiever.  The Book of Knowledge rewards both of these types of players:

Achievers are pretty obvious.  Every unlock is a victory for them, and as important to this kind of player as a new level.  I guarantee there will be whole websites springing up for the sole purpose of finding out what all the unlocks are and how to get them.

Explorers are also rewarded because many entries are unlocked only by traveling to a certain place.  Every zone has at least 10 exploration unlocks in it, and some are supposed to be very hard to find.

Will any of this matter to the other two archetypes?  Well, the Socializer will get some benefit because the Book of Knowledge becomes a catalyst for conversation.  People will talk about how they got achievements, some bit of lore that an unlock gave, etc.  That really just leaves the Killer -- and he frankly couldn't care less about any of it.  For him, the game will be all about the RvR action.

So in the final analysis, the Book of Knowledge serves a very powerful purpose.  It positively impacts the experience of three out of four player archetypes.  That is good for long term subscribership, which in turn is good for the future of the game.  And that means that even the Killers will benefit from the BoK, albeit indirectly.

Indeed, the Tome should be awesome. As an 'ESAK' I'm looking forward to it a great deal.

    Playing: Single-player games
Awaiting: Stargate, Star Trek, assuming the burnout has passed
Retired: WoW, BC, LotRO, DDO, CoH/V, EVE, WotLK, WAR

I wanted to clarify it'll even support the "Killer" type player. There is an unlock for each class when you're killed by them (The Victim titles) and also ones once you kill X number of that class ect.

Hell I even got one for winning so many battles with less than 5% health. Who wouldn't want that title?

Would be cool if it unlock other classes to, like those that were cut instead of implementing them in a patch. Or an xpac.  Like when you reach lvl 40 you have acces to one of them. It would encourage players to start again in the lower tier zone with the new class and keep the subscriber busy a while longer.

I think it is kind of neat. I especially like when I'm out in the middle of nowhere and find something I can click on and it gives me a tome unlock describing something or other and a small XP bonus. Makes it feel like exploring a bit is actually worth it in the game.

I think people who really enjoy lore etc will get a kick out of it. Same way that people like little books that you can actually read in game or being able to sit in chairs etc. The little things can add a lot to a game.
