I got an email several days ago that I had 5 days free to play in Middle Earth. I haven’t played one month when the game was released, but thought why not. So I downloaded the client and launched the game. To my surprised before I even made it 2 steps I was asked to join a Kinship. But anyway after joining the Kinship I started playing the game. I looked around, got quest then completed them fairly easily. Then I started messing with buttons and while running. Since my departure from Middle Earth there have been a lot of updates to the game, as par for most MMOs. But I felt kind of lost in the whole scheme of things.

So I thought I would drop you guys a some questions.

Is there a website out there that most of you guys use for your information?

What makes Lord of the Rings Online special to you?

I did a quest to kill a named spider. The quest was good. But surprised it wasn’t instanced. Are most dungeons or areas, open?

I only have the original boxed version of the game. With the new expansions are there any new classes or races? Is it worth getting?

I ran over a hill to a quest and saw a fox, I came closer to him and he ran away. Then going to the same quest, I saw some bears, one growled at me. So I went into the other direction, he didn’t chase or follow. I didn’t know if these two instances were just a fluke or by design. Were they? Are there any other smart animals or monsters in the game that surprised you? In EQ2 and other games they would have just charged.

So far my experience has been good. I still feel kind of lost however. So would like to get educated before the free 5 days are over.

Thanks Guys!

I played lotro for 3 weeks before and decided to return also and here is my experience so far and some will answer your questions. 1st time I never read any quests but just hit accept and went to lotrodb website to find how to complite the quests and that was wrong and killed the fun now I read everything and so far I'm 13 didn't had to use the web for help at all.

Foxes are not aggressive nor give you exp they run cause they are afraid, low level bear, boar usually give you a warning if you don't run they will eventualy aggro.

Moria x-pac gives you Warden(spartan looking class shield/spear) and rune keeper which is a combine of mage/priest kinda.

In my opinion this game has the best quests and best gameworld I've seen so far in mmorpg, only thing I recommend is take it slow and do all quests cause that makes the game fun. If you like to rush to level cap this is not your kind of game.

I have actually been using the Lorebook right from the LotRO site.  There are currently many great player-created guides as well as the regular item/quest information articles.
What makes Lord of the Rings Online special to you?
For me, it is the story.  There are other games out there where I also like the story and think a good job is done telling it through quests (Guild Wars, for example), but there is something about being able to follow the path of Lord of the Rings.  Many "Wow!" moments along the way.
I did a quest to kill a named spider. The quest was good. But surprised it wasn’t instanced. Are most dungeons or areas, open?
There are not as many actual instanced dungeons as you might find in other games, but the major ones that are around tend to be very large and contain many quests.  (Some smaller instances are even revisited later on to tell a continuation of a story.)

There are also many open areas that have elite mobs for quests.  These will often have named mobs that are either quest-related, or just there to sneak up and ruin your plans. ;)
Not sure that answered the question, but basically, there are some of both.
I only have the original boxed version of the game. With the new expansions are there any new classes or races? Is it worth getting?
The Mines of Moria expansion introduced the Rune-keeper and the Warden as classes.  You don't necessarily need to play either, but if you are going to stay with the game, I think the expansion is worth the purchase.  And, obviously, you will need the expansion to get to the 50-60 level Moria/Lothlorien content.
I ran over a hill to a quest and saw a fox, I came closer to him and he ran away. Then going to the same quest, I saw some bears, one growled at me. Many of the "critters" in the game will react like the fox did, running away from you as you approach or start fighting nearby.

Some of the creatures, like the bear you encountered, will warn you before they attack.  If you get out of their aggro range in time, you can avoid the attack.  There should be a notification in your chat area, but I forget what type of message it is considered, so you may have it filtered out.
So far my experience has been good. I still feel kind of lost however. So would like to get educated before the free 5 days are over.
Feel free to ask questions on the new player forums on the LotRO site as well.  There are many vets who will be happy to help out.
    Thanks Guys!

Brandywine is always mobbed, and people say Nimrodel too.

wh0astar ha you are posting in all the forums for games I play :P

LoTRo, EQ2 and Vanguard.  Although at the moment I'm playing EQ2 mostly and LoTRo as my second game.  Trying to get to the LoTRo end game.

Hehe. Im having a blast with EQ2 and LOTRO as well.  Especially after finding out what POS of a game AION is. /sigh

The EQ2 dev team has really outdone themselves again with the Night of the Death event. Really fun! Especially the new Hedge Maze instance.

LOTRO has always been a great game. Always played it off and on, just like EQ2.

These are just 2 games you keep coming back to after each time you find out what POS the new MMO's are.

    Cheers

I recently tried returning.  With so many changes to the game, I found it hard to play my established characters and had to roll new little adventurers.

I become extremely attached to my characters and the thought of having to level up another felt overwhelming and helped contribute to my ‘un-fun’ feelings.

I hope your experience is better.

Just remember that it is the journey that counts, not necessarily the destination. Enjoy the ride, don't feel pressured to level fast in order to reach the "end game". Turbine did a good job at making the journey to the end an especially deep and vast one.
