What is it about a mmo forum that brings out the worst in people?

Seriously? For a genre that is ruled by 30+ year old men, the majority of the people on forums act like little girls.  Drooling over people's mistakes and waiting to pounce like wolves.  I don't understand what the "kick" in it is for people to verbally assault others for having an opinion?  Is it because people can hide behind the internet and there screen.  I sure know most of those people wouldn't talk like they do to someone face to face.  Just pretty sad..

You can all argue about which mmo mechanic is best, and why your right and everyone else is wrong and stupid.  I"ll continue to try to have an intelligent conversation...

If you think mmo forums are bad you should go visit topix and look at some political ones.

But in general people don't like it when other people think or do differently then they would.

    Just kidding BTW.

Ya, for some reason it's easy to get caught up in all this stuff mainly because people are ignorant of other games.

There are a TON of people, a lot of them pretty big MMO fans, who have never tried WoW for example, yet continue to bash it  continuously.

I myself no longer play WoW, but it doesn't suck and it's not a crap game that's just for 'kids'. There are lots of challenging aspects to the game which provides more content than any one person can experience.

Yet, for some reason, this infuriates people on these boards.

It IS possible to enjoy more than one MMO at once.

One may be different but not better than another.

I don't think it has so much to do with competition as it does with the fact that many MMOers are socially inept or awkward shut-ins who know little about how life works and that in the real world you are responsible for your actions and the things you say.

They go through work and/or school without so much as making a peep to people who pick on them or disagree with them, only to come home, hop on these boards and troll others to vent their frustrations and stroke their own egos so that they don't feel as inadequate as they normally would.

With the popularity of WoW, the people they mostly despise are also playing MMOs and when they play WoW, it infuriates them to the point to where they lash out.

MMOs are on the cusp of mainstream, and with the new WoW movie coming soon, (directed by none other than Evil Dead's Sam Raimi), it will become even more popular.

I, for one, welcome all types of people and go by the old adage of 'the more the merrier'.

With the addition of WoW there is and will continue to be growing pains.

It used to be wall-to-wall geeks, and now there are a few jocks, emos, gearheads, etc in the mix.

WoW is the Breakfast Club of MMOs and is the sole cause of the animosity.

Just my opinion of course. : /

When people are bored and bitter they tend not to be very nice to other people.

So why are all these 30-something year old men bored and bitter?  Too many lawyers and not enough guns and money?

Who are you to talk when:

    1. ...you make an incorrect assumption that the genre is ruled by 30+ year old men

    2. ...you insult the female gender by being sexist when you compare the negative on the forums to being a little girl

Internet always brings out the worst aspect of people.

But the OP is right, there are a bit too many people who can't be wrong here even if proven so, and their favorite game is a lot better than all other MMOs even if most of them are rather similar. There are differences of course but MMOs is a lot closer to eachother than most other genres so the idea that one game is awesome and the rest sucks seems a bit far fetch to me.

A few MMOs are very different like UO and I can understand if someone like something a lot better that are like that but Wow, Aion, EQ1 & 2, AoC, LOTRO and the rest are rather similar.

It seems that on the internet, people tend to act the way they do not dare to act in real life. Sounds like me actually... I'm rather quiet in real life, but I can talk a lot on the internet, especially on forums such as these. And I have a feeling that some people forget that there are living, breathing people behind these avatars, and tend only to look at a person's avatar and see them as... well... just something.

OMFG, you mis-spelled "their" you noob, what the hell is wrong with you. Your entire opinion is invalid on that alone.

    Just kidding.

You nailed it, people are faceless entities who feel empowered by their lack of a face and you are correct, they would never say to people's faces what they say here. (well, at least not to my face anyways)

A couple things come to in mind:

People get bitter and angry about a game and this is a place to vent.

People just want to cause trouble.

What exactly are you implying by this statement? Are you saying we wear little pink dresses, plait our hair with ribbons, skip everywhere, and have imaginary tea parties with our stuffed animals and dollies!? That is so unfair! We don't do anything like that at all!!

Meh. Welcome to the scourge of the Internet age. Social interaction without any real fear of consequence. Honestly I have to ask just what other kind of behavior you expect from a group of people (mmorpg players) who are mainly obsessive compulsives with stunted social skills ... and tourettes.

I think I may have given you this advice in the past. The only thing you can do is be responsible for your own actions and grow some thicker skin.

Honestly I think it has more to do with the way these games impact the players.  I'm pretty much the same on here as I am in real life, and I think it comes through on my posts as I'm very rarely mean or rude, and when I am its very toned down.  Just the general use, tone, and humor of the MMO crowd is something different then you expect in every day life..... fanboys, haters, trolls, the word fail and stark overuse of it.... they invoke feelings in others that understand them in a different way then the general public.  I think thats a big cause of why alot of the gamers on these forums act the way they do.
