"wowlikeyness" Havn't played it but for an Indy game Ill support it on an NA server. Thats what I get from watching streams and reading. Not bad so far.
So.. basically, we are being held hostage to the mega game that is WoW because we won't pay for the up and coming Darkfall? I see where you are going.. but we shouldn't have to pay for the unfinished products to have a choice..
When you look at an MMO I wish it could be all about the game but the truth is you have to evaluate the company as well. Aventurine does not instill a lot of confidence based on their actions.
They perform a limited launch due to the simple fact the game is not yet ready. Let me be clear you are PAYING for a beta and what is worse is those paying KNOW IT! Talk about serving koolaid to the public.
To make matters worse Aventurine set their own limits for the startup and STILL could not handle it. For gods sake, if they cannot handle what they say they can how can they handle a full load?
Please do not give me the small and new company lines. A few years agao a company called CCP released a little game called EVE. They where a small company and this was their first game, yet they released the only true single shard game going and have not had the MAJOR issues Darkfall has had from the start.
I hope Darkfall succeeds. I like the premise of their system, they are using some areas EVE has proven work and built from there, bravo. However as a company they have not done ANYTHING to impress me and I am concerned that I will be dropping cash on a game that will be dead in 6 months tops.
I HOPE I am wrong but until they prove themselves I will not touch their product. As for the wowlieyness, if you want something different there are quite a few out there, Darkfall is different true, but it is not break that much new ground.
"wowlikeyness" Havn't played it but for an Indy game Ill support it on an NA server. Thats what I get from watching streams and reading. Not bad so far.
This is the mentality that allows developers to release half finshed games that have little to no testing and expect to get paid for thier incomplete offerings.
I am not saying that darkfall is any of those things [or that it isn't], but blindly "funding" a company for no reason other than blind hope does not make a real alternative. It just keeps the doors open for developers to release garbage and get paid for it, because people are growing desperate.
Sorry, but a game should either be worth paying to play or it should stay in developement until it is.
No point in rewarding those who lack creativity and design ability. This isn't the first grade. Rewarding failure leads to encouragement for others to half-ass production.

I'm getting so sick of all the WoW hating on this site. Its just a very mainstreamed MMO that is accessible for newcomers to genre and casual players. However, with tons of endgame PvE content, it also continues to satisfy the needs of hardcore raider guilds. So it doesn't have the full-loot of UO, the technical complexity of AC and AO, or the xp loss and corpse runs of EQ1, get over it already. Its a good game that does well because it delivers content in truckloads.
The only legitimate reason I can see for hating on WoW is its success. People that have been playing MMOs since the 90s are afraid every major release from now till the end of time will be another WoWClone. Well I doubt this will be the case. Look at 08, AoC and WAR were very similar to the WoW formula yet are considerable failures. Aside from all their shortcomings, the reason why WoWclones will continue to crash and burn is simple indeed: You CAN'T out "WoW" WoW. You can try, but your subs will drop off like the DowJones during the subprime mortage crisis. People will play for a week or two and just go back to Blizzards loving arms because they provide the superior product. End of story.
I have finally realized this, I think publishers/developers are starting to as well. If you want to compete in the MMO market, you need to find an audience that isn't currently satisfied with products on the market. With Earthrise and Mortal Online on the horizon, its clear pubs/devs have figured out that hardcore PvPers are one such audience so quit your bitching, soon enough you'll have your game.
"Its a good game that does well because it delivers content in truckloads"
Shallow (and mostly ripped off) content does not mean GOOD content. Most of the people discontent with WoW are people who have been playing MMOs for quite some time and are used to harder games with more complexity. Giving them WoW is like giving an engineer a giant box of legos and saying its awesome! Yeah, legos are a bit fun, and there are a TON of legos in that box, but they're still legos, and they've grown used to more substantial and complex building materials.
That being said, not funding Darkfall does not mean WoWclones are the only solution. For one, people could just stop supporting that crap. I think the recent WoWcopy failures recently have put a kink in the WoWclone march. Or you could just wait for Mortal, which I actually support since their developers aren't arrogant jackbags and are at least moderately professional and seem like they know what they're doing. That and the game looks better on just about every level as well.
The entire premise of the OP is completely, and blatantly, ignorant...and frankly, not even worth the time it would take to explain why. The intelligent posters here already KNOW why it is, and the ignorant ones would still fail to grasp just why it is that this concept does not work. Therefore, it would amount to little more than a waste of my time to do so.
OP:
You are dumb, and wrong. I think you KNOW you are wrong, and that perhaps....you AREN'T dumb. But you chose to portray a dumb person in lieu of your more intelligent options, and thats what I'm going to use when I indentify you as a person from now on.
The reason for the limited release isn't because the game isn't ready. That has not been a problem for MMO companies as of late (WAR, AoC, VG, other SoE products, etc). The reason for the limited release is because they ran out of funds and don't have the money to opne another server. Seriously, if it was due to the game not being finished there would be nothing from stopping them taking our money.
Yes, lets support the poor support and management of Aventurine so their existence can perpetuate more like-minded indy companies...
First, you can't fund them because they won't take your money because they are stupid.
Second, Mortal Online is a much better option as they seem to actually have a proper dev team in place that aren't full of people suffering from mental retardation.

