Second, I quit swg long before the nge came along. I saw the train wreck swg was on in the first 6 months of the game. Soe didn't break my game 4 years ago, it was broken before I bought it in July of 2003. I was smart enough to see the mismanagment and watch from the sidelines. I'm not upset that the game was ruined, but I am appauled by the lack of ethics shown toward customers. Which you are so desperate to somehow pin fault on the players for.

The only SOE game ive ever played was EQ2 unless you count Champions of Norrath on the PS2. As for turning a blind eye to what i might " perceive " as a wrong doing of a game company you are correct. I do not allow the dealings of a game company to effect me as much as some seem too. Still if you feel the need to proceed with an on going battle that you cannot win then by all means continue. But be aware that the constant flaming of anything sony says much more about you than it does sony.
Thanks for the disclosure Badger. I think you just set a good example for everyone. If you'd acknowledge that being able to call SOE and have them send you a box of free stuff isn't something that happens to the "average player of the game today," or if you'd stop referring to yourself in those terms, that would be another step in the right direction imo.
Well, I suppose if SOE would send T-shirts, pens, stickers, posters etc. to any average player who asks and wants to have a mini fanfest, that would cover things too. Then the way you describe yourself would appear more accurate I think.

Well I'm not in a battle as you put it, but I also would not say that soe is doing well. So if there was a battle I wouldn't say they are winning since they were once the undisputed king of the mmo hill just a few years ago.
Also I don't flame anything sony. I love my ps2. There are plenty of great things some soe devs do. If you think I am mindlessly flaming (as is often your fallback defense), then feel free to point out the error in my points instead of ignoring the discussion to disect the people posting. You know, things that should happen on a discussion forum.

I don't see it woudl affect anything at all,as to why it would be mentioned at all?I for one am fully capable of thinking for myself,no matter what anyone else says ,it will not influence my purchses or my subscriptions.
There is a 50/50 flip tothis anyhow,it is just as possible someone really does endorse something with an honest approach as it is likely they do not.Someone feeding bull ,just for the purpose of getting merchandise? well look no further than games feeding the entire public bull with their scripted movies that have zero bearing on their game.
Every single PR statement of a game tells the players exactly what they want to hear,it is always BS.Every single fanbois of a game claims that game is 100% perfect,they will argue any and every flaw with their game,it is a bunch of BS going on everywhere,so to point out one other area of possible lies,is just sideswiping the real facts.
As far as i am concerned if anyone can get something for giving a game a little hype go for it,like i said it won't mean squat to me anyhow.

Just PM one of the Community Team on the forums and if you have a fan event going on they will send you stuff, that's all I did. You don't need to call them on the phone or be life long friends or anything, I never have and I don't know these people personally.
They send stuff out all the time to provide things like competition prizes for fan sites. This is the second year running I got a box of stuff to give out at the meet up, it's usually just the some of stuff they have left over from Fan Faire or Block Parties that would have just been gathering dust somewhere.
As I said, if you'd like some of it, come along next year.

Well, I think this is once again pushing the limits of credibility. I suggest a test ^_^. All "average players playing the game today" should PM the community team and ask for a box of T-shirts, pens, stickers and an autographed poster of the dev team. (This was the nature of Badger's last goodie basket). Just tell them you and some other players are getting together for drinks and laughs to celebrate SWG.
If all the average players do this, and they all receive the free goods from SOE, just as you did Badger, I'll acknowledge that yes, you are simply the voice of the average player playing the game today, just as you described yourself.
I strongly doubt that SOE will give away that much stuff to any average player asking for it. If they do not, then you are not in fact just an "average player" as you say. You would, in fact, have a privileged relationship with them. If you have such a privileged relationship, and you do online marketting for them (which you do a lot of it seems), you're simply required to identify the nature of the relationship.
The principle is very simple, if you receive perks from a company whose products you are endorsing, you're required to be transparent about this. Really, what's all the fuss? If there's no problem, just stick "SOE sends me free stuff" in your sig. Problem solved. You say you have nothing to hide, so be open with everyone. I think openness on your part is all that's required: win/win.

Really, this isn't just about one poster though. For me it's about a broader issue. The FTC marketting guidelines generally require that people not do two things: 1) misrespresent themselves, and 2) misrepresent the product or service they are endorsing.
In terms of self-misrepresentation, the most common offence is passing yourself off as nothing more than an average consumer. Why is that a problem? Well, the "average" consumer is not supposed to have a biased opinion. They're supposed to be "just like you and me," so to speak. Their opinion is therefore likely to be viewed as credible.
If "the average" consumer recommends this product, I should check it out. What if the average consumer isn't so average however? What if they receive perks or compensation from the company they are promoting? Does this change the value of their endorsement? For many consumers (based on survey research), yes it does.
As a result, people are required by Federal law to identify if they receive any perks from companies they endorse. Are people posting on these boards to promote goods or services? Yes, with great enthusiasm. Are some of them receiving perks from the companies they promote? Apparently. Do any of them misrepresent themselves as the "average gamer?" It would seem so, and this is where a line is crossed imo. All I'm requesting is that people be honest about themselves with the rest of us.
I was saying something good about SOE a little bit ago. I just received an autographed copy of The Matrix today. It says it even comes with 30 days of free play. I can't wait to load this thing up!

