Why is Bioware making a StarWars MMO?

I visited the site and it doesn't even look good.  They'd be much better off to build something like a true D&D Online MMO or another fantasy style MMO..  Bioware is real good at building those kinds of RPG's.

Yes, just what this market needs, another fantasy mmo.

I also think what we have seen so far looks pretty bad for the SW MMO, but I'd rather see a SW mmo than anything else.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

You're so right OP, BioWare should stick to fantasy games, I mean Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic were rubbish....

I agree the site doesn't look or work all that well. But while bioware may have made good fantasy games...I think they did a pretty good job on KoToR games as well. And as already mentioned, we have oodles of fantasy MMOs already, and I am sure there will be more fantasy MMOs comming out before SW comes out.

    Who cares?

As long as it's better than Dark and Light, Dungeons & Dragons Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Vanguard, Tabula Rasa, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Age of Conan and Warhammer Online.

Did I forget any of the crash and burners?

Rubbish? There are plenty of people... including myslef... that would disagree with you on that one.

I'm really glad they're not doing a standard fantasy mmo... we have enough of em already...

I would have been just as happy if it had been that Balders Gate type of MMO that some of the rumours spoke about and I believe that bobfish were being sarcastic.

i wrote a reply to ask how you could think KOTOR and Mass Effect were rubbish.... posted it... then realized you were being completely sarcastic... oops

I dunno.  I wasn't a huge fan of the KOTOR stuff.  I was more of the Forgotten Realms person myself and if they stuck to that stuff I'd have been happier personally.  But whatever, if this works then it works.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

TR did not crash and burn, its still a very active played mmo and NOT fantasy.

Devs need to step out of the box and stop making the typical "lets play an elf hehehehe" mmo aka fantasy games, Fallen Earth is going to rule the mmo base when the game comes out. Watch out for it guys

Yeah and they could have it where you could play Elves and Dwarves too and fight against Orcs and Dark Elves...that would be awesome.

    Internet sarcasm ftw!

You know Atari, the people who hold the computer game licenses for DnD have created their own online division, though it remains to be seen whether casual games or MMOs will be their focus.

I too love Forgotten Realms and think DDO is pretty pathetic, but that doesn't mean BioWare's Star Wars MMO won't be good as well. And as Wizards are making a revived push back into the Forgotten Realms setting I think its infinitely possible that we will see more games come along that use that setting.

Though I'm aware that they are planning something along the lines of a relaunch for DDO, with revamping the new player experience happening in the next update, so may not get a FR MMO for awhile.

So NC Soft isn't considering closing down TR then?

Thats what I have heard anyway.

    Why? Money, pure and simple.

Why on earth do we need ANOTHER fantasy MMO? Fantasy MMOs are crap.

MAYBE they're making a Star Wars MMO because it's the most successful and lucrative IP ever in the history of ever, and they've already knocked it out of the park single-player with the first KOTOR game? Maybe? Bueller?

So I started to walk into the water. I won't lie to you boys...I was terrified. But I pressed on, and as I made my way past the breakers, a strange calm came over me. I don't know if it was divine intervention or the kinship of all living things, but I tell you, Jerry, at that moment ... I was a marine biologist.

Perhaps in 3 years time they will make a mmorpg based on FR.

Dear god...please...no. I think I'd rather see AAA stay away from...well...the IPs I enjoy in the coming years and just make up their own worlds to make their themepark games from. That way I won't give a crap about them and won't feel let down in anyway, hehe.

I would like to think it's because Bioware have a very good track record of developing the game they set out to, with no compromises.

Of all companies I think Bioware has the best chance of making a game that will outlast WoW, and will not be catered to the toung lolling retarded mass invasion of the brainless random keybashers suffering from a self induced epileptic seizure of massive proportions that has left them too stupid to play anything more complex than WoW with 246 addons that do everything including wipe their ass.

    OP:

    Why?

Star Wars = Most awesome IP ever made.

BioWare = One of the most awesome game creators ever.

Combine and you get what? Hopefully, something really really fantastic. Now shush about "how you don't like it" or something equally ignorant

I do see your point it is like saying "Cake is awesome....and Ice cream is awesome I can just combind the two and i have even more awesomeness" but it could be on the other hand to such as "Well sex is awesome, and hanging out with my guy friends is awesome" do you see the example there?

BioWare has gone steadily downhill since the BG days years ago. KoToR was medicore at best. And they really hit rock bottom with the Mass Effect garbage where they were more concered with putting out those silly and infamous Unreal Engine marketing shots of faces instead of making a high quality and bug free game.

Anyone waiting around for BioWare to put out a good game these days is like the pathetic sods thinking Rare will somehow magically return to their glory days. BioWare would never of sold themselves to EA if they still had the means and desire to put out BG quality games.

It's just smart business.  Not to mention the folks at BioWare are HUGE Star Wars fans.

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

Drawing stupid examples like that won't do much really. Fact: BioWare makes awesome games. Pretty much general opinion: Star Wars owns.

That a good company makes a game in a universe they are well familiar with in the past is more likely to become a success than your stupid compareance with cake and ice cream ever will be
