Games without keyboard movement

cyandkcyandk Member UncommonPosts: 142

Why do we see so many games without wasd/esdf movement and only click2move? Is it because the developers are lazy? Is it because its easier having click2move? Is it cheaper just having mouse movement? Is it considered a feature not being able to move using your keyboard? (lol)

WHY?!?!

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.

WASD movement is a little harder and uses a bit more bandwidth.    But not so much so that there would be a reason NOT to implement it in a new game.

Unless you have a really old game, there is no reason not to have WASD unless you choose not to implement it.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

A Tale In the Desert is the single 3D western-made MMORPG that springs to mind as not having WASD.  The vast majority of MMORPGs I see have WASD actually.

The MMORPGs which lack WASD (or have poorly-implemented WASD, like Atlantica and Aion) tend to come from eastern developers.  I'd assume this is a combination of Lineage's influence and a lack of FPS influence in that market, more than anything.

Honestly the technical "uses more bandwidth" constraint is insignificant (especially when you consider that click-to-move puts a greater demand on pathfinding for the game; because now pathfinding algorithms are under intense player scrutiny, whereas if it's just mobs pathfinding poorly players don't mind as much.)  So I'd doubt technical reasons factor strongly into the decision.

I guess I could also see an argument that 4 hotkeys is a lot to add just for movement purposes (when you can perform the majority of the same functions by clicking to move) and so to keep things simple the developers didn't adopt it.  Not an argument I'd agree with (I strongly prefer WASD) but one which at least makes a little sense.

It makes sense to use it for games with more of an overhead cam like Diablo.  But few MMORPGs are designed with that perspective.
