Is it possible to install an MMO on say a 500G usb drive, patch the game and play it on another comp?
the simple answer: yes.
but remember that different pcs have different specs, so you might have to change some settings everytime you switch pc. For some games like WoW the interface "adopts" itself easily to a different resolution. Other games such as LOTRO or SWG might have problems and you have to set up the interface everytime anew which is probably the most tedious part.
and finally, a USB drive might not be equally fast as an internal hdd, so you encounter lag or longer loading times occasionally.
Thx for the reply, I mainly want to patch the game at a friends house with a faster internet speed since mine is acting up, If i did this could i move the game off the usb and onto my pc or will it be stuck installed on the usb forever? Thx again for the response.

install it on the usb, patch the game on the usb, take it back to your computer, right click drag (and move) the whole WoW folder to your C drive, You should have a fully patched WoW ready to load from your HDD
