Anyone else get this message from Blizzard in regards to their WoW accounts that have been down for a while? I found it a little hard to believe since my account has not been active since June of 07'. Perhaps Blizzard's exploit filter isn't as good as everyone claims.

I got banned for saying "Dont do it man, it's an exploit!", talking to my friend about to do some exploit, been so long I forgot which one :P and the weird part is, he didn't even get banned.

Meh, I couldn't care less if they banned the account. I would like to know if someone has been using the account since I can't log in to see if it has been rebilled. Sent Blizzard a message just to check and see will update when I hear back from them.

This exact same thing happened to me like a year or so ago. I went to resub an account that had been inactive for a year and a half to find out it was banned.
I never recieved an email, they wouldnt disclose any information on it other than saying I was banned for using illegal third party software. When I stopped playing, I cancelled the account on my own will, I was in good standing and never even used addons back then. Turned out it was banned while the account was inactive.
didnt matter, my highest level toon was level 35 (right..leet hax0r level 35) and was on Argent Dawn so due to queues I was moving anyway. Bought a new box for $10, free month new server and resubbed.
but yes, Ive had my account banned while it was inactive for an extended period of time and never ran mods or addons or..anything.

Did you get that message when you tried to log in or in an email? If it was an email, odds are it is a phishing scam. I get them all the time.
If it is really banned, odds are you got hacked some time ago or some family member who shares your billing information got caught doing something on their account and you were banned by association.
There has been a rather large influx of account compramises this christmas. Some asian folks have been been brute force hacking quite a few accounts.
My brothers was accessed with it being inactive, thankfully we caught it the next day and got the account back.
You were most likely banned as they used your account to spam a site with their adds, or botting in game, etc.
Contact blizzard account management, explain that the account hasnt been used in a year, and they will restore your account.
Blizzard has been known for mass banning waves. most likely your account had a character name similar to one that was exploiting and they just dropped the hammer as wide and hard as possible just to have a massive ban number for a press release.
Oh shut up. Blizzard doesn't just ban people by name. As if they type in thousands of names by hand according to you. LOL thats rich.
You have obviously never used a server tool.

Oh shut up. I had a friend who did a lot of fishing in the same spot in Tanaris. They locked his account because they thought he was a fishing bot.
Blizzard is capable of being idiots contrary to what fanboys think.
Similar complaints have been made on these forums in the past much like yours OP..... so its quite possible it was hacked and banned after you thought you closed it down.
On more than one occasion I recall getting gold selling spam from a high level character, and thinking, who would risk their high level account like this. Answer, somone who has stolen the identity of another.

I never said that wasn't possible to get falsly banned, but at the same time it is equally possible your friend was using some sort of automation program and got caught. Odds are pretty good if you get suspended for doing something there is evidence of wrong doing. While I am sure there are mistakes, I doubt most companies just suspend people without any sort of evidence or investigation.
However, I seriously doubt someone got banned due to Blizzard mispelling the name of a cheater and instead banning some innocent bystander. First VGtheory says that blizzard does mass bannings then says they type names in by hand. He then further suggests that blizzard might just ban anyone with a similar name to inflate press releases or on the off chance your character is associated with an exploiter due to a name similarities. He obviously has no idea how server management tools work behind the scenes and is just displaying ignorance.
I LIKE WOW AND THEREFOR I MUST be a "fanboi"!!!!!
Sometimes I seriously hate these forums..
And.. To stay on topic. If your account was really inactive for a long period of time like you said, then you can prob. just send a representative a message and explain. Blizzards customer service really is pretty good at responding to that sort of stuff.
-------------------------
I differ on that point, in one of their ban waves my account was frozen without any warning or reason given and despite the many attempts in trying to get into contact with authorities I had no response at all...since I was still active at the time in preparation for the new expansion, I went and brought a new game and started from scratch---this when my old account chars where top and opped out...2 months later they gave my account back, mail items lost and paid time spent...with no reason given
edit: So as a personal op their customer service is ok in most parts...aggravating in others
What stupid non-sense. Yeah Blizzard is banning peoples randomly, idiot.
After a few days of waiting I now get a response. Still a canned response from a CSR but they did reactivate my account and stuck a free month on it and sent me a pile of surveys to fill out.

There has been a serious overload of hacked accounts recently. It seems almost anywhere you go near blizzard now they are posting tips about account security and how to keep your computer safe against viruses, etc.
Cripes dude, sorry to read about that. I've known a few guild mates to have been hacked, and can somewhat relate. Glad to see it worked out, and you've been compensated though.
I've noticed that Blizzard has been posting messages in-game about changing your login, etc.

Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
In WoW you sign a TOS before you make the account stating you are paying for the privilege to pay and your account is property of Blizzard. So at the end of the day they don't need a reason to ban you.
I once got accused of win trading and all my items were taken away from me. I emailed Blizzard and they determined they had made a mistake and I did not win trade. So they mailed me back all my items without any of the enchants or gems in them which was probably worth over 3000 gold at the time. So I mailed them back and asked them to replace the gems and enchants and they refused. Basically the just took things from my character admitted to a mistake and then refused to return some of the things they took.
It just goes to show you if they want to do something to you they can. They don't need a reason nor does any reason they come up with have to be correct.

They only catch cheaters, usually they will check the server log packets to make sure... in which case your buddy got "busted".
There have been many documented cases where Blizzard was not completely right in many banned account issues. Problem is it's their game. They are God. When you have 11 million people playing the game you think they really give a crap about a few hundred mistakes? Honestly..
Guys there really is a simple solution to all of this. For $6.00 you can buy the security device from Blizz. There is no way somebody will hack your account with that device. I haven't worried about a hacker since I've had it. They could know your account name and password and still not be able to get into it and change a thing without that key code from the secure device. Everbody should do themselves a favor and buy it and activate it on your account.
