I dont want to write a big long paper about this, but I thought it might be something to think about.
Is it possible that sitting around for a year waiting for a game to come out, imagining what it will be like and making up your own ideas of it actually ruin the game when you finally get to play it?
Does the preconcieved idea of what the game will be like inevitably disapoint you when you realise it's no where near what you expected?
Would not following a game at all and just jumping in on retail day keep you from being disapointed with it?
Not saying that not following a game will make it good, just that imagining what a game is like might disapoint.
Just a thought I had thinking back to all of my mmorpg experiences.

I agree. Same goes for MOvies too.
movies are a let down because of expectations.
unless it is Lord of the Rings.
that blew everyone away.
i also agree overhype of a mmorpg can kill it as soon as its released
The whole problem is instead of spending money to develop a game that people would WANT to play the money gets spent on marketing. The companies start taking ads out in PC gamer etc etc the next thing ya know theres a buzz about it on websites and tv shows.
Then we go try the game out and guess what its just like all the others out there and we become dissapointed.
Want to ENJOY an mmo?
Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.
Just play the damn game:)
My example for this to be a fact is Resident Evil: Outbreak. back like 3 years ago (cant remember exact date but long ago) I heard that Resident evil was going to be online... I followed it thinking how great it was going to be studying all the early screenshots and this was before ps2 network adapter came out. I thought it was going to be resident evil games just with other people. and they said you could turn into a zombie WOW! Okay so the time comes when it comes out i get it the same day... What a big dissapointment no voice chat because they think you will loose immersion, but i guess sitting in their office playing it in the same room they didnt realize it is really fustration trying to tell somone to do somthing by only choosing from a list of words.
Now for the being a ZOMBIE!!! OMG WHAT CRAP. Your a zombie for what like 1 min? and by that time everyone else is already dead. I would say technically your not a zombie because you keep saying things like... "is this the end?" "I can't go on" blah blah crap crap. and using the HDD? for what just fast loading? what crap they could have at least added some kind of gamesave on it too but lol no you need a memory card.... well that is an example of what the origional poster means and i agree with him a whole bunch!! release info just before the game is released like a month or 2 before!
It is a double edged sword. If you do not hype your game you do not attract enough customers (word of mouth is truely overrated in this instance) and if you over hype your game you ultimately dissapoint and lose what you gain.
Publishers demand the hype and developers simply try to meet it, the important thing for all of us is simply don't believe it
Yeah your right, it has a lot to do with the fact that your imagination will always out do reality.
This applies to everything in life except poontang
