I voted yes, BTW. I really would like to see how the game world would turn out.

It would have to be one hell of a game...

The whole concept sounds like something contrived with the sole purpose of luring people to pay for more than one account at a time.

Of course..........that's the main requirement of any RPG.

You have to invest in your character and take the consequences of the choices you make.

All the latest MMORPGs focus on re-rolling to enhance the re-playability factor, while for me you should enjoy the world and the character you created, without the need to reroll or create an alt.

The character and the player should be the same in a MMORPG, I believe in creating a character reputation in the game which match the player personality.

With the Alt system, you can behave like an ass, and the day after login with an Alt, this creates the shit communities we find nowadays in the MMORPGs.

If you have only 1 character, you behave yourself if you do not want to be excluded by the group activities............and by the communty.

I voted yes, and would actually prefer it. Eve-online is a one character kind of game. You can create several but only one character is able to learn at any time, and that way only one can advance. I like this because it feels a bit more real, and doesn't make for so many people running around with multpile personalities.

I do admit though for one character to work the game has to have a way to always keep the player entertained otherwise when they reach the top with nothing new to do they will get bored and leave.

Uhm... where's the difference of being able to train multiple characters the way it is in EvE, or training up multiple characters by doing something with them? o.O

It still is only one character you can train up, as Earthrise has basically the same skill-system like EvE, just without the passive part of training the skills, but training them actvely instead.

    ---

I voted NO, as I want to play different characters in a game from while to while.

As long as its not a class based game, sure I'd play a single character.  Its pretty much what I do in EVE, but of course, I have 3 accounts so there is an easy way around it if I wanted to play as an arse on one of my characters.

i wouldnt mind it, i certainly see the good points of it, as some have said about really building a rep with just the 1 character and not rerolling constantly and stuff. Myself, im a toon whore, im constantly rolling alts to try stuff out with, usually running 2-3 "mains" at a time on a game that i get really into. Example, i was into WAR for a pretty long time until it just completely died out, and at one point i counted up my different toons across a few servers on both order and destro side, was up to 43 toons, and thats not counting toons i had previously deleted in order to make space for new alts.

In order for a single toon system to work, there would definitely need to be some flexibility with your class, maybe more of a job system like in FFXI, or at the very least some sort of dual classing system like in RoM. I tend to like playing different roles at different times, maybe 1 day i feel like dpsing, 1 day i feel like running a healer. Would have to prevent us from being permanently locked into only being able to play 1 role the entire time. Perhaps even a system more liek in Ryzom would work well too, there arent really any predefined classes, you pick up a weapon, or spell/skill, and get good at it by using it. This would allow you to either focus on becoming the best in 1 role of your choosing, or if youve got the time to invest, you can collect enough skills and enhance them enough to be able to play multiple roles fairly well, even if not being top end in 1 specific thing you can be very well balanced.

It would be highly dependant on the game and its mechanics, but my perfect game would be 1 world, 1 character and preferably no way of having 2 subs to the same address. But the game needs to support it (like the game in my head , which also has a form of perma death, damn I would have about 5 ppl subbing to my game)

    So I voted Yes

As others have stated, I would play depending on the type of game. I prefer a game that lets me play 1 character and continually advance that character. Having to reroll alts in order to enjoy the game is not fun IMO.

This is one of the reasons I quit playing darkfall.  I will never play a MMO again where I can only have one character per account.

My first experience in an mmo was SWG which at launch and for quite a while after only allowed one character per account per server so while you could make alts they could not play on the same server as your "main" I would bounce to other servers and wish they would allow atleast 2 avatars per server but understood their anticipation of the set up of the GCW was the reason to avoid this.  From there I think every game I played allowed multiple toons per server which is my preference but it is just my play style I'm much more partial to early and mid game content then end game raiding so while I certainly prefer the ability to have multiple toons it certainly isn't a deal breaker.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

I believe it is imperative to have a game with FFA full loot pvp have only one character per account.  MMO's are about community, and if you are an asshat then there are consequences.  No one will want to deal with you if you get a bad name for yourself.  Sure it doesn't stop a person from buying a second account...and it ends up helping the company.

