Is it a Korean thing? I know Korean women don't have the longest legs in the world, but isn't a little too much? Maybe it's just me and I'm not used to the culture.

Not going to stop me playing the game, but insisting that EVERY female be in high heels through-out the game even via weird claws is just really odd to me. Growing claws like that is similar to normal women growing extra long-freaky-bone to also make it look like high heels.

Having armor that shows enough skin to make the women look more attractive in gaming is one thing (and of course can be compared to this high-heels thing), but do Korean's really find high-heels so in-grained into what makes a good women (whether good-looking, elegant, and its general importance in judging a female)  that they MUST add it like games add unreasonable armor designs? (personally, I am against the whole unrealistic armor styles from women)

And this isn't a joke, I'd honestly like to know why Korean's feel the need to add high-heels to all females in a game, and whether or not this whole 'high heels' thing is spread within the culture.

Because it fits the style of the armor and the style that they are going for.

The way that they make the armor look; you cant picture them in army boots or something else like that.

Also, its just shoes. I honestly dont see how much it bugs you, considering the circumstances of it being shoes. Lol.

This is like saying that a game should show less cleavage!

...oh wait you are.  What's wrong with you?!  lol.

It's not just a Korean thing.  Look at Marvel Comics.  It's a, "if we're going to have women heroine they should look metahuman and it should be illustrated," thing.

In LoTRO and AoC they're not high heels because they're not Devas.  These are demigods...  A little calf pain and an ungodly amount of life to train on balance is nothing.

Army boots? Didn't say anything about that. But I'll agree it matches the style, but 2-inch heels? It would have looked fine if it was less.
Doesn't really bug me, just interested in knowing why they choose to do this... Do Korean women feel insecure about their leg length?

I think it's more about making the women look sexy. It seems that the Korean devs (though many devs as well) like to have the female warriors look sexy. So this is what they do.

It certainly is not about being realistic or anything.

Just think; it could be 6inch heels? or they could be barefoot. Lol. I dont think it has anything to do with their leg length, it goes along with how people imagine them self playing. High heels make people look wayyyyy more interesting and bad ass knowing your in heels, kicking ass.

Of course, I wasn't saying Korean's were the only ones with high-heeled media. I remember seeing it in Guild Wars... ACTUALLY, I remember now, if you took your shoes off in Guild Wars your female would actually come up with this freaky white part because she wore high-heels. Maybe it is a NCsoft thing, I don't know, but this obsession for high-heels must have come from somewhere.

But Aion + Guild Wars, I have never seen other games that demanded the use of high-heels like these two have.

I'm just asking why.... Not complaining, just wondering why and where this thing exists in these two games.

That heel is a deadly weapon.  Could you imagine a reverse crotch kick if you tried to grab her from behind.  Oh man.

Well at least they make armor something to look at. The western games most of the armor is so plane looking. EQ2 prime example of bad looking armor. Vanguard some of the very high end armor looks good but most is very plain. WOW's armor all suxs till you get to your high end ter end armor. Now Lineage 2 that a great looking armor from low lvl to high lvl. In  Aion the armor looks good at low lvl to high lvls.

My character looks hot and she blows things up. She could be on stilts for all I care.

    That's nearly offensive. :)

The high heels in this game are merely the direction that NCSoft chose to go.  Of all of the Koreans that I have known, very few (only one that I can think of) have worn high heels.  From what I have seen with my friends, the female focus on height in Korea is no different than the focus on height from other cultures.  That is to say, if you feel short compared to everyone else then you may feel a little uncomfortable.

Like women in the U.S. a Korean woman may or may not choose to wear high heels as a part of their formal attire.

The only possible exception that I know of would be for guys.  Korean women generally see being tall as an attractive trait, so if you're a short Korean guy then you have yourself an uphill battle.

Ncsoft owns guild wars and it is the graphical style of an Ncsoft game.

Honestly, growing up I saw more high heeled heroines in DC and Marvel cartoons. To be honest I know a girl that can actually do her martial arts forum in high heals without breaking them (she can now). Seriously? High heels? Seriously? Wings? Seriously?

This issues is pre-korean games, pre-mmorpgs, this goes right back to comics, tv shows, movies and up.

High heels have a noticeable effect on posture and walk (there's a reason people wear them).  For video game makers though, this gives them a few options: Have no high heels in the game, have everyone in high heels, double the animation needed count for all female characters in the game.

I'll point out that Aion already has a fair number of animations needed for any move added to the game.  Unlike most western MMOs I've played, the animations were not made for the males and then copied over onto the female model;  They're actually noticeably distinct.  And then the two races also don't move the same way.

  • Rikimaru_XRikimaru_X Member UncommonPosts: 11,718

I agree with Dantes. I think without them there wouldn't be much of a diffrience in walk between a male and female. Also when I walk outside many ladies wear shoes with some heel to it.

Yes high heels are so silly and make no sense. While fighting monsters, flying via wings, a world split in two.... totally realistic.

Only the female elementalists and mesmers wear the high heels in Guild Wars. Monks, Warriors, Assassins, Rangers, Dervishes certainly do not have them.
