U.O., for whatever it may be worth in terms of gameplay, is the most graphically challenged MMORPG I've ever seen. Diablo, with it's 1994 graphics, is a par above UO, so for UO to be as exciting as you say, it must have been a heck of a game to overcome those shortcomings.
You've got a strong formula with Vanguard. EverQuest soul + MS cash & clout = something that won't fall by the way side. MS knows these guys can make an addiction and MS needs an MMOG entry in an industry that has been proven once again to be anything other than niche.
Why do you think they sold off the ACs and aborted Mythica? Insects... They wanted the big guys to make them something... Big.
Plus even if it does end up being mediocre, it will still serve MS well to show off their XNA platform. That's where the cash is. Might as well try to get two birds while you are at it.
