The armor sets don't all look the same and some of them are stunning.
The quests have variety which include a personal quest line.
Watching a group attack is entertaining. The spell and melee animations are visually engaging.
Crafting isnt confusing.
The manastone and stygma system allows you to customize spells and armor.
The repop rate for mobs is set about right especially for how many people are playing ( and there are a lot).
Doesn't appear to be a lot of fill in quests (repeatables because of lack of content) but Im only lvl 21 so I don't know for sure.
Flying is amazing, especially in such a beautiful world.
I also like the fact that leveling is an adventure in some ways as you move through zones and complete your personal questline. I look forward to playing this game for a while.
Several are suggesting that Aion will be quest-based from 1-20 then grinding the rest of the levels. I'm unsure if they're saying this out of ignorance, or to appeal to those who keep comparing Aion to WoW's quest-based gaming, but this is untrue. It has been said, many many times by NCSoft community coordinates like Ayase and others, that people will be able to reach level cap by questing. There are a variety of quests, and the ones with the best exp/loot rewards require others to play, but if you're anti-social then there are plenty of quests to help you level that are perfectly soloable.
The "grind" is false, there is none. At most, the term "grind" can be applied to the mobs themselves, none of which are easy. Aion is a difficult game, and even normal monsters can and will rape you to hell and back if you don't play smart. They don't die in one or two spells like most games, most are aggro, and many have mob mentality. So yes, the game is quest-based, but no, it's not a tiresome tedium. While you ~can~ grind on mobs all the way to level cap, it would be a long and arduous process. There is also the Abyss, where pvp is open and enabled, where some of the best quest rewards are available because the Abyss has the most risk; you have mobs to worry about, other players, and the Balaur, the third NPC race of Aion that are like wandering raid bosses. They don't like either the Elyos or Asmo (the player races) so it's not uncommon for two people to be pvping over quest mobs just for the Balaur to appear and whoop both their asses.
In the future, I would suggest some of you do much more research so as not to misrepresent the game to others who are interested.
"Forums aren't for intelligent discussion; they're for blow-hards with unwavering opinions."
Nope, and as long as you are a Forum Troll of sorts you will always be bombarded with such posts. Also people are waiting for the next big game, because one will topple WoW whether its later this year, next year or 10 years from now lol. Thats why alot of people just post those types of posts and browse the forums for those types of posts to reply too.
I think it can be quite popular. Angels vs Demons basically, you get wings, the character customization is insane (makes RPers intrigued) and from what I've seen the PvP layout/speed and mechanics are thought out. I'm currently DLing the client for China to check it out.
I wonder if we can ever go 5 minutes without another "Will [insert name of game here] be the next big MMO/WoW Killer".
I mean honestly if we are not going to debate which MMO's are good why would we be on an MMO website?
"The best" Doesn't have to kill WoW either, I don't think they ment "Will this be a WoW killer" when they said "will this be the next big MMO?"
AoC is a big MMO, but its not a "WoW KIller" by any means.
I've stated before and I'll say it till my grave, WoW will kill itself if it ever does die. From its player base getting used to one thing and them making a drastic change that no one wanted.
(See SWG, UO, and any other number of games that have ruined themselves.)
Nope, I'm tipping SW:TOR as the next big thing. Aion is looking good, but TOR has the advantage of a killer IP and one of the best development houses in the business. I'm not enamoured of NCSoft. Auto Assault and Tabula Rasa don't instill much confidence.
Star Wars is not a killer IP.
For younger players Star Wars is geek and nerdy.
For older players Star Wars is childish.
The IP is not expressive today even in movie business, Lord of The Rings and Matrix trilogy outshined the newer SW trilogy showing SW is not popular as it used to be.
CD projekt showed even newer companies can outshine Bioware using the same engine Bioware uses for its games with The Witcher.
I think games and MMOS need new, unique and exclusive IPs and not recycled IPs from pop and mass culure like Star Wars.
...
CD projekt did not outshine bioware, are you realy comparing witcher to mass effect and kotor? Witcher was an average rpg imo.
I doubt Aion will be a big hit. Translation, dev communication, the company behind the game, lack of innovation and sheer unmitigated grind are all factors that people seem to forget when talking about Aion. None of these alone would break the game, but when you consider that Aion is effectively trying to outshine WoW at its own game... Well, we've all seen how well such efforts have panned out.
So far we've debunked AoC, Darkfall, D&L, WAR (sadly) and a whole host of other MMOs as being "the next big thing." I look forward to adding Aion to that list, because I'm fairly certain that it wont catch on to the degree that everyone else is expecting.
I also look forward to debunking SW:tOR as the next big thing. I believe it will be the best MMO since WoW, but I don't think it will be the smash hit that we all seem to hope for either.

