Forgotten Realms would be my first pick for a new high fantasy MMO, with true D%D ruleset, spells and all that. There is so much rich lore and the greatest gaming system ever devised to build upon.
Dune could be awesome and totally original.
Malazon by Erickson could be cool.
Wheel of Time with the Aes Sadai would be interesting
I agree with Regok. I would love to see a well thought out game world made out of SHADOWRUN!
Shadow run offers so much because there are difference races, open class creation, magic, old and modern weaponry, vehicles, and plenty of different backgrounds like megacities or Aztec temples and so forth. Plus, computer hacking in the virtual reality of the Shadowrun world could finally be graphically implemented. And, not to mention, another alternate reality in Astral space for those Awakened characters. It would be so great to play a game that could be "perceived" differently by different players even though they are looking at the same spacial place.
There have been action games with this setting before, but those miss out on all of the complexities of the pen and paper game. A MMORPG made from this setting could have so much potential... it would be like playing a game that has both fantasy and sci-fi themes all rolled into one.
Any mmorpg with the right elements will do. Right elements being FREE, OPEN, VAST, UNRESTRICTED, RP FRIENDLY and IMMERSIVE.
Just go play EvE Online. There a new game out there. I don't know why it is not on mmorpg.com but the name is Taikodom. Not tottaly finished. A lot of work is needed with the english translation but it's a nice and Free MMO. This MMO is from Portugal(Portugese i guess in english) and it's a mix of EvE and Freelancer. You totally control your ship with the same political system of eve
I'd like to see an Avatar: The last airbender MMO, based some time well before the fire nation war. Action, twitch style game play, like a bunch of the new Korean MMO's in the works. Skill system with a caps and conditions. RVR pvp but also having an outlaw system where same factions can attack eachother but be labled an outlaw.
I'd like to see an MMO take the concepts that TooHuman was using for its story, Norse Mythology heavily swirled with scifi. I really liked that concept inspite of how the game actually turned out.
It'll never happen, because no one but me wants this, and no investor in their right mind would touch it, but...
Robot City, based on Asimov's robot novels, which were extended by other authors into a series of novels of varying quality but with a consistent and immersive universe.
A mechwarrior mmo would be pretty awesome. Clanners versus the free birth scum : ). Basing it off the combat style from the PC mech warriors not that xbox crap. Piloting a mech well took skill and you had to manage heat and ammo. Another open universe full of planets that either faction could control. Maybe even add factional bonuses for having certain planets. Of course no actual player would ever fight in the way the clanners do but itd be cool anyway.
Eriksen's Malazan Books of the Fallen series would rock.
David Gemmell with the Drenai etc (Druss the Legend world).
Michael Moorcock Eternal Champion series.Probably Hawkmoon which is set on an alternate earth.
Maybe Asimov's Foundation Trilogy for a space one. Pratchett's Darkside of the Sun would also be another choice for a space one.
Agree with Shadowrun as well. That would be cool.
Thx T

Also, definitely Dragonlance (the ones with Raistlin, Tanis, Caramon etc.. the Dragons series). Would be cool because of the deities.. A mage would select which one of the moons as its deitiy, which would determine what type of mage they would be. Those stories have tons of lore and possibilities.

I'd definitely take a Warhammer 40K MMO over a Starcraft one any day
Wing Commander combined with Privateer.
Dragonlance would be cool for high fantasy

That is my opinion anyway.

These four exactly. I'd also throw in AD&D Ravenloft as well.
