Owns, yes. Smith and Tinker, however, have licensed the electronic game rights from them and is actually doing something with them along with Piranha games. New Mechwarrior game is incoming. S&T is also owned by Jordan Weisman, one of the original creators of the FASA catalogue of games (Shadworun, Battletech, etc.). In the latest interview, Jordan and the head of Piranha have also mentioned they've some conversation about what they want to do with the Shadowrun IP. No solid hints or clues yet.
Well, these *ahem* devs seem to claim they have MS permission to make an mmorpg. Judging by the models and artwork, I dont see it happening anytime soon.

Really? I don't think it would be a SR MMO seeing that they didn't go to S&T (or maybe they did and nothing was said). Considering the IPs MS has in its grasp, I'd be more inclined to think the "other MMO" is a Halo MMO or something. I'll tell you what I really want to play. In 1983 the author Fred Saberhagen released the first book in an outstanding epic series called the Book of the Swords. These swords were created by the gods and each endowed with a special gift or power. The books told the story of each and how they were used by good and evil to lord power over each other. Men traveled continents to search for each of these swords and sometimes held massive battles of one against another. I won't ruin the story for you if you are the reading type but needless to say there is more to the swords than the names imply 8 ) It's a deep and involving story with a plot as far and expansive as any you'll read. An MMO could be set up and have people do more than just fight for levels and for land, they could fight and cheat and steal and do whatever it takes to gain possession of one of these swords. If a swords particular power was misused it could be up to other current sword holders to team up and defeat them. Owning one of these swords would also mark you for death, sounds fun don't it? I really don't want to give away the books because they really are awesome, and the Wiki description doesn't do it justice but farslayer is countered by a few other swords. The fun is figuring out ways to manipulate the swords and use them for or against each other. It's almost like they have personalities in the books. And besides, once you let go of farslayer it's out of your hands so you had best think hard before giving up something so valuable. 8 ) Killing bob may be a waste of a good opportunity to kill a god and take his "insert awesome thingy doodad here". i gotta read these books again I've had them in the shelf for years and years lol

Shadowrun. There's no other IP out there that's screaming "Make me into an MMO" any louder than that. A team could run perfectly in realtime with Hacker (archetype) support, rigger holding down the area and ready to roll with the getaway car, or deal with anybody who shows up to prevent the getaway. I just don't see anything else out there that even comes close, it's almost as though it was envisioned as an MMO before MMOs existed.
Can't figure out why there was an attempt to make it into an FPS...it doesn't lend itself to that well at all, and only serves to give the IP a crappy reputation.
Edit: After reviewing the thread, it seems that Shadowrun is getting the most nods for being made into an MMO. Not surprising...hope it happens.

Huh...well, the key thing I took out of it was the "non-commercial MMO" portion. I read that as they are basically making an "emu SWG" version which leaves the door still wide open for S&T along with Piranha Games (possibly) to get funding and do a..."regular"(?) MMO in the vein of a AAA attempt. Not knocking those guys effrots (or passion), but seeing a "class" system layout on the Characters page just lost my support for the project. As I said, I'm running a SR4 campaign right now and to me it isn't about cookie cutter classes. It's about the player creating a concept of character they want to play and choosing the skills they think to bring that concept to life.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
I would like to see NOTHING. MMO market is oversaturated and mostly by the same crap with a slightly different theme. Personally, I'd be happy with not seeing a new MMO crop up every two days, and for companies to actually put some thought and depth into their games for once.
I agree with you entirely on companies rushing crap to market, but I also think that we shouldn't be making "properties" into MMOs. Something like a movie or a book really isn't condusive to making it a living, breathing, growing world. For one, obviously, none of the people in the book or movie can ever be player-characters, which is really the only reason most people want to play in these worlds. In a Star Wars game, everyone wants to make a Luke Skywalker or Han Solo clone. That leads to a boring, one-sided game for one, but it also inherently limits where you can go with the gameworld. Nothing can appreciably change or directly contradict the book or movie so you're stuck in a closed, unchanging, boring world with a bunch of cheap clones running around.
No thanks.
I'd much rather have entirely new, original worlds based on interesting concepts that can change and can grow over time. I don't want inherent limitations placed on the worlds I play in.
Stop making licensed worlds, just make good games.
Amen! Although this thread is for the hypothetical ideas of an IP turned MMO that ppl would like to see
Yes, but my hypothetical is still "none" because I don't think it's really possible to do an IP well in MMO form. Either you have to change the IP, which fans will hate, or you have to stay limited within very narrow confines, which MMO players will hate. Either way, you've got crap on your hands.

