I'm too an ex-hardcore WoW player, and I personally Love Aion. It's even better now than it was in the CB's I was in. With all the finished touches... the NO LAG.... it's just too beautiful. The difficulty too is just awesome. I really enjoy how hard it is to kill mobs. Its not like WoW where you pull 50 things at lvl 10 before you die. You have one mob, its hard, 2 dam well difficutlt,, 3 nearly impossible, 4 I have yet to survive. (Of course this is just myself questing, not with my friends)
Overall. To me, awesome.

Honestly I'm surprised to say I dont think it's so great at the moment. Obviously it's extremely early to judge but I think if you dont love it at the beginning or nothing really hooks you in, there is not much chance you'll ever really like it later on.
I'm only level 15 but the main aspect of the game (combat) has kinda let me down. I find it pretty slow and repetative compared to both new and old MMO's. The first day I loved the game but very quickly I'm enjoying it less and less. All other MMO's I have played I have loved and played heaps for at least 3 to 4 weeks apart from the free to play ones. Actually in my opinion this game play more similar to the F2P games. It feels more like Sworde of the New World and 'Requiem: Bloodymare'. I dont know, I just get that kind of feeling when playing AION.
This is very off topic but I also recently tried out Champions Online and find that a much faster and simply more enjoyable title. The combat is quick and you can take on numerous enemies at once. I prefer this rather than taking on 1 or 2 and having to be cautious about aggroing a 3rd.
Also my biggest problem and I know it's the VERY early days so this is expected but the community is god awful. The chat is always full of rubbish and nonsense. It makes me cringe every time I see it as soon as I start up the game. I then remember that a whole bunch of WOW players have no doubt come over to try something new. I have never played WOW so cant comment on that but the AION community is the worst I have ever experienced. Kinda makes me want to stop playing MMO's. Communities in City of Heroes, Champions, Everquest 2, EVE, Lord of the rings online were all fantastic. At least for me anyway. Guess I'm just having some bad luck with AION.
I was very psyched about this game from the first beta to about the 4th one. Then I just got bored of the themepark type leveling just like most of the other games out there. I had the collector's edition ordered but decided to cancel it. I didn't even play the open beta.
I am glad I didn't purchase this game now though after reading what is happening with long ques and such (though I remember WoW being like that also when it first opened, and all the times the servers crashed that we even got free game time). So no launch is perfect. I will still keep track of this game but I am still waiting on the perfect sandbox type game where everytime I start a new character it is something new, not the same boring quests over and over.

I eventually had to shut down the general channels myself. This is not something uncommon for me, with the exception of LOTRO. I'll keep the local channels open though, they'll be needed for early enemy warning.

Yeah its all the retarded WoW fanboi's who want to say the game sucks but won't log out and go back to playing WoW, the game is sooo horrible to them that they want to continue playing and bitch. Go figure.

I have only made it up to level 10 and I believe I have a decent understanding of my character so far. I chose a scout and just switched to Ranger.
The newbie area is a level 1-9 (enough to get to 10) area that is nicely laid out in terms of progression. It does send you back and forth from time to time, but the starter area is small enough not to care, but big enough that most of the quests seem segregated every 2 levels.
The UI and engine itself reminds me of Lineage 2. It's more of what would Lineage 2 would be if it was released today. Maybe this is a stepping stone for NCSoft to test out new features in their engine before L3 is released. The kills, paperdoll, inventory are pretty much identical to L2. Some people like it, some hate it.
The combat mechanics and character movement remind me of DAoC meets WoW. You have some abilities that can be used at any time, some that are position based, some that are reactionary (ex: Parry, Block, Dodge) and also a few others that chain off the previous use of other abilities. I actually like the system a lot. It encourages players to play their class to the fullest ability rather than just simple button mashing. As a scout, if I crit using the backstab, it would do A LOT of damage to my target. I also had a skill that increased my dodge (or evade.. i forget), that would allow me to trigger a reactionary style after I dodged which would stun my target (sometimes) for 2 seconds. Enough time for me to run behind them and use the backstab if I didn't get the jump on them.
The quest system reminds me of something that lands inbetween Lineage 2 and Warhammer Online. It still uses the L2 style and feel, but it seporates the storyline arc and individual quests in seporate tabs, has the question tracker system that most MMOs use today and also has the ability to click a locate button if you need a marker placed on your map.
What I did like is that some of the quests, you MUST READ before you attempt them. Why? Because one quest I did requires the player to go to the location only at nightfall. So, I had to wait around and do other quests while I waited for it to get dark. I also had another quest that mentioned that the NPC I was supposed to meet would be in location A during the day and he travels to location B for the night. This was a very nice addition. It reminds me more of an old school RPG where NPCs aren't always in a static location. Of course, most of them still are, but it was nice to see the change.
I don't expect to see too much new between levels 10-19. However, since I am still level 10 - who knows. I may be surprised. I am now in a new area with plenty to do, but my current goal is to get an understanding of my new ranger abilities and get to level 20. Which for me, is when the real game begins to open up.
Honest opinion. Ok, best most polished mmorpg out now

I didn't play yet but if AION has good PVP system then it is worthy to play with. Would like to hear more about PVP than PVE contents.