Not bad reasoning. If people want to be an asshat it will cost them more money to go anon tthrough a second acount.

I like it. However asshats are very dedicated and I'm sure some are willing to pay extra to greif people.

I would play a game where I can only have one toon per server, like old SWG.  I wouldn't play a game that didn't let me make alts on different servers.

Why? What was so bad about having only one Character per account?

I also agree with you guys.. It is time for asshats to start taking responsibility for their actions. Although some will get multiple accounts I doubt the majority would spend the extra money on two accounts.

another way to fix that and still have alts would be to make it so every character you make has the same last name. like grenada espada did, all your alts belonged to the same family so all had the same last name.

but for me i voted no, i like playing different classes/playstyles. sometimes i feel like playing a healer type but i wouldn't want to play nothing but a healer all the time.

Hmmm... What if you could play any class you wanted with a single. The way you want to play is depended on what kind of setup you have. For example, lets say you want to play as a healer but you are currently wearing heavy armor which allows you to use skills that give you defensive buffs and taunts and stuff that tanks would use. So in order to change into a healer you put on lighter gear that unlocks skills that give you healing capabilities. However the skills that you had when wearing heavy armor are now locked (you can't activate them again unless you wear the gear you were wearing before).

I think in a case like this there is no real need for an alt at all. If this does not make sense please say so and I will try describing it in an other way.

If the system allows it, yes. If the system is as dumb as in 99% of current MMO's where you can only level one class on one character, no. But this is just silly anyway.

If they let me be whatever I want at any time on single character, I'll definitely play that one character for all my playtime (like I did play in my first and only MMO, for 6 years. No alts were ever needed).

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Well, you are defiantly not like the masses that like playing different type of roles whenever they get tired of playing one. You are defiantly more dedicated to one role than the mases.

However what if you find out that for a certain type of situation requires different type of skills set. Sort of a hybrid between to roles. I think it would be nice to have the option to change your roles or skills depending on what kind of situation you are in. I know I hate it when I am playing a healer and really a tank or a assassin or a ranged role would be better. So, in order for me to get that I have to log out, change  character, log back in. But now I am no longer improving my main character that I want to be improving.

I'd play it if it wasn't exactly competitive but more of something fun... I'm not exactly sure how to explain. Semi-sandbox i guess.

I would play with only one character slot if the skill system was set up like MxO's. You bought the skills and put points gained from levelling in a tree, but could hit a phone-booth at any time and reset your skills and put them into anything else you had bought. If you were kung-fu and wanted something a little different, put em in Aikido. If you wanted something completely different, put them in guns or hacker (caster). If your group needed heals, put em in whatever the healing tree was.

I liked this system because it encouraged because expirimentation and you never had to replay the game (the levelling bit at least) just to play a different role. A similair system would be necessary for me in a game with only one character slot. Even if I was in love with the class/role I picked, I'd be locked out of a large portion of the game. I could roll something else on another server but why play a healer on a different server if my friends were on my mains' server?

I would like to put all my effort into one character.  It would be important that the system was set up to advance one tree of skill in the beginning, but once you max that area you could go work on something other skill, rather than going and creating an alt.  Just give us a big enough bank to store all the items that go along with this type of system.

I wouldnt mind at all, I normally do play only one character. I put all my effort into learning the best way to play that character's class and continually improve that one character. Gives you a real edge knowing your character so well when it comes to PvP, also in a group you know your role a lot better. Just from my experience, people that focus more on one character tend to be better at playing than someone with a maxed out character and several alts.

While it makes sense in a game without skill limitation to stick with one character, I don't like the choice being made for me.

Unless there is a really compelling reason why a player having more than one character would give an unfair advantage, I think that would be considered a "negative" in my book when considering a game.

So no, I wouldn't play the game unless it turned out be the one game that rules them all.

I voted yes of course.  I believe this was one of the best things about SWG at launch.  Many people have mentioned that you develop a reputation within the community and have to be responsible for your actions.  It is important to note this does require a skill based game that allows you to re-select your skills over time so you are constantly re-inventing yourself and able to experience other skills (classes) as time goes on.
