Giving it a try!

Well after cancelling Champions Online and Fallen Earth this month, I've decided to give Age of Conan a try. I know it's not the best MMO  out there,  but so far I'm enjoying it.

I downloaded the 7 day trial  from Fileplanet  then after 2 days went to upgrade subscription and what do I see 75%  off the game price so for $4.95  I get the full game  and 30 days of free time,  not  too freaking bad. Thats less then a combo meal  at Carl's  Jr.!

for that price  why not give it a go might even get to like it.

  • finaticdfinaticd Member Posts: 843

It is that price because the game doesn't have many players and most people wont buy it because it is not a solid MMO, it has been 5 dollars for over 6 months so it isn't a sale, it was actually been bargain bin after four months.

I hope you enjoy the game but the quality of the PvE falls after you get out of the starting zone Tortage.

Funcom has reviewed all of its assets relevant for
impairment testing. This process has led to
recognition of an impairment loss of around
3,1 MUSD for Age of Conan due to a decrease in
numbers of subscribers for the game. Funcom Q4 10 report.

Hope you enjoy the game. There has been so many changes to it lately that it would be great if you took some time and wrote down some impressions after some gametime. For me it was the only game that suited my playstyle and didnt contain the elfs/dwarfs/wings/asiangrindng. Been thinking of returning and will probably do so after christmas.

I can find most games for $5. AoC is just the same, there has been period spots where it goes back to usual 19.95.  I guess some people can't just take the fact that some others are going to give the game a try even if it is more appealing at $5. You going to lecture everyone from "masses viewpoint" again and not you're own because you only have 5 weeks time overall with the game? nice! Since you played over 800 new quests have been added, hows that for PVE? You would be better off telling people you're own experience and when it was in letting people know where they stand more so. (For all you know, (and everyday it looks like you don't) things have changed somewhat.)

your starting area the first 20 lvls are the best that AOC has to offer, after that it is inconsistent,

Most people who are saying the areas after Tortage arent fun are those who got the game when it came out, played, got out of Tortage and then quit. The game has been completely redone basically since then and I actually enjoy post Tortage more than Tortage itself. Areas like Connarch village as you fight the Vanir are, in my opinion, some of the most immersive zones ever created for an mmo.

Wait till you get to places like Ymirs Pass, Field of the Dead, and Khoshep Province, you will have tons of fun.

And yea check Fanatic's post history before you take anything he says seriously. That account he uses is only to sit on the AoC boards and trash it.

I just figured hell for $4.95  why not giv it a shot there  not much to lose.  I'm  just  looking for something fun to play for awhile, I think those first 30 days will give me enough time to decide if I wish to continue or not.

Everyone has their own opinion on AoC...I really enjoy the game, but then again I am a huge fan of all things Conan anyway.

The game is in a much better state then it was a year ago, and they will be doing more to it when they release the expansion, which I heard is coming Q1 of next year...

The game has hella haters, and it's understandable, but dont listen to them, most of them havent played since launch...but they were dissapointed because of the state of the game at that time, so ya cant really blame'em...

    ...but anyway...its a great game...have fun...if you like it...then stay...if not...then at least you gave it a shot right...

    PLAYING: NOTHING!!!
PLAYED:FFXI, LotRO, AoC, WAR, DDO, Megaten, Wurm, Rohan, Mabinogi, RoM

    WAITING FOR: Dust 514

I'm only up to level 13, but still having fun and enjoying  it. You know every MMO  has haters, hell there is even people who hate everything SOE  puts out. I don't pay much attention to them  and I will keep playing as long as I'm having fun!

Excellent..............Can you show me where I can find Aion, GuildWars, Eve, Darkfall, CoD, LotRO, WoW, ModernWarfare, or any other decent game for $5. I just can't seem to find popular games I want to play for that kind of price. The only $5 or  less games I can find are from developers that are desperate for $ and the games are usually  buggy, boring, and the servers are practically empty. If you are compairing AoC to the sea of ftp games out there, then I agree, I can also find "most" games for $5.

I downloaded it yesterday and subbed again. Having a good time with it so far. Granted I am only level 18 atm and still in tortage, but its the only MMO in the past 4-5 months that I actually wanted to log into.

I stayed up late playing the game and am looking foreward to logging back in today when me and my wife finish christmas shopping.

That alone makes it worth resubbing for me.

I will see how the game fleshes out soon enuff I suppose. So far so good.

I was a closed beta tester, bought the game at release and played my free month out then quit. I resubbed for a month awhile back and didnt have the time then to give the game an honest chance. Now I do so I will offer an opinion later as I see more of what the game has to offer.

Oh and as for the empty servers statement. Not that there were just tons of lowbies but in tortage there were quite a few people my own level range and chat was very active. Rolled on Wiccana.

