I really hoped that despite the extremely linear progression line of TOR we might have seen a really good Star Wars MMO. The RMT announcement just killed it permanently for me.
Not only is Bioware (which is producing increasingly questionable products) essentially charging people a monthly fee to play a (mostly) single player game, but they are added RMT into the game from the start. If this is the future of MMOs, I'll go back to single player games, and failing that, to pen and paper. The very idea that people could essentially buy a better character has always been repulsive to me. As far as I'm concerned, if you are spending money for virtual items, you are either incredibly stupid or have too much money. In either case, you're also a cheat and have absolutely no integrity as a person.
I would even go so far as to say that TOR is a scam. Think about it. Even if you're not paying a monthly fee (which is unlikely given the greed involved and the cost to develop this game) you're still making an initial purchase, only having to pay more money just to stay competitive in the game.
This is crazy! Imagine if Blizzard announced RMT for items in Diablo 3 or Starcraft 2?
And for the record, Smedly, the man who brought SWG to ruin and is now doing the same to EQ2 with his own RMT system, thinks RMT is a good idea. Anything that man thinks is a good idea should be regarded as a crime against humanity.

RMT doesn't bother me aslong as you can get it in game through doing content. If you can only purchase it with real money however then it stops me from playing.
A little late to join that particular discussion, aren't we?
I'll just answer with points. Too tired to write more:
1) No business model has been decided on (which, for me, means that the announcement was a huge ploy to test the waters for the possibility of a MT model)
2) RMT /= MT
3) You don#t even have a clue what sort of MT model they werethinking about -if- they are still thinking about it.
4) WoW has MicroTransactions.
5) EVE Online utilizes a perfectly legal RMT system...none of their players complain about it.
6) Blizzard has announced that there will be more MT things being added to WoW and probably also Diablo 3.
Thank you. Good night.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
RMT + linear game + NPC hirelings + instances = failure of an MMO
Darkfall Travelogues!
They already said there has been NO official announcement on RMT, also they ARE listening to the community and have heard everything on the main website about people bashing it. I for one like there's a story with an out come depending on what you do in game with no going back to change it. This might make leveling easier and not such a "grind" feeling as you'll be paying more to a story and not just collecting a bunch of quests without reading or caring about what you're doing. NO ONE has played this game or knows how this will work out just a bunch of people bashing the game and it's ideas, please wait for the open beta or a lot more info before you jump to conclusions and try to sum up a game no one has played. Although the flame boys will flame...
I'll just answer in points as well:
1) The simple fact that they are considering RMT or MT or whatever you want to call paying real money for in-game items is a terrible idea.
2) They are close enough
3) Although this relates to point one, it doesn't matter. Clearly if they are unwilling to reject MT outright, we have a problem.
4) I don't play WoW, and I won't play WoW based on that alone
5) I don't play EvE, and I won't play EvE based on that alone (Though EvE never appealled to me anyway)
6) If Blizzard adds MT to SINGLE PLAYER RPGs I will make it my personal mission to ruin the life/lives of that development team.
Again, whoever actually uses MT outside of F2P games should be regarded as the scum of the MMO world.
warcraft doesnt have MT that make your character be more advanced and more powerful than other peoples. They just charge for server transfers and character name changes, etc.
If you like a story with an outcome, then play a single player game. Why would you pay a monthly fee to do that? It's a total scam and way to make a quick buck.
It's your business whether or not you want to care about quests in other MMOs, but YOU MAKE THAT CALL. What's to say someone won't do the same thing with TOR and then complain about the grind? Also, what's the end game? What do you do after the story is done? Is that when the actual MMO part begins where I get to make my own story and not have disucssions about which way I turned down the hallway on the same space station that everyone else in the game world has experienced?
Where's the individuality? Where are the tools for players to create their own content?
No one knowing how this game will work in practice is the fault of the developer. They could lay out the game right now, today, and explain how the game works and give us their features list. Instead, MT rumors have people running for the escape pods.
The next great MMO won't be a linear storyline. It will be a game where players are forced to interact with each other, build settlements with each other, band together to fight with each other, and actually form real relationships with each other. That's the heart and soul of the MMO and why so many of us originally got into them in the first place.
These games used to be such a major investment that companies were actually concerned about people enjoying the games for a long period of time and providing long term rewards that would keep players coming back. No longer, and now so many of us REAL MMO players have no MMO.
I don't like casual gamers. They've ruined MMOs forever.
{ Mod Edit }
Yes it does.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
a scam, lol.. qq more
cant make anything better out of this cry of despair over something so superficial as this
MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)
Excellent line and one I've heard many times before. Regardless of my opinion, casual gamers count for a huge amount of income, and their majority will only increase.
Here are some more good lines I'm sure you'll like:
