Aion impressions from a WoW Burnout

madeuxmadeux Member Posts: 1,786

I played WoW for years and completely burned myself out on it.  I tried alot of other games, as many have, but none of them seemed to grab me.

I've seen a lot of rash critisism of Aion, mostly from people who never gave it a chance, or from people whose play styles just aren't compatible with this game.

It took a while to get into, and as some have mentioned, you seem a bit lost at first, like you don't know where you are or what you're supposed to be doing, both in the short term and long term.  DONT GIVE UP!  It really pulls itself together, and makes a lot of sense.

There's nothing revolutionary here, but that's ok.  It's WoW++.  There are a lot of small enhancements that really add up.

Will Aion have staying power?  Will I be able to play it for years, the way I did with WoW?  I doubt it.  But again, that's ok.  There are a lot of game choices now, and many more on the way.  WoW built itself up when there was no competition.  I can see myself playing Aion for a few months, and then at that time I'll evaluate the other game options that are out there.

The bottom line?  If it's not for you, don't waste your time or our time trashing it.  If it is for you, kill your inner fanboy, we don't need to hear it.  I'm enjoying playing an MMO, and it's been a while since I've been able to say that.

its ok so far.  I was hopeing for Lineage3 really, and that was silly of me because Lineage3 is in development already.  dislike having to backtrack a lot for quests, I'd almost rather just sit and grind out mobs.  hope they have an Aion version of Cruma tower coming up soon.

but so far I think its a good game, and it should get me to log in, which after getting my crusader title, I can't really say as much about WoW.

It's good you're enjoying it, but only the first 20levels are WoW++. And sadly a lot of the western players will dismiss the game because of this.

    Ah well, their loss.

That's what they said about Grando Espada. And look what happened there.

In WoW, I was a PvP whore, so I'm really looking forward to the latter levels as well.

You haven't set foot in the Abyss, have you? It's not what they say LoL. It's what myself and a lot of players (not mentioning other Chinese and Koreans as apparently their minds work in a different way for some people) feel about it. The game works, end of.

You just confirmed what I said, you're dismissing it as another 'WoW clone' (most retarded term ever).

Once the game goes live in US and EU, we'll see from the subscription numbers. I've been here way too many times and have had these conversations way too many times. Look up my posting history. I've had similar conversations about Lineage 2. Guess what happened there? Same thing that will happen to this game.

Why don't you take your own advice and 'see from the subscription numbers'?

This game is nothing like lineage 2, the art direction is basically the only thing. I don't think it will get half the subs WoW has, but it's going to be popular enough IMO.

Im having a ton of fun in the beta leveling a gladiator.  Im also having a ton of fun not thininking about the glitches or bugs or bad performance i've run into because... there hasn't been any.  Okay there has been 1 bug I noticed from a quest item that cannot be picked up, but besides that its very refreshing playing a game the way it was meant to be played.

was it a barrel of something? wine maybe?  I remember there being 1 barrel that I couldn't open, all the others worked fine.

What I dislike is I'm being forced to play elyos right now.  I want to play them when Aion goes live, and am afraid that being the impatient idiot I am I'll burn out on the early content by leveling 3 chars to 15+ this weekend.  really, Lineage2 had 5 different starting areas, WoW had 6 (now 8) and it really helps those of us who like to test out the different classes.

Yep, definitely one of the main gripes I have. People won't create many alts in this game.

    Heartless,

You seem more pre-occupied with your doom & gloom predictions of AION, and negative opinion of it, that I was curious what game, or games, you actually like, so I clicked on your name to look at prior posts.    After about 7 pages of posts about AION, the following bunch of pages is you doing exactly the same thing with Darkfall.      Wouldn't you rather spend your time on a forum, or actually in a game you enjoy, assuming there is one (I gave up looking after 8 pages of your posts) or do you feel the MMO community needs you to save us from the choices we make?

it has 3.5m subs in china alone since apr16th im not sure on Korean numbers at present at that same time WOW has taken a massive dip over there.

Will it do anything like that over here not a chance could it pull 1m or so yeah I think it can but not till launch and word of mouth spreads that even though it looks like it,   it isnt your typical asian grinder as so many (insert competition MMO here) fanbois would have you believe.

I see nothing wrong in Heartless's post, A game should be able to stand up to criticism on it's own. I think Aion will in the long run but that just my opinion and you know what they say about opinion's

Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...

I can't even imagine what type of person it would take to find themselves lost and without direction in this game. This game is easier than WoW (at least the early content is) and has even more hand holding.

A little harsh there huh? I mean, if you don’t like it, don’t say….if you do like it don’t say. You do seem to have the knowledge of the Aion population when you indicate “waste our time” as if I did not want to know the pro’s and con’s of the game. But hey, you enjoy the game so only talk about whatever it is you want others to say.

In a nutshell, what does it have that WoW doesn't have, and vice-versa?

  • DiSpLiFFDiSpLiFF Member UncommonPosts: 602

I started playing wow when it first came out and 4 years + later i finally called it quits last month, just burnt out and bored of the same package different box. I've played lots and lots of games to substitute wow as i've quit many times before. I'll do a little comparison to other game releases that were supposed to be comparible to wow. I wouldn't go as far to call me a wow fanboy, but its the greatest mmo to come out to date, how smooth it runs isn't even compareable, i could go on and on but the subscriber numbers are just proof its the best all around mmo to date, and probably still will be for a while.

Age of Conan - truly a different game from wow, i played at launch and couldn't take all the bugs, the rediculous lag in massive pvp etc etc. I stayed for the first month and then went back to wow since it was clearly a better game all around. The game screwed itself by releasing unfinished and quickly lost player base. I went back to it about a month ago to give it another go after a year of mia, the bugs are gone the lag is gone, but deep down the combat system is flawed especially pvp concernning the combo system.

Warhammer online- once again bought it at launch was again looking for something different or maybe just a change from wow. You quickly realize this game is just a shitty version of wow, graphics are sub par, pretty much everything is sub par compared to wow and i didn't want to keep playing the game just because of their "revolutionary rvr system..." regardless its still just bg pvp until end game than they give you something "new" at endgame for pvp.

from here i started playing ftp games, which you quickly realize that their not actually ftp if you want to be competitive you have to buy stuff with real money..

Aion - lets just start off by letting everyone know i played lineage 2 when it came out i played addicted untill pretty much launch of wow. The castle sieges were like nothing i'd ever seen before, and is still by far the greatest mass pvp experience i've had in an mmo. Aion seems to play amazing, i guess maybe because its already retail release in asia its not so much as a true beta atm. But its wow+++ and i love it. I'm just hoping the game has a lot more depth end game as far as mass pvp, and not making pvp feel like a pve grind fest. it combines a lot of great features from wow and lineage and other games, which is what its all about. I'm really pumped for this game, i just wished i never heard about it till september when its supposed to release, because i'm really gonna have troubles waiting for it.
