I just wanted to throw this idea out on a whim. So, EQ3 would be very very expensive to make. They have Vanguard, a great game, a great ground work at least, wouldn't make sense to spend money developing a (huge) expansion that could possibly turn Vanguard into EQ3? To go from 0 to 10 takes effort and money, 5 to 10 less effort and money or they could even invest the same money that they would have spent on EQ3 from the ground up and add that to Vanguard and bring "EQ3" up to 15, in this example. They are in an interesting position to create an mmo with unparalelled content and depth, sorta similar to the groundbreaking nature of EQ1.
I can dream.....

If the game engine was solid yes but its not so no. The shader engine needs to be COMPLETELY rewritten. Combat lag is off the hook, raiding lag is nearly unplayable for some and bad for all. Player models need tons of work. Chunk loading is unacceptable and problably uncurable and the orginal development staff is gone.
It would just be to huge a project to rework this game engine and the games name is forever associated with a failed launch which it has never recovered from. No developer would touch it as a complete rework.
I spent years playing this game, there is just to much to fix.
SOE doesn't want anything to do with Vangaurd.
They are already working on eq3. I kinda doubt they will be using VG for anything other then maybe ideas. I suspect they will be making it a more action oriented game following the trends or the current games they are releasing. Probably also be console oriented.
I think the days of good MMOs have passed and what we have to look forward to are thin PvP oriented games and/or easy console type action games.
I think the only good RPG games are going to be single player games...

They most certainly will not use VG for anything like that. They need the lore and appeal of Norrath and its world to make a big splash.
Meh.... the memory leak fixes + the server side lag fixes (inner light, etc.) + Windows 7 + Hardware 3 years old or newer + new models... all that has lead to pretty smooth gameplay now. I still use the Zaraax example... when APW was new, that fight would crash half the raid or more and those that didn't crash were getting 5 fps. Now, crashes are very rare and the fight hums along at 30+ fps for most.
That said, EQ3 seems to be a separate and distinct project for SoE. I'm not sure if it involves the Nexus at all or not.