My point is simply that Badger describes himself as "the voice of the average SWG player who is enjoying the game today." He did this recently in a public conversation with me, and he has consistently presented himself in this manner.

2) He said he would try and obtain some freebies from SOE
3) He arranged the event in a pub in London, in the same manner that hundreds of thousands of people arrange nights out 7 days a week
4) SOE sent said freebies which were distributed at the SWG players piss up
At this point it's worth noting that SOE have NO European presence, their UK office closed years ago so any social gatherings for players of any SOE game in Europe have to be arranged by the players. Doesn't it make sense for SOE to support and encourage that?

Badger is a fanboi, an extreme case maybe, think Obraik on acid lol... but a harmless fanboi all the same, quite why some people feel so threatened by his presence frankly amazes me, particularly when his overly positive arguments for the game can be so easily countered.
My point is simply that Badger describes himself as "the voice of the average SWG player who is enjoying the game today." He did this recently in a public conversation with me, and he has consistently presented himself in this manner.
Can the average player contact SOE and have them send him (or her) a box of free merchandise to hold their own SWG party? If not, then Badger (and anyone else receiving such perks) should not refer to himself as "the voice of the average player."
This, in my view, is where the misrepresentation of self takes place; and I've asked people to be good enough to correct it.
Well lets look at what he did and some of the facts,
1) He posted on the official forums (followed by a posting here) to see if there was any interest in a piss up for SWG players in London
2) He said he would try and obtain some freebies from SOE
3) He arranged the event in a pub in London, in the same manner that hundreds of thousands of people arrange nights out 7 days a week
4) SOE sent said freebies which were distributed at the SWG players piss up
At this point it's worth noting that SOE have NO European presence, their UK office closed years ago so any social gatherings for players of any SOE game in Europe have to be arranged by the players. Doesn't it make sense for SOE to support and encourage that?

Well, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, though I'm still not sure you're hearing what I'm actually saying. I have nothing against the guy for having an SWG party, or for getting freebies. Both are great. I also liked his bug reports back in the day.

His issue wasn't the fact that they were getting stuff, it's that they were mis-representing who they were or what their affiliations were with said company, which he points out is actually illegal.
Frankly, I think most of us knew Badger wasn't pushing the viral marketing and straight out lying just because he liked the game.

He likes the game, he'd like other people to like the game too... ya know, it is an mmo and while we might not all agree with his love of the state of the current game, he's only doing what many of us did (ie: promote the game) before SOE fucked it up.
No, that's not what I happen to think at all. I simply think that if anyone receives perks from a company whose products they are endorsing, they should be open about those perks and not describe themselves as the "voice of the average SWG player who is enjoying the game today." That's a direct quote from Badger btw, in the same discussion where he says, "I am usually able to get someone on the SoE Community Team to send me a box of goodies over, T-Shirts, stickers, pens etc."
Promote all you want, heck get free stuff from companies while you're at it; AND simply be open and honest with everyone about this, and do not misrepresent yourself as something you are not.
Again, if any average player can contact SOE and get a box of free stuff to share with friends at their own SWG party, I'll stand corrected. I'll happily acknowledge that this is what the average player gets from SOE. I'll admit I was wrong. As I've said, however, I highly doubt that this is the case. If what Badger says is true though, a lot of people stand to benefit from this information. Free t-shirts folks (and pens, stickers etc.), just contact the SOE community team and get the goods for your annual party.
He said when he made the thread organising the "SWG get together" that he was hoping to get some freebies from SOE, not sure how more "open" he can be about it?
And to clarify, If he makes ludicrous claims about the game I'll be the first one to rip him a new one with some well placed arguments to counter his point but honestly, this whole thing is pretty fucking laughable, you've got a desperate attempt here to try and discredit him, which is pathetic when two of the people involved had ongoing subscriptions throughout the NGE, one of them received an all expenses paid trip to Vegas courtesy of SOE and did a complete U-turn and started blowing smoke up their arse.

The funny thing is no one is on a crusade to call out shills from opposing companies who come into forums to derail the competition.
So in the end, what is the forum psyche? Fanbois are paid off by the game they love, but no one seems to suspect haters as being paid off by the competition to the 'hated' game.
So many glass half empty people. Taking hate at face value and taking love with skepticism. Sad state of reality.

I was once accused of working for the competition, but that doesn't make much sense to me as nobody does as much harm as SoE does to themselves. Who would hire someone to sabatage SoE when they seem so capable of doing it to themselves?