Conversation was just in our genre, didn't realise needed to be specific and that would fall under the general gaming forums. Both AoC and EvE for $5 on D2D not long ago. Darfall didn't even have a box to sell until the other day. Lotro has been seen for $5 before but fluctuates to $9.99 too. WoW checked ebay lately? Guildwars you local gamestop? Aion is a new game. Warhammer has been $1 before and $5 more recently on steam. I guess you are not much of a bargain hunter. Are you comparing AoC to all those games I just mentioned about being buggy? Google and some choice words brings up a lot of results.

The point the OP was trying to make was that the game was on Sale and for this price there really is not much to loose to try something new out. If you quibble of $5/$10 then you (not you in person) shouldn't be really looking at mmorpg's.

I just did the same thing and get AoC for 5 bucks... After playing for about a week now, the thing that honestly puzzled me the most:

This game was originally hyped as being 'a dark, gritty, mature title'... I might've spent too many hours in emergency rooms, but where on earth is this title mature and gritty? - Any third class psycho-horror movie punches you harder than this game. All you see is blood and some decapitations. Aside from this, female breasts if someone chooses to undress his female avatar, and... well, nothing...

This game got a 'mature' title for blood and a pair of breasts? Da fu**!? Not that I'm desperately in need of adult action, but compared to the original Howard works this looks like hello-nanny-online? In conan novels there are executions, rapings, 'interactive' prostitutes, torture, _actual_ injustice, _actual_ sex... This title even pales against 'The witcher' with its super softcore trading card girls and occasional naked nymphs, at least the nymphs WERE naked in the Witcher... oh no wait, that was censored in the us-american version. Oh the irony...

It's a lot of the dialogue and environments that give the game a gritty and mature themed feel. It's so classic for some people to only glance over and notice the superficial, like breasts (sigh) and blood. Exactly what did you expect to see and do? Rape and torture other players? If it's things like that, then I guess we have a different view on whats "mature".

It is preferable not to travel with a dead man.

I played the game a lot on trials when they were freely available in spring/summer. Then got 1 month sub but I still spent 90% of my time in Tortage PVPing.

Not that content after Tortage is bad or anything it is just me. I can't stand xping and leveling. I do have 80 lvl experience though...

I have to say it's one of the best made MMO I have ever played. A lot of effort and resources was put into the game and it is damn noticable.

Have you read one of the older Conan novels? - It exaggerates the 'regular' concept of society to a more tribal, instinct-based model.

Age of Conan drags an MMO a little into the 'reality check' direction. Granted, it is a little more like the real world than any other major MMO (which is a joke because MMOs always draw rosy hello kitty worlds [besides EvE that kicks you in the nuts if you suck]); But the original Conan takes reality and drags it into the 'gritty brutal instinctive' corner. Conan is not 'a little violent' with a grain of sexism. Conan is about slavery, torture, rape, domination, humiliation. In a Conan novel there are no real heroes, whereas in AoC you get the first three heroes right off the bat. The bar girl, the metalsmith and the gate guard.

If you want to get an image of reality you need to pour acid on a little girls arm so her parents sell her to you, imprison her as a slave and offer her in a catalogue for some eastern oligarch. Because that is what happens in reality every day, anywhere in the world. And this game tells me some corrupt begger and a hooker are dark and gritty? Way to make me laugh, Funcom. Seriously looks like a parody of reality... Just drop the attempt completely then...

I bought Lord of the Rings Online for $6 at BIG LOTS over six months ago; I still have not loaded it.  The graphics just looked like WoW to me.  I am saving it for when curiousity gets the better of me; it is still a good game.  I already play WoW with a friend every now and then to help him out on quests and such.  I ended up playing Aion during the Beta and the first thirty days.  After that I reactivated my Age of Conan account that I suspended for the Aion Beta Test.  I realized that the other games were not living up to the quality of Age of Conan.  Why play other games if I kept comparing them to AoC?  Upon returning I realized that AoC was MUCH BETTER than it was before I took my hiatus.  Because of my new experiences, I decided to apply for the Correspondent slot for AoC.  I think FunCom has a winner here, and it is only a matter of time before other players see it too.

I have also been watching the lists of Best of 2009 and Most Anticipated for 2010. It is a shame that AoC did not place on either list.  This does not mean it is bad.  It means that Word of Mouth can cripple a game, even if it is not true.  Of course, I anticipate reviews will change once Update 1.06 hits LIVE; it is already on TestLive and receiving good reviews on the Age of Conan Forums.  Rise of the Godslayer is due out First Half of 2010.  Between Star Wars and Star Trek, we will see some Big League competition for our gaming dollar.  I hope that RoTG is impressive enough to stand on its own in spite of quality competition.  Lots of games will lose membership when these are released.  I suspect SOE's SWG and Aion will be the hardest hit with previous sci-fi players (SWG and TR) playing those games.  Conan may get a bloody nose, but I think it will weather the storm after RoTG is released.