The point though, is all these guys needed was Microsoft's approval. Which, if correct, means MS is the controlling factor in regards to SR as far as video gaming.
There was another indy group doing the same type of deal with a SR mmo ( non commercial with MS approval ) a few years back.

Each Sword could be similar to DaoC Relics. You would get a bonus for your realm for relics based on ownership. 1 melee relic 1 power relic per realm Hibernia/Midgard/Albion . If everyone had 1 relic of each type no bonus. If you had two of one type you got a 10% bonus to either dps or magic spells ,, if you had all 3 power relics you got 20%.
They could provide bonuses in similar ways. One gives a bonust to gold drops, resource gathtering, melee dps, magic dps, health, agility,, or any other vital stat/ ingame skill. Something similar to below:

Make no mistake, I'm not Microsoft fan. That said, I could see them doing what they did to an indy group...a real loose indy group at that. I don't see them doing that to Smith & Tinker. For one, Jordan (and peers) created Shadowrun. Second, Jordan spent many years working for Microsoft after they bought the FASA catalogue. He know the target demographic and I can't imagine that he was happy about the direction MGS took with the FPS (which may in part explain his departure shortly thereafter and the creation of S&T and licensing the FASA catalogue back from them). He has already expressed the sentiment that MGS was letting the FASA IPs gather dust in a corner.
But, even if S&T/PG's idea for a Shadowrun game is a deep single player RPG, I'll be happy.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
I'd really like to see a game with Transformers or similar giant robots. Teaming up would allow you to morph into a bigger, badder robot. While teamed, players would have responsibilities for different key areas like targetting, ammunition, propulsion and such. Or maybe even different parts like legs, arms, torso and head. If short of people in a group crafting could be used to create programs or human sized robots to be in charge of remaing areas/parts.
I would have to say a very carefully done MMO on the world of Magic: The Gathering (or an open world RPG ala Oblivion)
The story and world are very awesome if you go from the Urza block on and actually pay attention to the story and disregard that it is a card game. I'm talking a game were you can actually walk around in different areas that exist in the novels and story lines, and encounter planeswalkers and the like.
Or I'd like to see a MMO game that takes place in a very steampunk fictional 1600s - early 1700s. something that lets you play a character the way you want, building land and farming, colonizing, founding towns, or being a soldier and training in an army, raising rank, etc.
A concept like Discovery Channel's The Colony. Use your skills and background to rebuild a post apoc world using limited resources. Adapt and survive. Compete with other colonies, drifers, ect for resources for survival. Defend or expand the colony you live in with other players. Join/disband from colonies or merge into bigger ones. Loot, cheat, or steal if you prefer surviving this way, but other players can post bounties. Part social experiement. A thinking person's MMORPG.
Harry Potter would be class, however given the amount of fans that would play this game; the Abraham Lincoln principle applies: "You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time."
There would be a lot of nerd debate on how to approach it but I'd certainly play it if it was made.
I have rarely thought about a Harry Potter mmo but with the movies coming to a close in a few years I would like something to carry on the world of muggles and wizards other then the sad little side books. IMO she either needs to write up a brand new story in that world or leave it alone for now. Personaly I think they could go all out with this. It could have a leveling type system while your at hogwarts(hell throw in the other schools for depth) and then thrust you out into the wolrd to battle dark wizards(hey lets do pvp too) imo there is more then enough stuff to turn this into a mmo if done right now that I think about it.
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

AMD 4800 2.4ghz-3GB RAM 533mhz-EVGA 9500GT 512mb-320gb HD
Elder Scrolls online.. along the lines of Daggerfall or Morrowind
But I would rather have none of them at all if it means another production of poorly created garbage with gaping holes in content, idea, story, world or theme.
Quittage (spelt wrong I am sure), Being sorted into houses, in school classes (Not just a lol sit here and learn, maybe a sort of offline thing, to slowly improve skills), good/bad wizards, Tournaments, Triwizard, with only 3 people in it!
Lots of great things could be done with this. Just really need someone that wants to put everything JK put into the series, into the game basically.

