That's kind of like saying, Hey, I was just born. Any suggestions on what I should be when I grow up? There's only about a billion right answers to that question
I treated my first character as an experiement. Learning the ropes and making mistakes along the way. At some point you'll know when it's time to create a new character that you can more carefully guild along a path to where ever YOU decide to go. Good luck!
The only loose advice I can offer is decide if you want to craft. If yes, only pick one combat avenue (Melee, Rifle or Pistol). If you don't want to, then pick two (or 3 if you're froggy).
As for faction, you have a while (level 18+) before you can even pick that, and the missions you run in Sector 1 give you background on them (if you take the time to read them) so that you can make your own informed choice.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
Valid point. It was a poorly thought out question.
I have to admit this is the first game I have played that I was not in beta for. To be honest, I had not even heard of this til yesterday morning. Even the guys at gamestop had not mentioned it.
Either way, account activated, starting tonight. I will just pick what looks fun and work it out on the way.
I presume there is a way to respec in case you totally screw up your character?
Part of the fun can be just letting the game unfold in front of you. You'll find what you like and what you don't. I pretty sure any decision you make today in two weeks you'll be doing something and being someone you never thought of or didn't think you'd like. Beauty of a classless skill based system.
on the crafting point. Is it really a choice to craft or not. To be honest, I almost always leave that to others and pay for their services in other games. But I was under the impression that crafting was not really an option, it was a requirement to play.

If it isn't a console game, or not Halo or other FPS...or made by bethesda, the guys at gamestop usually don't know anything about it. They don't have a grasp on the PC gaming world anymore, which is why I stop buying from them.
No, there is no respec. There aren't plans to have sweeping respecs either. There was mention of special event limited form respecs. Those will most probably come with expansions and/or rare special events. Luckily there is a character planner out there and a fan site full of information to make educated choices. www.globaltechatlas.info.

I won't agree with anyone who says it's a requirement. It certainly does make things easier, but I guess that depends on a person's personality. You can just as easily, now, sell all the stuff you collect for chips and then buy what you need/want on the auction hall. Crafting may work out to be cheaper in some cases, sure, but if you don't want to be bothered with it, you don't have to.
Oh, and there are some missions that require certain levels in a tradeskill, but again, you can probably find the items on the AH or on an npc vendor (sometimes).