I went back for the Veterans Program this last time and I can honestly say that I am having a blast.  I've resubbed on a multimonth plan and apparently so did a ton of other people because the servers are packed. The community is eager to help whether you're a grizzled old vet or a complete noob. The game still has more then a few bugs but they're getting knocked out at a steady pace it would seem. Funcom is adding content at a seady enough pace now to seemingly  keep up with demand and the next big patch will a lot more. The classes are being reworked to be more balanced and fun to play. It's easy now to get groups to run well pretty much anything ,quests or raids at any level. All in all it would seem that AoC is having some kind of rebirth and couldnt be happier. This is all from my observations on the server i play on being Set, I have no idea what the others are like but I've heard similar things about many of them. I hope you enjoy the game as much as I do and a lot of other people are rediscovering.

Funcom had to "tone it down" so it could be released to US and a few other international markets.  It was originally set up with full nudity in Beta, but gray thongs were added to preserve audiences.  Blood and gore qualify as mature. Casual brutality qualifies as mature.  There is a lot of dialogue in the game that is of mature nature.  Slavery is a mature concept.  Brothels, whores, and Courtesans are a mature concept, despite the lack of full nudity and sexual acts.  Both Age of Conan and Dragon Age: Origins utilize the fade-out/fade-in concept to demonstrate sexual activity; nothing is shown.  We as gamers have been de-sensitized to the point that we see this as normal.  This is why we have Ratings Boards.  They have criteria and they rate the games, not the publishers.  This is why some Betas are listed as NOT RATED YET.  The evaluation comes down from another entity.

I have seen the same thing on Cimmeria server.  The guild that I play with has nearly 800 active members; if there is no activity in the previous 30 days, they get dropped.  When traveling, you have to watch your back again.  There are several PVPers that prey on the unsuspecting, since this is a PvP server.  Get yourself in a good guild or run frequently with a group of friends so you can strengthen up and farm good armor from good dungeons.  Many folks are still willing to help out if someone is looking for a quest group.

I have been told the same on Wiccana.  Folks are thrilled with the community on Wiccana.

I have several avatars on Set.  I agree its population has increased in the last several months.  It stays pretty busy.

Funcom had to tone it down on especially the nudity as here in America we are still quite against any form of sex or nudity within a video game. Its perfectly ok for me to stand on someones chest while I drive a sword through their abdomen while they scream in pain and blood flows everywhere, but show female tiddly bits and the next thing you know theres a Fox news exclusive about how games are ruining our youth.

Ive had this conversation with my girlfriend actually several times (shes going for her phd in neuroscience) and she can argue the case that childhood and teenage brain development cant process nudity and sex as well as they can process violence, this is about where she spouts out medical terms and regions of the brain and I stop understanding.

How much of this has to do with not wanting to wind up on a new special or corrupt young minds is beyond me, but Funcom is a business so they need to do what it takes in order to appear in as many markets as possible.

well, it's mature, meaning 18+... I don't know about us-american or any other law, but in Germany you can buy and watch whatever is legal at the age of 18.

While I hardly doubt harsh violence to be any less damaging to kids' brains than sexuality (with the latter being a necessity of human social behaviour and the former being one possible solution to conflict among many many others) we don't have to discuss the matter because the game is still 'adult's only'

Plus. You, well or at least I in Germany, can buy any kind of perverted porn in the next sex shop round the corner, go to any topless or sex or swinger bar around the block, join parking lot orgies or god knows what else is on the loose right off my doorstep. Heck there are armies of people going to nude beaches, taking their children there, every day...

They had to tone down the minor nudity on AoC? I don't think so. It's much more than that, they just didn't capture Conan because they were not willing to take the whole concept to the conan-level. It's not so much about visual sex, it's about visual 'everything'... Nobody in this game is actually, by plot or visuals, _really_ suffering. While the original Conan is _all_ about suffering and how strength can overcome this suffering.

    M

EDIT: Directly compared to LotRO btw, where the lore is perfectly in tune with the idealistic kind of storytelling Turbine is presenting. That's how you actually honor an IP atmosphere-wise.

EDIT2: And I am still pointing to the witcher, capturing the pretty 'mild' Witcher atmosphere of Andrzej Sapkowski's anti-hero perfectly while presenting a grittier look and feel than AoC.

If it's things like that, then I guess we have a different view on whats "mature".

Nicely put. Sadly, considering the replies, it is like explaining to child how it will be one day when it grows up...

Devalidating other peoples' opinions with a misunderstood, vague, "it's all between the lines, you're just too thick to get it" attitude doesn't grant you any advantages. I think I said that it's not about my expectations or any particular nude-sex-violence content, but about capturing Conan the Barbarian as a piece of pulp-art.

I _love_ LotRO and it's about the most harmless game around, don't drag me into the "kid with deep-seated emotional problems" corner!