Just don't do it at all.
Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Microsoft still holds the rights to Shadowrun.
But, I haven't seen the info you have that's making you believe this so feel free to post some links!

The point though, is all these guys needed was Microsoft's approval. Which, if correct, means MS is the controlling factor in regards to SR as far as video gaming.
There was another indy group doing the same type of deal with a SR mmo ( non commercial with MS approval ) a few years back.
As soon as MS seen the interest in it, they "revoked" their approval and made, guess what, the SR FPS that bombed to shit.
The problem with anyone making a SR game is, and will be, Microsoft and their "ideas" of what games to make.
The only way you're ever going to see a "AAA" Shadowrun mmorpg ( or any game for that matter ) is to take MS out of the picture.
OMG! I forgot about The Book of Swords! It would just be hard to figure in how to use the swords in game (without making 8 players uber uber).
- Case: Thermaltake Kandalf Black Chassis
- CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz (OC'd 4.2GHz on Water Cooling)
- Memory: Mushkin 8Gb (4x 2Gb) DDR3 1600Mhz
- HDD: Dual Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM
- GFX: (2) XFX Radeon HD 5870 in CrossFire - New upgrade!

Coinspinner - + gold
Doomgiver - crit bonus
Dragonslicer- + damage against epic mobs
Farslayer - range bonus
Mindsword - minus CC duration
Shieldbreaker - weaponskill bonus
Sightblinder - defense bonus
Soulcutter - magic dps bonus
Stonecutter- melee dps bonus
Townsaver - resource bonus
Wayfinder - Speed bonus
Woundhealer - heal bonus

Deaths Gate Cycle by Weis and Hickman.
4 different worlds, each world is different and cut off from the others. Travel between them would be very difficult and a great feat.
Different feel for each world.
5 main races, some well know others not. Elves Men, Dwarves, Sartan, and Patryns. Each race unique and perfect for mmos.
Dwarves known as Gegs! and goofy-cool!!
Meet Hugh the Hand! <<i would play just for this<<<
Vast labryinth in the center.
Rune Magic, elf magic, mechanics, adventure, mystery and one big friggin dungeon full of bitter Patryns.
"The Earth was destroyed.
Four worlds were created out of the ruin. Worlds for ourselves and the mensch: Air, Fire, Stone, Water.
Four Gates connect each world to the other: Arianus to Pryan to Abarrach to Chelestra.
A house of correction was built for our enemies: the Labyrinth.
The Labyrinth is connected to the other worlds through the Fifth Gate: the Nexus.
The Sixth Gate is the center, permitting entry: the Vortex.
And all was accomplished through the Seventh Gate.
The end was the beginning.
— Weis & Hickman, Into The Labyrinth pg. 9"
I think this would be the coostest ever.
My second choice would be Dan Simmons Hyperion Series but this might be a bit harder to do.

Robotech
I would have to say a very carefully done MMO on the world of Magic: The Gathering (or an open world RPG ala Oblivion)
The story and world are very awesome if you go from the Urza block on and actually pay attention to the story and disregard that it is a card game. I'm talking a game were you can actually walk around in different areas that exist in the novels and story lines, and encounter planeswalkers and the like.
Or I'd like to see a MMO game that takes place in a very steampunk fictional 1600s - early 1700s. something that lets you play a character the way you want, building land and farming, colonizing, founding towns, or being a soldier and training in an army, raising rank, etc.
or all of the above.

Mean People Suck
A concept like Discovery Channel's The Colony. Use your skills and background to rebuild a post apoc world using limited resources. Adapt and survive. Compete with other colonies, drifers, ect for resources for survival. Defend or expand the colony you live in with other players. Join/disband from colonies or merge into bigger ones. Loot, cheat, or steal if you prefer surviving this way, but other players can post bounties. Part social experiement. A thinking person's MMORPG.

Elder Scrolls online.. along the lines of Daggerfall or Morrowind
But I would rather have none of them at all if it means another production of poorly created garbage with gaping holes in content, idea, story, world or theme.
I've read rumos of an Edler scrolls MMO from daoc'rs talking about Matt Friror and his studio Zenimax.
None of this has ever been confirmed but at least that gives you someplace to start looking for more info.
Harry Potter, created by Blizzard.
