Originally posted by vrtldave *NOTE before reading this understand I did not read all the posts in full detail and just skimmed them, mostly because I am lazy, so what I am going to say might have been already posted.... its kinda like how people choose a girl... if a girl asks what you are looking for in a girl you say personality(content), but really you first eyeball it for its "hotness"(or what ever you like to call it)(hotness=graphics)... if the hotness intrestes you will check it out to see how she is(trial, etc.)... but if she is to annyoing(grind) or to dumb(lack of content) you move on... now with the girls you passed by the first time because they werent as pretty as the first girl(lower graphic games) you come to them and see how they work out.... I hope I am not the only one that can make this connection, and yes it is sad I did make the connection, also if anyone offended by this please tell me and I will delete post...
You made a good connection but you forgot one thing. Some people look for the personality (content) in a woman first before their looks (graphics). Love doesen't mean hottnest (in other words graphics dosen't mean greatness . . .somthin like that). Sometimes you talk to the woman (trial) and if you like her you get to be in a relationship (the full download and thats were the *cough*sex*cough* and marrage may come in). Ya feel me? (slang )

Yeah sure... 1/1000000 people just might look at the personality before the looks.
Answer me this, don't lie, be honest. If the women is 800 pounds and is 155cm tall, very ugly, picks their nose, but has a super good personality, will you even consider her?
Thanks for your time, I used to say that also (i look at personality before looks, but I lied to myself).
Graphics can enhance a players enjoyment in the game or distract him/her from what the game intends.
Graphics should not necesarily be viewed as a separate entity from other aspects of the game. Graphics like any other aspect in the game is dependant on every other thing to create the game experience. Thus graphics can affect gameplay much as anything else can according to how well it meshes with the rest of the game world.
If the look of the game does not deter from the game experience the graphics are basically a moderate success. If the look of the game does not deter from the game experience but also enhances the game experience then the graphics are a major success.
To put labels and standards on things and set them in categories only ostracizes other areas.

agree. To much whining about graphics. In a mmorpg that should be able handle 100's of ppl on the screen at once , the graphics cant be like doom3. And if we sometime get a fully dynamic world the graphics must be kinda simple, atleast for now..
And it so damn anoying when kids yell "LAG LAG" . I am sure its the same kids that complains about bad graphics all the time..
Graphics suck you in, game play keeps you playing. But lets be realistic here. If game play really were that much greater than graphics, we would all still be playing MUDs right now.

I never knew what the kids that yell that are thinking. Whenever they lag, they yell "LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGG", like it makes it any better? like anyone cares if u lag or not?
we are in a society of where we want it and we want it all, and we want it now. Instant self gratification. And these are the same games that rise and fall within months.
We see games coming, people yelling ohh Great graphics, play the game then come back and say three months later the game sucks, graphics great, but game sucks.
As pretty as the wrapping is on a package, until you can truly see what is inside, that is all it will be, a pretty package.
True, graphics will pull in people, but the game itself is what makes people stay.
I prefer depth over appearance, but that is just me

Originally posted by Annekynn I personally have never quit a game because the graphics werent good enough. I regularily replay classics like fallout, xcom, master of orion etc because the GAMEPLAY is so superior to most of todays games that its simply pathetic if you think about it. For me graphics are only a problem if they dont adequately portray the game. If im playing a space based game, and I can clearly distinguish between ships, stars, planets, asteroids etc, thats all great. It doesnt matter if the planets are 2d sprites or 3d polygons. When it comes to mmrpgs, while its always NICE to play a beautiful game, its never necessary. Ive never quit an mmrpg because of the graphics. I always quit because of the gameplay. When was the last time you heard someone quitting because a character had 500 polygons instead of 1500? Versus people quitting because the character was gimped/underpowered/unbalanced or the gameplay was broke/bad etc. Gameplay is king . Anyone who says that WoW graphics are cartoonish or EQ2 graphics are clay like, is simply an idiot that has no idea what a GAME is all about. But alas, we live in a world where people are easily distracted/corrupted by preety colors and elven females in mini skirts and with big boobs -------------------------------------- Played: AC1, DAoC, E&B, SWG Tested: AC1, AC2, DAoC, Eve, Planetside, Rubies, Lineage 2, MU Online
You listed my favorite games. However I expect them to look dated. When they came out, the graphics were first-rate. The reason Master of Orion 3 failed was because they failed to improve on the graphics from the first one. I was basically the same game as my beloved first one bt graphics were just awful. And if Fallout 3 ever gets made, it better dam well have good graphics too.
You are right, graphics arent the end all to a game. However, the games you mentioned above did have excellent graphics for their time. The content though is definitely what made them legendary games.
SWG is a classic example that graphics dont mean success. Probably has the best graphics of any mmorpg and yet game is terrible to play and lacks depth and content. Hmm SOE Made SWG with excellent graphics and terrible content. Hmm, and now SOE is making a new game with excellent graphics and well, we'll see...
Anyone who reads my post knows i will take gameplay over graphics anyday.
However i believe in a certain standard. If you release a mmorpg in 2003 with shadowbane graphics i think thats way off because its far below par.
While majority of the effort should go to gameplay a certain standard is needed.I for one think WoW is standard enough.Sure its not very good in graphics but its quite ok.
Also i rarely take intrest in point and click games. Some here have posted that the love it over WASD.So in this case its personal preference. For me WASD has given me a personal touch and feel to my character which is why i love mmorpg(the ability to be your character).

I think the issue does not lie in graphics alone.

The technology level isn't really important for me....
Just so long as its visually appealing. There are some SNES games that are still more pleasing to the eye than modern 3d done poorly.