I don't see this being true at all, how is Aion trying to outshine WoW at its own game?
You seem to have made a lot of conclusions based off the data you have that are incorrect.
Aion is trying to fuse the WESTERN MMO FEEL with the EASTERN MMO FEEL.
I played Aion Chinese open beta and here is the conclusion: Let me say 1st I WILL PLAY Aion when it starts in NA. The game feels exactly the same as WoW and whoever don't understand that is because you see the graficks only side of the game and you don't really feel it. Again aion fans dont jump up yet i will say it again I will play Aion even tho feels same as wow and reason is main thing i hated wow was graficks and purple color everywere lol. I loved the graficks and i bet anyone even trolls love them but its not the next big thing it is same old mmorpgs we are playing for many years now. Only game that has nothing to do with this kind of system and only game i spent 6 years is FFXI. So this is it this game is just another mmorpg with updated graficks but nothing new and please dont jump say flying i played perfect world for few months got tired of flying.
IMO, the majority of MMO's have become stale. It's all basically the same thing. I think Warhammer was on to something but the crafting tier sucks, the free market is boring, and the variety of gear is limited. Sooner or later, someone will get it right and until then we will have to live with shit like WoW.
I made sure that I didn't read any other response before I reply to this thread. I say yes, it's going to behave well from the start and continue with a long lifespan. Why I say this? For a few reasons: The flight aspect in an mmo will give the developers alot of more room to work with in a 3D worldspace, both in pve and pvp. This is an attraction that many mmo players have been looking for for years now. Just consider how the flying mount went over in WoW, people literally broke there necks to get them.
Secondly, the f2p public that I know and have been playing with for some time now all have the same thing in mind: "We are waiting for Aion", is the catchphrase in many mmo communities. Just ask around if you don't believe me. Graphically we have been impressed with video and screenshots on the beauty and depth of this game.
This game will do a few things, it's going to give the f2p's a run for their money and it's going to give all the people that are still playing failing mmo's like darkfall, warhammer and AoC an outlet to gravitate to. And will give all the wow (I've dont it all and feeling burnt out) something new to do. Apart from WoW their own ingame communites are failing and if you don't think that the Aion servers are going to be packed the 1st week or so you should really see a mental help specialist. Because there is always the first huge influx of players, much like warhammer and AoC had.
Now longevity is a different story. Keep in mind, I have not played this game. I am going according to posts in forums from the asian gaming community, videos, screenshots and news article's tracking the progression of this game in korea. It had the most successful beta launch and is now one of the most popular if not THE most popular played MMO in korea. And the eastern market take online gaming as a part of their culture, thats maybe why the korean gov't invested millions into the MMO market. But according to this track record I feel long term success. And I will be right there in line waiting for my box and playing the game first week. And I too are on the sidelines, "Waiting for Aion"
I say yes it will be the next big mmo simply because mostly everybody that has played the game all say that they loved it and will be buying it when it comes out. When I hear from people who have played these other games like Star Wars then maybe I can go hmm, maybe this Star Wars game will be something special but right now people are only praising it because of its name which means nonthing when it comes down to how the game will actually play.
I doubt Aion will be a big hit. Translation, dev communication, the company behind the game, lack of innovation and sheer unmitigated grind are all factors that people seem to forget when talking about Aion. How does WoW do that?
As far as I know, Aion is a quest grinding, level based MMO that features two factions for the purposes of PvP. In other words, it seems like WoW wrapped in Korean anime.
Now, I can certainly appreciate that to a degree. They're trying to do what WoW did, but they're adding their own unique touch to it. That's fine, and I'm sure it will make for a decently fun game. However, I don't think it's going to be anything to write home about. The majority of MMO "fans" seem to think that Aion is the the second coming of Raptor Jesus, just like they thought with AoC and WAR and Darkfall and... You get the point.
At the end of the day, I simply demand more than a reskin of a game I've already played and enjoyed if I'm going to drop $50 and dedicate my free time to it. And I'm going to demand a LOT more if the so-called "good parts" of the game (i.e. flight) are going to be walled off behind excessive grinding like a lot of Korean games are keen on doing.
Exactly how is Aion trying to beat WoW at it's own game when (from what I can see) Aion is a PvP focused game where as we all know WoW is definetely PvE focused. I could be wrong, that's what I see and have read. I guess I'll find out. It won't "kill" WoW but I can see it being pretty popular for sure.
What exactly is innovative about your character sprouting wings and eliminating the use of mounts? Sounds quite awesome to be honest. You sound like you're heavily wrapped up in WoW..my theory. I would of played WoW but the PvP is awful. I'm hoping this "plays" like WoW (which is smooth) but more emphasis on PvP (and it just flat out looks better). WAR dissapointed me and I hope you realize WoW wasn't the first MMO. To be honest if we are talking about originality WoW didn't really have any of it.
Aion, unlike AoC, WAR, Darkfall (which is more of a hardcore PvPers wet dream more then anything) all had issues coming out of it during beta and player feedback. In all honesty everything I've read on Aion recently is anything but negative. AoC had the lack of content and with WAR the no global chat made it feel empty and their ideas really didn't shape out the way you thought (RvR was lacking for a long time I would say). Anyway, that's my opinion.
Another Asian fested game?. No thank you. This game will be lucky enought to last the first 4 months of release. Just another flop waiting to take part into the world like the rest of them. Lol.

I'm not so sure of that. In November, the beta release of AION in Korea had record breaking concurrent users. AION is currently the #1 MMO in Korea after 6 months. That already blows the four month prediction out of the water. The CN Open Beta has been running only a few days and they have already added additional servers. The NA market has shown such a passion for the game that people are actually paying money to be able to legally get into the CN Open Beta.
AION seems to be serving up something with a decent amount of appeal to a rather wide audience.
-- Whammy - a 64x64 miniRPG - RPG Quiz - can you get all 25 right? - FPS Quiz - how well do you know your shooters?
No it will not. Mainly because asian themed MMORPGs rarely work well in the west for various reasons.
I for one can't stand the femenine look of the male characters and the overly femenine look of the female characters. I prefer the style in WAR/AoC much more.

The armor sets don't all look the same and some of them are stunning.

The next big MMO will be Star Wars: The Old Republic, not Aion. Mark my words, Star Wars: The Old Republic will be the one to beat.
When we get back from where we are going, we will return to where we were. I know people there!
I just wanted to point something out to you guys:
Several are suggesting that Aion will be quest-based from 1-20 then grinding the rest of the levels. I'm unsure if they're saying this out of ignorance, or to appeal to those who keep comparing Aion to WoW's quest-based gaming, but this is untrue. In the future, I would suggest some of you do much more research so as not to misrepresent the game to others who are interested.