That game is a completly different game. Why you may ask? Because the game isn't deisgned to have more than 12v12 PvP battles and the choices a person makes is more permanent. Basically, a person builds a perma class and then can use account points to build another character (6 max). I have a feeling that game is going to be instanced.
Also, the MO dev team is using a already existing engine to build the game. 50-75% of the leg work is already done for them.
Or support Mortal Online, which doesn't look like its managed by morons.

But then again they only have about 5k players online on a server that can "Support 10k players at any given time" and they refuse to allow more people in teh game due to issues such as billing system problems, account issues and server sync problems.
But yeah, I guess its not due to the game not being finished....
As for the topic: Funding a game based on potential is a bad idea. When you start paying someone premium fees for sub par services everyone and their brother will start demanding the same treatment. Its like paying your cousin who just started med school last week $15k to give you laproscopic surgery because he shows the potential of being a good surgeon one day.
Its best to let a company prove to you they are worth the investment rather than just blindly giving money away based on potential.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

Well MO is more self admitedly more like pre-Tram UO with updated graphics than other sandboxes will be.
There's nothing wrong with having more than one character. For many it's actually a selling point to be able to have a diverse set of characters to play from like we did in UO. The one character choice of Darkfall was done to limit system storage because they can't handle anymore than storing one character on their servers -- as we all have seen they can barely handle what they have, so we should not expect more from them.

Its not. Like I said, they could just sell the game to everyone like other MMO compaines have done: AoC, VG, WoW, WAR, SWG etc all released unfinished products in some form or another. Did they hold back sales because the game wasn't finished and polished. Fuk no they sold it anyways and laughed all the way to bank. AV doesn't have the supply (server space) to meet the demand, most likely due to the fact they ran out of money. I doubt they are even using the Gni servers. They are probably still using their home server for the players playing right now because Gni servers can handle way more load than what DF is currently at.

Yea, some people like having more than one character. But the reason DF has only 1 character has nothing to do with the fact that they can't handle the load of alts. Its because they didn't want people choosing a different faction to make spying easy mode. Also, MO is using the UT3 Engine, and the devs have already admitted that their game isn't being designed to have more than small scale matches between players. That means no sieging and will probably focus PvP around mini game style matches. Again, not a bad thing, but its not exactly UO or something that makes me jump for joy. However, they may have a GvG ladder and in that case I might try it.

You buy it for me I will fund it =P
I thought of a couple replacements:
"WoW comparisons"
"WoW similarities"
"WoW Syndrome"
PS, AV is who funds it.
No.. there is another.
So.. basically, we are being held hostage to the mega game that is WoW because we won't pay for the up and coming Darkfall? I see where you are going.. but we shouldn't have to pay for the unfinished products to have a choice..

Tell you what when AV gets the idea to have more than a bunch of morons in control, I'll assume they have a game worth me funding
Playing polished, lag free, feature complete games is carebear. Whining about a game you hate but still play is hardcore man!
Well some of us couldn't fund it even if we wanted to. We have to wait until AV allows us to fund it.
It's a proven historical fact that beer saved humankind.
Or support Mortal Online, which doesn't look like its managed by morons.
will probably quit MMOs before I fund DF.
So its either I become a df fanboy or i'm a inbred son of a bi*** that doesnt have a clue about whats a good mmo.
Thought that only worked with reigion.
Guess i'm gonna have to go buy 100 copies of df even if i have no intention of playing it because it has the worst community a game can have.
I'm not a no life that sits in front of his computer all day long, I'm an intern that sits in front of his computer all day long.

pssh, forget WoW, forget DF. Go back to Dark Age of Camelot and be happy again. Darkfall can try, but nothing comes close to RvR in the Frontiers!
